1 A cantilever type retaining wall is to be designed to support an earth fill of height 4m above ground Unit-I
level on the toe side of the wall. The backfill surface is inclined at an angle of 15° with the
horizontal. Assume the depth of foundation is 1.25m below ground level with a safe bearing
capacity of 160kN/m2 and the angle of shearing resistance of 30°. Assume coefficient of friction
between soil and concrete as 0.5. Use M20 concrete, Fe415 steel and unit weight of soil as
16kN/m3.
2 Design a counterfort type retaining wall to support an earth fill of 7.5m above ground level. Unit-I
Foundation depth may be taken as 1.5m below ground level. The safe bearing capacity of soil at
site is 150kN/m2. Unit weight of soil may be taken as 16kN/m 3 and an angle of shearing resistance
of 30°. Assume the value of friction as 0.55. Use M20 grade concrete and Fe415 steel. Sketch the
details of reinforcements in the retaining wall.
3 A flat slab floor with drops is proposed for a ware house 20m by 30m in size. Using a column grid of Unit-II
5m by 5m design an interior panel of the flat slab to support a live load of 7.5kN/m 2. Use M20
concrete and Fe415 and show the reinforcement details.
4 A grid floor of size 16m by 20m is required for the roof of an auditorium. The ribs are spaced at 2m Unit-II
intervals. Live load on roof is 1.5kN/m 2. Adopt M20 grade concrete and Fe145 grade steel. Design
suitable reinforcements in the grid beams and sketch the details of reinforcements.
5 Design a simply supported composite beam with 12m span. The thickness of slab Unit-V
is 125mm. The floor is to carry a load of 40kN/m.

6 A single span deep beam has an overall depth of 4m and an effective span of 6m. The width of the Unit-III
beam is 400mm. The beam supports a uniformly distributed live load of 300kN/m, over the entire
span. Using M20 grade concrete and Fe415 grade, design suitable reinforcements for the beam
and sketch the details.
7 A one-way slab has been designed for a simply supported span of 4.0m with an overall depth of Unit-III
170mm and clear cover of 20mm, using M20 concrete and Fe415 steel. The dead loads are taken
as 5kN/m2 and the live loads as 2.0kN/m 2. The longitudinal bars are designed as 10mm @ 150mm
c/c. Find the probable crack width as per IS 456:2000
8 A coal bunker is to be designed to store 300kN of coal having a unit weight of 8kN/m 3. The bunker Unit-IV
should be square with 3m sides. The stored coal is to be surcharged at an angle of repose which is
30° for coal. Use M20 concrete and Fe415 steel and design the side walls and hopper bottom and
sketch the details of reinforcements.
9 A cylindrical silo having a ratio of height (cylindrical portion) to the diameter of 4, is required to store Unit-IV
2000kN of wheat having a density of 8kN/m 3. The coefficient of friction between grain and concrete
is 0.444 and the ratio of horizontal to vertical pressure is 0.4. Design the reinforcements in the walls
and conical bottom of the silo using Janssen’s theory. Use M20 concrete and Fe415 steel and
sketch the details of reinforcements.
10 Design a simply supported composite beam with 14m span shown in the figure below. Unit-V
The thickness of slab is 125 mm. The floor is to carry a load of 40kN/m.

11 Design a cantilever retaining wall to retain the earth 5m high. The top surface is Unit-I
horizontal behind the wall and subjected to the surcharge of 30kN/m 2. The soil behind the
wall is a well-drained medium dense sand with following properties: Unit weight of
material = 18kN/m3; Angle of internal friction=35°; Safe bearing capacity of soil
=150kN/m2; Coefficient of friction between the concrete and soil = 0.6. Use the material
of M20 concrete and Fe415 steel as reinforcement.
12 Design a counterfort retaining wall to retain the earth 7m high. The top surface is Unit-I
horizontal behind the wall. The soil behind the wall is a well-drained medium dense sand
with following properties: Unit weight of material = 18kN/m3; Angle of internal
friction=35°; Safe bearing capacity of soil =150kN/m 2; Coefficient of friction between the
concrete and soil = 0.6. Use the material of M20 concrete and Fe415 steel as
reinforcement. Assume the spacing of counterforts as 3m c/c.
13 A simply supported reinforced concrete beam of rectangular section 250mm wide by Unit-III
450mm overall depth is used over an effective span of 4m. The beam is reinforced with 3
bars of 20mm diameter of Fe415 grade steel at an effective depth of 400mm. Two hanger
bars of 10mm diameter are provided. The dead load on the beam is 4kN/m and live load is
10kN/m. Use M20 concrete. Find and verify the short term and long term deflections
using the provisions in IS:456-2000 after one year.
14 A simply supported beam of rectangular section spanning over 6m has a width of 300mm Unit-III
and overall depth of 600mm. The beam is reinforced with 4 bars of 25mm diameter on the
tension side at effective depth of 550mm spaced at 50mm centres. The beam is subjected
to a working moment of 160kN-m at the centre of span section. Use Fe415 and M25
concrete and check the serviceability limit state of cracking according to the provisions of
the IS:45-2000.
15 Design a simply supported composite beam with 14m span shown in the figure below. Unit-V
The thickness of slab is 125 mm. The floor is to carry a load of 40kN/m.
16 A beam of rectangular section in a multistory frame is 250mm wide by 500mm deep. The Unit-III
section is subjected to a factored bending moment of 55kN-m and torsional moment of
30kN-m together with an ultimate shear force of 40kN. Using M20 concrete and Fe415
steel design suitable reinforcements in the section assuming an effective cover of 50mm in
the depth and width directions using IS:456-2000 specifications.
17 A Cylindrical Silo having the ratio of height (Cylindrical portion) to the diameter of 5 is Unit-IV
required to store 2500kN of Wheat weighing 8kN/m . The coefficient of friction between

grain and concrete is 0.444 and that between grains is 0.466. Design the reinforcement
in the wall and conical bottom of the Silo. Assume M25 grade concrete and Fe-415 grade
steel.
18 Design a Circular Bunker to store 20 tonnes of Coal. Density of coal is assumed to be Unit-IV
9kN/m3. Angle of repose of coal is 30 degrees. Design the necessary steel assuming the
grade of concrete M20 and steel Fe-415 grade. Sketch the details of reinforcement in the
bunker.
19 A continuous deep beam with an interior span of 9m has an overall depth of 4.5m. The Unit-III
width of support is 0.9m and the width of beam is 400mm. The beam supports a
uniformly distributed live load of 100kN/m. Use M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel.
20 A simply supported deep beam has an overall depth of 4m and an effective span of 6m. Unit-III
The width of the beam is 400mm. The beam supports a udl of 300kN/m. Use M20
concrete and Fe415 steel
21 A Cylindrical Silo having the ratio of height (Cylindrical portion) to the diameter of 5 is Unit-IV

22 Design a Overhead Circular water tank of Capacity 20000litres. Use M30 grade of Unit-IV
concrete and Fe415 Steel. Draw the reinforcement details of wall and the base slab of
water tank.
23 A square slab of 4m side length is simply supported along the edges. The slab is required Unit-II
to support a uniformly distributed load of 4kN/m2. Using the yield line theory, design the
slab using M20 concrete and Fe415 steel.
24 A rectangular reinforced concrete water tank is to be designed for 1 Lakh litres of water. Unit-IV
The inside dimensions of the tank may be assumed as 6m by 5m. The tank rests on
reinforced concrete beams on all the four sides. Design the side walls of the tank adopting
M25 concrete and Fe415 steel.
25 Design a simply supported composite beam with 14m span shown in the figure below. Unit-V
The thickness of slab is 125 mm. The floor is to carry a load of 40kN/m.

diameter of the column is 400m.
28 A rectangular slab 6m x 4.5m is simply supported at the edges. The coefficient of Unit-III
Orthotropy μ =0.7. If the ultimate design load is 16kN/m 2. Design the slab using yield line
theory. Use M20 concrete and Fe415 steel.
29 A circular water tank resting on ground with fixed base is required to store 4 Lakh litres Unit-IV
of water. The depth of storage is to be 5m. Free board = 300mm. Use M30 grade concrete
and Fe415 steel as reinforcement. Design the tank wall and sketch the reinforcement
details.
30 A simply supported reinforced concrete beam of rectangular section 250mm wide and Unit-III
450mm overall depth is used over an effective span of 4m. The beam is reinforced with 3
bars of 20mm of Fe415 grade. The self-weight together with the dead load on the beam is
4kN/m. Service load is 10kN/m. Use M20 concrete. Compute the short and long term
deflections of beam as per IS:456-2000.
31 Design a simply supported composite beam with 14m span shown in the figure below. Unit-V
The thickness of slab is 125 mm. The floor is to carry a load of 40kN/m.
