Descriptive Essay for Students

The woman stood alone on a bridge during a rainstorm between two sides of a divided city. She wore an elegant red dress under a trench coat and stared into the dark, turbulent river with a look of anguish and worry. As the rain poured harder, she hurried across the bridge and as she reached the other side, the storm abruptly ended, leaving the night still once more.

English Descriptive Essay Matthew Schreiber 10V

—————————————————————————————————————
The Woman on the Bridge

The leaves blew across the thin, cold air of autumn. As the sun began to go
into hiding. As it crept down into the horizon it dragged with it the pastel sky. As the
sky, too, inevitably disappeared, darkness replaced it with great haste.

The night was still and the city was asleep.

The leaves stopped moving abruptly and their parents, the trees of Rupert Park,
subdued their lilting. A great cloud approached the city, and with it came a gigantic
roar. The massive aerial pillow of cloud, almost hidden by the darkness of the night,
exploded and relieved itself over the city.
The rain drowned the greenery of the park. A man stood up from a decrepit bench
and bolted across the pavement with a leather sketchbook under his arm.
Beside the park sat an expanse — a deep, muddy crack in the Earth filled with ice
cold water. The river split the two asymmetrical sides of the city. On one side the
shiny glass buildings reached for the sky while on the other side the buildings
crumbled like sand. The only thing connecting them was a bulging bridge suspended
by several snakes of steel. Standing beside the railing, against one of the many
support beams was a woman.

She stood up straight with an umbrella in her left hand. The rain spat onto the
umbrella, threatening to rip through the thin sheet of umbrella fabric protecting her
from its fury. Her flowing red velvet dress swung vigorously around her legs, which
were concealed by thigh high leather boots, and her dress laced across her
shoulders, while pearl white gloves ran down her arms. Masking her exotic garments
was an unbuttoned beige trench coat.
She stared into the invisible, lifeless soul of the river. The dark depths of the river
trembled a thunderously as the surface flinched at the touch of the rain.
She had a look of great anguish and worry on her face. It may have been for the
sorrow the rain had evoked from deep within her heart. Or perhaps it was for what
she had done.
She buttoned up her coat, tightened her grip on her umbrella and dashed across the
bridge. The rain poured more and more furiously and her pace quickened as she
tried her hardest to stay out of it.

She reached the new side of the city, and with her arrival came with the abrupt end
to the storm. The night became as still as death once more.
