Flood Management and River Engineering (Ce 805) 8

The document discusses various types of river training works used to manage floods and rivers, including guide banks, groynes, levees, bank protection, pitched islands, and bandalling. Bandalling is described as a system that uses a bamboo framework with horizontal ties and struts to confine low water flow within a channel for navigation. The bamboo structures are placed at an angle downstream to direct additional water volume into the desired channel and increase velocity, forming silt ridges and a confined channel between sand banks on either side.

FLOOD MANAGEMENT AND RIVER ENGINEERING (CE 805) 8th sem (for secA &B )

Date: 17/04/20

Types of river training works: The various types of river training works are as follows-

1. Guide bank system

2. Groynes or spur

3. Levees or embankment

4. Bank protection and pitched bank

5. Pitched island

6. Miscellaneous methods

i) River training without embankment

ii) Bandalling

Bandalling: Bandalling is a impervious system of river training. It is designed to confine the

low water flow in a channel with a view to maintain suitable depth for navigation.

A bandal consists of a frame-work of bamboos driven in the river bed and set 0.6m apart
with horizontal ties supported by struts placed at every 1.2m. To this bamboo frame-work
Jhamps are tied with coir rope to the horizontal ties. The bamboos used on the frame- work
are usually 3 m to 6m in length and Jhamps are made of bamboo mats from 0.75m to 1.0m
wide strengthened at the edges by strips of split bamboo. Bandals are placed at an angle of
300 to 400 inclined downstream, to direct an additional volume of water into the inclined
downstream to direct an additional volume of water into the desired channel and to increase
the velocity in it. The bandals donot stop the flow of water but merely provides an
impediment to it. There action leads to the deposition of silt in ridges parallel to and behind
the bandals . Thus a channel confined between bandals is formed with sand banks on either
side.
