A DC-DC Converter Is Used in Regenerative Braking of A DC Series Motor. The Supply

This document discusses two examples of using a DC-DC converter for regenerative braking of a DC motor. The first example is for a series motor, and calculations are shown to determine the average converter voltage, power generated, equivalent load resistance, minimum braking speed, maximum braking speed, and motor speed. The second example is for a separately excited DC motor using rheostatic braking, and similar calculations are provided to determine the average converter voltage, power dissipated in the braking resistor, equivalent load resistance, motor speed, and peak converter voltage.

Tutorial-3

(1) A DC-DC converter is used in regenerative braking of a DC series motor. The supply
voltage is 600 V. The armature resistance is 0.02 Ω and the field resistance is 0.03 Ω.
The back emf constant is 15.27 milivolt/A rad/s. The average armature current is
maintained at 250 A . The armature current is continuous and has no ripple. If the duty
cycle of the converter is 0.6, determine (a) the average voltage across the dc-dc
converter .(b)the power generated to the dc supply (c)the equivalent load resistance of
the motor acting as a generator (d) the minimum permissible braking speed (e) the
maximum permissible braking speed and (f) the motor speed (Ans-240 V,60 kilo
watt,1.01 Ω,31.26 rpm,1532.14 rpm,631.6 rpm)

(2) A DC-DC converter is use in rheostatic braking of a separately excited DC motor. The armature
resistance is 0.05 Ω and the braking resistance is 5 Ω. The back emf constant is 1.527 V/A
rad/s.The average armature current is maintained at 150 A .The armature current is
continuous and has no ripple. The field current is 1.5 A. If the duty cycle of the converter is
0.4, determine (a) the average voltage across the dc-dc converter. (b)the power dissipated in
the braking resistor (c)the equivalent load resistance of the motor acting as a generator (d)
the motor speed and (e) the peak DC-DC Converter voltage. (Ans-450 V,67.5 kwatt,3.05
Ω,1907.4 rpm ,750 V)
