CVD is one of the main causes of death and disability in all over the world ***
every 30s, someone dies from heart desease or stroke
why notice? ***
people who have high cholesterol in their body are more likely to have 2-3
times higher risks of heart attack, stroke,
so
what is cholesterol?
lets get into it ***
it is a waxy fat-like substance and the structure of cholesterol: 3 6membered-ring
and 1 5-membered ring with an alkyl chain and hydroxyl group ***
in lecture 5, we knew that cholesterol is the most common steroid that comes
from animal and cholesterol is also the precursor of other hormones such as
progesterone or testosterone. and another derivative of cholesterol is bile acid-
which including cholic and deoxycholic acid ***
Cholesterol is an oil-based substance. it can’t be taken up by the bloodstream. It
needs a carrier. and that is lipoprotein
Two types of lipoprotein carry the parcels of cholesterol:
Low-density lipoprotein (LDL): Cholesterol that travels in this way is
unhealthful or “bad” cholesterol.
High-density lipoprotein (HDL): aka “good” cholesterol. ***
Function
cholesterol seems to have a bad reputation to our health. However,
cholesterol is an essential substance in our body. You can find the
cholesterol in any cells of your body. most in the plasma membrane,
and a small percent in the intracellular organelles. ***
Cholesterol has four primary functions, without which we could not survive.
The first one is
Contributing to the structure of cell membrane
Making up digestive bile acids in the intestine
allowing the body to produce vitamin D
enabling the body to make certain hormones ***
Cause?
In fact, cholesterol production is so important that your liver and intestines make about 80% of
the cholesterol you need to stay healthy. Only about 20% comes from the foods you eat.
so if we intake more by the food we eat. Be careful
because that can cause a lot of problem to your health
***
With high cholesterol, you can develop fatty deposits in your blood vessels. Eventually,
these deposits grow, making it difficult for enough blood to flow through your arteries.
Sometimes, those deposits can break suddenly and form a clot that causes a heart
attack or stroke. ***
The most common cause of high cholesterol is an unhealthy lifestyle. This can include
Unhealthy eating habits, such as eating lots of bad fats. meats, dairy products, and deep-fried and
processed foods. Eating these fats can raise your (bad) cholesterol.
Lack of physical activity, with lots of sitting and little exercise. This lowers your HDL (good)
cholesterol.
Smoking, damages your body’s arteries and blood vessels. This increases your
risk for plaque buildup. It also reduces the amount of high-density lipoproteins
(HDL) — the “good” cholesterol — in your blood
Risk factors for high cholesterol include family history .that means Genetics may also
cause people to have high cholesterol.
Age. Your cholesterol levels tend to rise as you get older. Even though it is less common, younger
people, including children and teens, can also have high
Cholesterol. ***
How can I lower my cholesterol?
You can lower your cholesterol through heart-healthy lifestyle changes. They include a heart-healthy eating
plan, weight management, and regular physical activity.
If the lifestyle changes alone do not lower your cholesterol enough, you may also need to take medicines. If
you take medicines to lower your cholesterol, you still should continue with the lifestyle changes.
