Globalization: A twisted equation

Globalization according to Webster is “the development of an increasingly integrated


global economy marked especially by free trade, free flow of capital, and the tapping of
cheaper foreign labor markets” This covers the lingual and literal side, yet I guess that the
actual applicable meaning is totally different.

I understand the above term in the way that supports the freedom of passing, trading,
speech…etc. in the light of my understanding I present the below.

I am not a left wing politician, but globalization is best expressed in my opinion in the
Adam Smith’s statement “Laissez faire, laissez passer”. I claim that globalization is just
the broadest application of this principal.

Being with an engineering background, I learned that all equal things can be expressed in
the form of an equation. If we applied this concept to globalization, this means that it
should be a door swinging both ways. That’ is to say that the globalization should work
in the favor of all nations and to cover all fields (political, economical…etc). Now is this
the actual situation?

The answer might be yes within the borders of the first world, across the US and EU in
addition to some other countries that belongs theoretically if not geographically to the
same category such as Australia and Canada. If we took the EU as an example we will
find the globalization terms actually applies there; the freedom of speech, trade, and
passing all over the EU is granted. A perfect simple example of that is he BOSMAN law
allowing all the EU footballers to work and pass among the EU countries without any
constrains.

Now let’s take the spotlight on the rest of the world, is globalization actually working for
other countries; the third world? I guess the answer is definitely NO. Just take a look on
citizens of African and most Asian countries and how the trade balance is always towards
the EU and US except in very rare cases. It is a fact that the huge differences in education
and political practices negatively affect the weaker side, yet this should be one of the
main concerns of the globalization. The current status makes globalization seems as a
mean for the stronger to abuse the weak even more.

Politics and Economics aren’t exactly ethical practice, yet if globalization is meant to
rule, then it needs to be leashed as currently it’s totally unleashed against the weaker side
of the equation making it totally an inequality. This equation needs a new variable to be
balanced. In my own opinion, globalization could be a great door to a better world for
everyone if it is ruled by justice and mutual benefits rule.

From the above it might seem that the grass is only greener on the other side, but actually
after nearly 2 decades of the release of the globalization with the single pole world status
we are living in now, I think that globalization failed to prove its efficiency until now.
