Lecture 16 Gears and Gear Trains (Continued) Dr. Othman Hassan

1) Epicyclic or planetary gear trains have one or more gears whose axes move relative to the frame, with the central gear called the sun gear and surrounding gears called planets. 2) An example planetary gear train is analyzed where gear A is the driver and gears B and D are compound, with the speed and direction of various gears calculated. 3) A second example looks at a planetary gear train with two inputs, analyzing the speed and direction of each input individually and then combining them to determine the total output speed and direction.

Lecture 16; Gears and Gear Trains (Continued)

Dr. Othman Hassan

Epicyclic (Planetary) Gear Trains
 On these gear trains the axis of one or more gears moves relative
to the frame.
 The gear at the center is called the sun and gears whose axes
move are called planets.
Automatic Car Transmission
Example 1
 In the planetary gear train shown, gear A is the driver and
gears B and D are compound. Gears C and E are internal
gears and C is fixed.
Example 1
Member Arm A B C D E

Train Locked,
arm given one +1 +1 +1 +1 +1 +1
positive turn
Arm Fixed, C -
-7/3×- -1× NC/NB
7/3×ND/NE
given one 0 NB/NC = = -1× -1 ωB
=-
negative turn 7/3×3 140/60
7/3×40/120

1-7/3 =
Total Motion 1 8
-4/3
0 -4/3 2/9

VR = Driver /Driven = (8) / (2/9) = 36

Example 2
 In the figure shown suppose input 1 turns at 120 r/min CCW,
input 2 turns at 360 r/min in the CW direction. Determine
the speed and direction of rotation of the output shaft.
Example 2
Member Arm C D E F

Train Locked,
arm given one +1 +1 +1 +1 +1
positive turn
Arm Fixed, C -1 × -
+2 × NE/NF
given one 0 -1 NC/ND =ωD
= 2×36/108
negative turn =48/24

Total Motion +1 0 +3 +3 +5/3

Example 2
 When there is two inputs, the superposition method is to be
used.
 The output speed is the net summation of the output speeds
resulting from the two inputs (ωo (with input 2 held fixed) + ωo (with
input 1 held fixed))
 VR (with input 2 held fixed) = Driver /Driven = (1) / (5/3) = 3/5
So, ωo (ωF, with input 2 held fixed)=ωarm × 5/3 = 120 *5/3 = 200 rpm
CCW
Example 2
𝑁𝐵 ×𝑁𝐷 ×𝑁𝐹
 VR of the ordinary gear train = ωA/ωB = =
𝑁𝐴 ×𝑁𝐶 ×𝑁𝐸
32×24×108
= = 2.4
20×48×36

 ωo (ωF, with input 1 held fixed)= ωA/2.4 = 360/2.4 = 150 r/min CW

 ωo = (ωF, total) = ωF, with input 2 held fixed + ωF, with input 1 held fixed

=+ 200-150 = 50 r/min CCW
