Required Tools
All Chrom@ maintenance procedures can be performed using the following tools:
n Tweezers

n Small flat-head screwdriver

n Small Philips screwdriver

n Right-angled dentist style probe

Disassembly Instructions
This document contains step-by-step disassembly instructions for the Chrom@. The instructions are
clarified by images of the part that is being removed or disassembled. Furthermore, the screws that are
removed are shown next to the image of the parts themselves.

When disassembling the system unit, follow these general rules.

n Do not disassemble the system into parts that are smaller than those specified in
the instructions.
n Label all removed connectors. Note where the connector goes and in what
position it was installed.
n Turn off the power and disconnect all power and all options. Also remove any
PC-Cards that are in the PCMCIA slot.

1. Battery
The battery pack should be removed as follows:
a. Slide the latch into the unlock position and hold it.
b. Lift the battery at the side of the latch and take it out of the
bottom base.

2. Modem
To remove the modem follow the steps below:
a. Remove the screw of the modem cap (1x A), see Fig. 1: .
b. Open the modem cap and take it away.
c. Remove the three screws (3xA) holding the modem

d. Lift the modem out of the modem bay.


e. Disconnect the modem cable. The modem is now free.

3. Memory
The memory module(s) should be removed as follows:
a. Remove the memory cap screw (1xA), see Fig. 1: .
b. Open the memory cap (do not slide).
c. Release the SO-DIMM memory module(s).
d. Remove the module(s).

4. Floppy Disk Drive


The floppy disk drive can be taken out of its bay according to the
next steps:
a. Slide the latch into the unlock position and hold it.
b. Slide the floppy disk drive out of its bay.

5. Front Cover and Keyboard
Remove the front cover (that holds the VersaGlide touchpad) and the
keyboard as follows:
a. Remove the two screws (1xA, 1xB) at the underside of the unit.

b. Turn the unit over and open the LCD screen.


c. Lift the front cover on the keyboard side.
d. Lift the keyboard.
e. Disconnect the touchpad cable from the mainboard.
f. The front cover is now free from the base unit.
g. Disconnect the keyboard flat cable from the mainboard.
h. The keyboard is now free from the base unit.

Note During reassembly the connector on the mainboard first


needs to be lifted into its unlock position before connecting the
keyboard flat cable.

6. VersaGlide Touchpad
The touchpad should be assembled according to the following
instructions:
a. Remove the seven screws (7xA) that hold the metal frame.

b. Remove the metal frame.


c. Remove the flat cable from the metal frame.

Note Only remove the flat cable from the metal frame when the
flat cable itself needs to be replaced.

d. Remove the two screws (2xA) that hold the plastic buttons.
e. Take away the plastic buttons.
f. Remove the touchpad printed circuit board (PCB).

7. Hard Disk Drive


The following instructions explain how to remove the HDD and its
bracket and connector:

a. Remove the flat cable from the mainboard.


b. Remove the screw (1xC) that holds the HDD.
c. Lift the HDD out of its bay.

d. Disconnect the flat cable from the hard disk drive.

e. Remove the four screws (4xD) that hold the two brackets.
f. Remove the HDD brackets.

8. Button Panel and Power Switch Board


The button panel and power switch board should be removed
according to the following steps:

a. Apply pressure carefully to unlock the button panel.


b. Take away the button panel.
c. Remove the screw (1xC).

d. Lift the power switch board out of the base unit.

9. Heat Plate
Remove the heat plate as follows:
a. Remove the single screw (1xE) from the heat plate.

b. Loosen the four CPU screws. Note that these screws remain
attached to the heat plate.
c. Remove the heat plate.

10. CPU
Below you can find necessary steps for removing the CPU:

a. Release the socket by turning the single screw.


b. Take out the CPU.

11. LCD Panel


The procedure below describes how to remove the LCD panel from
the base unit:

a. Remove the screw (1xF) holding the grounding cable.
b. Disconnect both LCD signal cables.
c. Unplug both speaker cables.
d. Remove the speaker cables from behind the hook.

e. Slide the hinge covers outwards and off the base unit.

Note Take care to note which side each hinge cover belongs to
as they are not entirely symmetrical.

f. Close the LCD panel and turn the unit upside down.
g. Remove two screws (2xC).

Note Do not open the LCD panel after removing these screws.

h. Turn the unit back up.
i. Remove two screws (2xB)

j. Lift the LCD panel away from the base unit.

12. LCD Panel Disassembly


The LCD panel should be disassembled according to the following
procedure:
a. Remove four of the six bumpers (2xG, 2xH). Note that two of
the bumpers need not be removed.
b. Remove the four screws (2xI, 2xJ).

c. Release the LCD panel bezel from the inside (i.e. the edge along
the LCD screen).

d. The LCD bezel is now free from the panel assembly.
e. Click the speaker covers out of the LCD bezel.

Note This only needs to be done if the covers themselves are


damaged.

f. Remove the screw (1xI) at the top left, then remove the six
screws (6xC).
g. Remove the screw (1xK) holding the clip (L), then remove the
clip.
h. Remove the three screws (3xJ) holding the speakers.

i. Remove the screw (1xJ) from the inverterboard.

j. Lift the board and dis connect the two cables.

k. Lift out the LCD screen, including the brackets.


l. Take the brackets out of the back bezel.

m. Disconnect the LCD cable from the LCD screen.

n. Take the hinges out of the back bezel.


o. Take out the speakers.

Note During reassembly the cables should be guided along the


edge of the back bezel. The speaker with the longer cable is the right-
hand speaker.

p. Unclip the LCD lock latch.


q. Remove the lock and its spring.

13. Top Cover


The following procedure describes how to remove the top cover:

a. Turn the unit upside down.


b. Remove the nine screws (7xC, 2xF)

c. Turn the unit back and remove the four screws (3xC, 1xA).

d. Disconnect the two speaker cables.
e. The top cover is now free.

Note During reassembly the lid switch cable should be worked


away properly.

14. Top Cover Speakers


Remove the bottom base speakers as follows:

a. Remove the six screws (6xK) holding the speakers.


b. Take the clamps (2xM) and the speakers out of the bottom base.

Note During reassembly the cables should be guided along the


edge of the bottom base and around the HDD bay.

15. DVD-ROM Drive
Follow the steps below to remove the DVD-ROM drive, its brackets
and its front cover:
a. Remove the three screws (3xA) and the hex bolt (1xN)
b. Disconnect the flat cable from the mainboard.
c. Lift the DVD-ROM drive out of the bottom base.

d. Push the three clips inward (one left, one right and one at the
bottom).
e. Take away the front cover.
f. Remove the four screws (4xD) that hold the two brackets.
g. The brackets are now free.
h. Disconnect the flat cable assembly from the drive.

16. Volume Board
The steps below describe how to remove the volume board:
a. Disconnect the two speaker cables.
b. Unplug and remove the short flat cable.

Note Take care that during reassembly the connectors of the


short flat cable match those of the base unit.

c. Remove the screw (1xE) holding the volume board.


d. Take away the volume board.

17. Modem Connector, Fan and Lid


Switch
Here you find the correct order in which to take out the modem
connector, the fan and the lid switch:

a. Remove the modem connector.

Note During reassembly the modem cable should be guided into


the mini PCI hole.

b. Remove the modem cap screw (1xP) and then take out the
modem cap.
c. Disconnect the fan power cable.
d. Remove the fan.

Note During reassembly the fan should be inserted with the CE


mark on top and the arrow next to the CE mark pointing outwards.

e. Remove the screw (1xF) holding the lid switch PCB.


f. Disconnect the lid switch cable.
g. Remove the lid switch PCB.

18. USB Port


Below is explained how you should remove the USB port:

a. Remove the plastic USB port cap.


b. Disconnect the cable that runs from the USB PCB to the
mainboard.
c. Remove the screw (1xC) that holds the USB PCB.

d. Remove the grounding plate (1xQ).
e. Lift the PCB out of the bottom reassembly.
f. Remove the screw (1xA) that holds the metal prohibitor.
g. Lift the metal prohibitor from the PCB.

Note Step e and f are valid only for systems that were shipped
outside Japan.

19. Charger board


Next is described how to remove the charger board:
a. Lift the charger board from the mainboard.
b. The charger board is now free.

20. Mainboard
The following procedure explains how to remove the mainboard
from the bottom base reassembly:
a. Remove the two hex bolts (2xR) at the rear.

b. Remove the three hex bolts (3xN)


c. Remove the seven screws (7xC)
d. Remove the metal plate (1xS) near the volume board location.
e. Remove the metal FDD bay cover.
f. Remove the metal holder (1xT) that keeps the power connector
in its place.
g. Lift the mainboard out of the bottom base reassembly. S
h. Remove the metal I/O sub bracket.
i. Remove the cooling block that cools the chipset and the video
chip.

21. I/O Bracket and Bottom Base
Brackets
This procedure should be followed when removing the I/O bracket
and the bottom base brackets:

a. Remove the two screws (2xA) that hold the I/O bracket.
b. Take away the I/O bracket.
c. Remove the two screws (2xA) that hold the bottom base
brackets.
d. Remove the bottom base brackets..

Reassembly Instructions
Reassembly is the reverse of the disassembly process. Use care to ensure that all cables and screws are
returned to their proper positions.
