NSW Standard 2 Year 12 - Chapter 1: Rates and ratios - Level 3 Questions and Worked Solutions

Section 1D: Fuel consumption – 3 new level 3 questions

Question 1
A group of students conducted an investigation on the capabilities of different fuel types.

a. A vehicle using unleaded petrol uses 4.62 litres of fuel when travelling at 112km/h for 45 minutes. If each
litre of unleaded petrol costs $1.41, how much does it cost to travel 100km?
b. Another vehicle using diesel uses 6.0636 litres of fuel when travelling at 93km/h for an hour and 20 minutes.
If each litre of diesel costs $1.49, how far must the vehicle travel for the cost of fuel to be the same as your
answer in (a)? Answer correct to the nearest km.

Question 2
For every 95 kg of additional weight, a truck would have to burn an extra 0.35625 L of fuel for every 100 kilometres
travelled. On normal circumstances, an empty truck consumes 149.625 L of fuel for every 285 km travelled. How
much fuel is consumed if the truck has to transport a 500 kg cargo to a docking bay 356.25 km away? Answer correct
to the nearest litre.

Question 3
For every 25 kg of additional weight, a car would have to burn an extra 0.0984375 L of fuel for every 125 km travelled.
A car carrying 5 passengers each with an average weight of 60 kg uses 8.39625 L of fuel to travel 75 km. How much
fuel does a car with 2 passengers with an average weight of 65 kg use to travel 235 km? Answer correct to the nearest
litre.

Section 1D: Fuel consumption – 3 new level 3 questions

Worked solutions
Question 1

a. 112  60 x 45 = 84km
4.62  84 x 100 = 5.5L
5.5 x $1.41  $7.76
b. 93  60 x 80 = 124km
6.0636  124 = 0.0489L/km
0.0489 x $1.49 = $0.072861/km
$7.74  $0.072861/km = 106.22967km  106 km

Question 2
0.35625  95 x 500 = 1.875L extra per 100 km travelled
1.875  100 = 0.01875L/km
149.625  285 = 0.525L/km
(0.525 + 0.01875) x 356.25 = 193.7109375L  194 L

Question 3
0.0984375  25 x (5 x 60) = 1.18125 L extra per 125 km travelled (for 5 passengers)
1.18125  125 = 0.00945L/km
8.39625  75 = 0.11195L/km
0.11195 – 0.00945 = 0.1025L/km (empty car)
0.0984375  25 x (2 x 65) = 0.511875L extra per 125km travelled
0.511875  125 = 0.004095L/km
(0.1025 + 0.004095) x 235 = 25.049825L  25.1 L
