Design of Raft Foundation

The document describes the design of a raft foundation. It divides the raft into strips and calculates the maximum bending moment for each strip based on soil pressure and column spacing. The maximum bending moment of 485.42 kNm/m occurs for strip A-A. The depth of the raft is determined as 1000mm based on shear capacity calculations for corner and edge columns. Main reinforcement of 16mm bars at 150mm c/c is provided in the short direction based on bending moment calculations. Similar reinforcement is provided in the long direction. The total depth of the raft foundation is 1050mm.

DESIGN OF RAFT FOUNDATION

In x direction the raft is divided into different strips i.e.equivalent beams 1-1,2-2,3-3,4-4.
Now for strip 4-4,
Width =3.49
And maximum length between columns (L) = 5.05m
And soil pressure at that column =156.71 KN/m2
Hence maximum bending moment is obtained by using coefficient l/10 and l as center of colum distance
Wl2/10 = 156.71*5.052/10 = 399.64 KNm/m

Now for strip 3-3,

Width =3.65m
And maximum length between columns (L) = 5.05m
156.71+142.66
And soil pressure at that column = =149.68 KN/m2
2
Hence maximum bending moment is obtained by using coefficient l/10 and l as center of colum distance
Wl2/10 = 149.8*5.052/10 = 381.7 KNm/m

Now for strip 2-2,

Width =3.49m
And maximum length between columns (L) = 5.05m
142.66136.33
And soil pressure at that column = =139.4 KN/m2
2
Hence maximum bending moment is obtained by using coefficient l/10 and l as center of colum distance
Wl2/10 = 139.4*5.052/10 = 355.73 KNm/m

Now for strip 1-1,

Width =3.49m
And maximum length between columns (L) = 5.05m
136.33+ 122.29
And soil pressure at that column = =129.31KN/m2
2
Hence maximum bending moment is obtained by using coefficient l/10 and l as center of colum distance
Wl2/10 = 129.31*5.052/10 = 329.77 KNm/m

.
For any strip in y direction,BM= wl2/8
strip A-A, maximum soil pressure developed in this stip.
And maximum length between columns along A-A direction (L) = 4.98.m
And soil pressure at that column =156.71 KN/m2
Hence maximum bending moment is obtained by using coefficient l/8and Las center of column distance
Wl2/8 = 156.71*54.982/10 = 485.42 KNm/m

The depth of raft will be governed by two way shear at the one of the exterior column.
Let us use M30 concrete and Fe500grade steel
Shear strength of concrete τc’= τc =0.25 fck1/2 =1.37 N/mm2
For conrner column L-11 i.e. (label-575)

Fig.Critical section in shear

Perimeter bo= 2*(0.5d+406) = (d + 812) mm

1.5∗900.332∗1000
τv = Vu/(bod) = = 1.37
( d+ 812 )∗d

d=666.65mm

For any edge column .label(573)

i.e. max load = 2099.42KN

bo=(d+406)+(0.5d+406) =(1.5d+812)mm
1.5∗2099.42∗1000
τv = Vu/(bod) = =1.37
(1.5 d +812 )∗d

d= 996.9mm . Adopt d = 1000mm

adopt cover = 50mm (minimum as per code ) then

Adopt effective depth(d)=1000mm
total depth(D) = 1050mm (max from above two calculated value)
Reinforcement in the short direction(main reinforcement due to large BM ) is given by
M = 0.87 fy Ast (d-fy Ast/(fck*b))
500∗A st
485.42*102=0.87*500* Ast (1000 - )
30∗1000
Ast = 1137.47mm2
Ast min= 0.12% of bD
= 1260mm2
Provide 16mmΦ bars @ 150mm c/c in short directions.
(Ast)provided =1340.412mm2 > 1260 mm2 (ok)

Reinforcement in the long direction is given by

M = 0.87 fy Ast (d’-fy Ast/(fck*b))
500∗A st ’
399.64*102=0.87*500* Ast (1000 - ) d =1000-8-8=984mm
30∗1000
Ast = 948.90mm2
Ast min= 0.12% of bD
= 1260mm2
Provide 16mmΦ bars @ 150mm c/c in short directions.
(Ast)provided =1340.412mm2 > 1260 mm2 (ok)

Provide 16mm bar@150c/c at top and bottom in both direction
