Indirect Evaporative Cooling Guide

The document describes indirect evaporative cooling (IEC), a process that sensibly cools air without adding moisture. IEC works by extracting approximately 30% of room air over a corrosion-resistant counterflow polymer heat exchanger. Water is then atomized across the exit path of the second airstream to absorb heat and evaporate, reducing the temperature before the air passes over a refrigeration coil to reach the desired temperature and humidity level. IEC is estimated to reduce cooling capacities in cities like Bangalore by 20-50% and require around 37 liters of water per ton per hour. The document recommends combining IEC with a normal air conditioning system for reasonable capacity reduction of around 40% and operating cost reduction of around

Notes on Indirect Evaporative Cooling (IEC)

1. IEC is a process by which the air is sensibly cooled without adding moisture content.
2. Approximately 30% of room air is extracted over the Corrosion resistant Counter Flow Polymer
Heat Exchanger.
3. Water is atomized using spray nozzle across the exit path.
4. Through the second stream of Counter Flow Exchanger, the outside air/mixed air is permitted to
travel.
5. Heat from the second stream of air is absorbed by water for its evaporation. thus reducing
temperature.
6. This air is further passed over on a refrigeration coil to reach ADP.
Indicative Load

7. The reduction in capacities in cities like Bangalore could vary between 20-50% from time to
time.

8. Water Quantity requirement will be apprx 37 litres/Tr/hour.

Our recommendations:

We recommend a mixture of this system with the normal airconditioning system to facilitate reasonable
reduction in capacity (say 40%) and enormous reduction in operating cost (say 70%).
