QUESTION 2

1.1) Paraphrase the following extract using your own words as far as possible.
Apply all the strategies of paraphrasing.

Distrust
Any signs of distrust in the communication process are barriers to communication. If
either the receiver or the sender doubts the credibility of the other, suspicion will
dominate the communication, and the contents of the message will be discounted. Two
people who are constantly arguing will create a barrier of distrust. The same applies if
there has been a history of broken promises. (Adey A.D & Andrew M.G 1996: Getting it
Right: The Manager’s Guide To Business Communication. Juta & Co, LTD.)

1.2) In no more than 100 words, summarise (in paragraph form) the following
extract in your own words as far as possible.

The importance of listening and what listeners do wrong

People do not listen properly when others are speaking, and there are various reasons
for this. People are impatient with speakers or they will pretend to listen while they are
thinking about something else. People are also easily distracted and focus their
attention on something else rather than paying attention to what the speaker is saying.
They will allow noise of any kind to make them lose their concentration. Some people
can listen while others will only listen to certain parts of the context that is being told to
them, they only focus on the aspects that interest them. This also links to someone
being too lazy to listen or someone who becomes easily bored. People also tend to end
the communication before it is finished, interruption of the speaker occurs.
