What Is Discrimination?

Discrimination means treating a person unfairly because of who they are or because


they possess certain characteristics. If you have been treated differently from other people only
because of who you are or because you possess certain characteristics, you may have been
discriminated against.

Types of discrimination
 Age discrimination.
 Breastfeeding and pregnancy discrimination.
 Carer's responsibilities discrimination.
 Disability discrimination.
 Homosexual discrimination.
 Infectious diseases discrimination.
 Marital or domestic status discrimination.
 Race discrimination.

Cause and Effect of Discrimination


The effects of discrimination in society are reflecting on race, religion, and
disable discrimination. One of the main reasons cause violence is
race discrimination. ... Once the conflict between different religions break out, which can
easily cause a world war.

Example of Discrimination
Some examples of discrimination include the following: a) Harassment – inappropriate
jokes, insults, name-calling or displays such as a poster or cartoons directed at a person
because of their race, colour, sex or gender, sexual orientation, etc.

If You Are Accused of Discrimination…

Take the Accusation Seriously


If someone complains to you that your actions or comments are unacceptable,
offensive or discriminatory, listen closely. Remember that people with different values
or backgrounds may experience as humiliating, threatening, or insulting what you
intended to be funny or harmless. Remember also that your body language and tone
of voice contributes to the impact of your words and actions.
If you believe the complaint is fair, you may want to apologize for the discomfort or
offence you caused.
Avoid Retaliation
Do not act in ways that could be seen as “getting back” at the complainant. Avoid any
behaviour that could embarrass or intimidate the person you have allegedly harassed.
Review Your Rights and Seek Advice
Contact Equity Services for information and advice. You may wish to seek support
and assistance from your manager, dean , teachers or to anyone that you can talk to.
