High School Physics Circuit Lab

The document provides instructions for using an online circuit simulation called Circuit Construction Kit: DC. It includes questions about building simple circuits and measuring voltage across different components like batteries and light bulbs. Students are asked to predict and measure voltages, observe how circuits are affected by opening/closing switches and adding different materials to break in circuits. They are also encouraged to explore different circuit configurations on their own.

PhET Circuit Simulation

Name: _______________________________________ Date: _____________________

Instructions:

-   You can type the link: https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/circuit-construction-kit-dc

-   OR Google search “Circuit Construction Kit: DC” (click on the first link)

You can place any circuit component into the main window by clicking, holding down the mouse
and dragging the element. Release the mouse once the circuit element is in the main window. To
delete a component, click on the component you wish to delete and click the yellow garbage can.

Questions:

PART 1:

A. Place a battery and a voltmeter in the main simulation window. Place the black terminal of the
voltmeter on the left side of the battery and the red terminal of the voltmeter on the right side of
the battery. What is the voltage of the battery?

B. Define voltage in your own words.

C. Do you think a light bulb has voltage? Predict and then measure the voltage of a light bulb
the same way you measured the voltage across the battery. What was the measured voltage for
the light bulb?
SNC1P: Physics - Electricity

PART 2:

A. Make a circuit that looks similar to this circuit à à à à

B. Is there any current flowing through the circuit when

the switch it open?

C. Close the switch. Place the black terminal of the voltmeter on the left side of the battery (the
negative end of the battery) and the red terminal on the right side of the battery (the positive end
of the battery). What is the voltage across the battery? How does this measurement compare
to the voltage of the battery when it is not in the circuit?

D. What happens to the voltage measurement if you place the black terminal of the voltmeter
on the right side of the battery (positive end) and the red terminal of the voltmeter on the left side
of the battery (negative end)?

E. What is the voltage across the light bulb?

PART 3:

A. Click on the right corner of your circuit until the yellow scissors appear. Click on the scissors
to put a break in your circuit.
SNC1P: Physics - Electricity

B. Try adding various components to your circuit to fill the break you just created. To
do this, scroll down the materials list on the left side of the screen and choose a
component to add to your circuit (one at a time). Close the switch and record your
observations.

Explore the Simulation!

Use this time to explore the simulation. Things you might consider trying:
- What happens if you increase voltage of the battery in your circuit? (click on the battery to do this)
- Try adding a resistor to your circuit. What happens?
- Try building a circuit with multiple batteries. What happens?
