Cyril Takayama:
Born and raised in Los Angeles, California and now based in Tokyo, Japan, Cyril
epitomizes the 21st century entertainer. Fascinated with magic from his youth, he became a
junior member at the illustrious Magic Castle in Hollywood, at the age of 15.
Cyril Takayama had an eventful yet troubled upbringing. A recent profile in Magic "The
Magazine for Magicians"describes him being expelled from school at 15 and then dropping
out of school at the age of 16. Cyril's father, upset at his behavioral problems, sent him to
Japan.
While traveling he got off the plane during a stopover in Tokyo and never got back . Cyril
wound up busking on the streets of Shinjuku, and at times had little money that he could
afford just one meal a day. He attempted to contact Japanese magic circles though they saw
him as an outsider. At the age of 17, Cyril met a rich Japanese businessman,Ito, who saw
his talent and employed him to work in his hotel paying him for each short range
performance 4 to 5 days a week. For two years Cyril performed as a magician for weddings
and parties. Within 2 months Cyril created his own stage magic show. Ito, impressed at
Cyril's progress, sent Cyril to magic assemblies and competitions
Considered one of the early pioneers of street magic and known for his ability to be an
effective story teller, Cyril has appeared in over 16 prime time television specials in Japan
and two television series reaching audiences in over 26 countries. He has traveled
extensively sharing his magic to various places from Brazil to India, to China and
Indonesia, to Italy and Australia, among many other places.
In 2007, Cyril was recognized by his peers in the magic community at the “Academy Awards of
Magic” as “Magician of the Year”, putting him in the company of past winners and icons such as
David Copperfield and Siegfried & Roy.
Later that year, Cyril embarked on a 35 city tour throughout Japan performing his live
shows to sold out audiences. In November 2009, in partnership with Sony Pictures
Entertainment Networks Asia’s AXN channel, Cyril starred in a 3 part television special
“Cyril, Simply Magic”. Following on the ratings success in Asia, Cyril and Fuji TV filmed
his 16th Japanese primetime TV special which aired in Spring 2011.
In 2012, Cyril decided to star in a new TV series that featured a fun and innovative way of
magic story telling. Cyril co-created and served as executive producer of the series along
with Charis Entertainment. Together they partnered once again with Sony-owned AXN
Asia and AXN Mystery Japan.
In May 2014, Cyril premiered his new series “Magiculous Rio”, which was filmed entirely
in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A little bit funny and a little bit ridiculous, Cyril goes local and
tries his best to blend into everyday situations, often looking more hilarious than serious.
Viewers will once again get to see Cyril’s fresh approach to magic storytelling
In July 2014, Japanese TV – CX broadcasted the TV special program “MAGIC New
Century Cyril LIVE”, one of the TV contents (the new idea) was awarded for the Nikkei
BP “Social TV Award 2015 Special Award”. The idea was to broadcast the specific magic
gimmick on the internet while the magic routine aired on TV simultaneously. So TV
viewers can choose to check the behind the magic secret online via PC or Smartphones.
In 2017, dinner shows in Japan has started, it’s been 6 years since the last dinner show in
Japan. Cyril keeps challenging and pushes the envelope to create a new entertainment!

Takayama became interested in magic when he was six years old when he went to a magic
show in Las Vegas where he saw a guest magician levitate a woman and cut himself in half.
The first time Cyril ever performed magic in front of people was during his junior high
school's talent show. At the age of 12, he entered the junior program at the Magic Castle in
Hollywood.
Some of Cyril's signature tricks include the hamburger in the menu trick, having his head
fall off his shoulders, and the card through window trick. His most dramatic trick was
above the Circus Circus hotel, where he bungee jumps into the hotel pool with a sword and
spears the chosen card of his co host from a deck floating in the water. To promote Metal
Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Cyril performed magic with the game itself, surprising
the audience. Because of his large popularity in Japan, Cyril frequently goes out in a
disguise, his most notable one being "Sero jisan" (セロ爺さん) or Old Man Cyril.
Since 2005, Cyril has been steadily increasing in popularity in Japan as well as on the
Internet, due to many of his magic shows being uploaded and viewed on the popular video-
sharing site YouTube. He has been dubbed Magic's first cyber celebrity.
