PCU Calculation

The document summarizes a traffic survey conducted in October 2016 that counted the number and types of vehicles passing through a location. It then calculates the passenger car units (PCU) based on factors from IRC 106-1990 to estimate the overall traffic load. The PCU is projected to increase by 5% annually through 2034, resulting in a projected PCU of 14519 by that year. This projection is below the capacity of 1500 PCU/hour for the two lane road based on IRC 106-1990 standards.

Traffic survey and computation of PCU

As per the traffic census conducted during October 2016,

 Total Vehicle Unit = 3538

 Auto rickshaw = 1318 (46%)
 Four wheelers and above = 2220

For determining the TVU, following factors are applied to the vehicle units,

 Auto rickshaw = 0.5

 Four wheelers and above = 1

Accordingly, the total vehicle units at LC = (2220 x 1) + (1318 x 0.5)

= 2879 (details attached in annexure 1)

From the above traffic census conducted for determining the TVU, PCUs (Passenger Car
Units) are computed as per Table 1, IRC 106 – 1990 (Guidelines for capacity of
Urban/Suburban roads in plain areas). The details are given below:-

In addition to the TVU traffic census, no of two wheelers (Motorcycles/Scooters) passing

through the LC is assessed as 1000 units/day.

V = total vehicle units = 3538 + 1000 = 4538 units

As per Table 2, IRC 106 – 1990, the capacity of two lane two way arterial roads is 1500 PCU
/hour. From the above table, projected PCU in 2034 is 1209/hour (neglecting night traffic).
