Part 2: Short answers (3 points each)
Instructions: Read and answer the following questions thoroughly. Each answer has to be at
least 100 words no more than 150 words.
• What was the turning point for World War II that led to the victory of the Allies?
The battle of Stalingrad would be considered as the turning point. Once winter was over
Germany could advance on Russia and they came at a halt at Stalingrad. Stalingrad was fearcelly
defended by Russia. During this time Russia had been building a very powerful air force and
decided that it was time to unleash it. Russia easily pushed Germany back with their superior air
military. Not long after Italy and Germany were forced to leave Africa and a large portion of
Japan's navy had been destroyed by the American navy. Then came the attack of Sicili by the
British and American troops which opened up a new front in the South. They also decided to
attack Germany in France which opened up the a west front. These three fronts overwelmed
Germany and led to the victory of the Allies.
• Explain in detail about the impacts on the home front and civilians during World War II
(e.g. social, political, and economic aspects). Was bombing of the cities an effective
method in the war? How did each country react?
The fact that WWII was a total war heavily affected the homefront since many food
factories would be turned into to factories helping with the countries military which led to
shortages of food. Many women were also affected by the war since they turned from
housewives into workers since many men were sent to fight the war. In WWII bombing cities
were a very common tactic since it was at this time where air force had a rapid development,
and so when cities were bombed often times it would hit civilian homes which would leave the
owner of those homes homeless. Bombing was very affective since countries in WWII could
bomb whatever they wanted, they bombed industrial districts which slowed down production
of goods or military materials. Harbors were bombed to destroy navies and trade ships. Many
countries reacted to this by in turn bombing the opposition's valuable resources which led to
even more bombing.
• Explain in detail about the new order in Europe during World War II. Who were the
Einsatzgruppen and what was their role?
The new order in Europe basically represents the peak of Germany;s conquest. The
Nazi regine spread from All of France to Moscow in Russia. Many workers were taken in to
custody of Germany, some worked for Germany in their own captured country or some were
sent to Germany to work there. One of Nazi Germany's goals were to make the Aryan race
superior to any other race. Nazi Germany's SS secret police then helped create "The Final
Solution" which involved mass murder of Jews and others such as Gypseys. The
Einsatzgruppen was then created to murder these minorities, this may involve sending them to
Death camps or shooting them on sight. They searched houses of civilians hoping to find Jews
specifically, and warned people that any household secretely containing the residents of that
household will be shot with the Jews.
• Explain in detail about the new order in Asia during World War II. How did the local feel
about it and how did they react?
The new order in Asia mainly has to do with Japan inviting different nations to join them
to help them make a great empire. Promising the best for the countries that join, but it turned
out quite the contrary. The Japanese treated the civilians of the countries that joined as slaves.
Many people were forced into labour and their lives ment nothing to the Japanese. They were
forced to work on roads, bridges, railways for the Japanese etc. Even more than that the
Japanese took the resources of the countries who joined to make for themselves, they used
these materials to enrich themselves and used it for their war machines. The locals quickly
realized that joining them was a mistake, but for the most part could do nothing about it since
Japan was such a powerful nation at the time. Some locals decided to rebel and some turned a
blind eye to it and feared for their safety. Japan did not allow the thought of rebelion to roam
free so they executed many who did not agree with their way.
• What happened on D-Day or the invasion of Normandy? Who led the mission? Why was
D-Day significant?
D-Day was the first sign of Germany losing the war. Germany knew that the Allies would
strike, but they didn't know where so they set up troops at places where Germany thought they
would attack, but they were wrong. The allies launched an attack on Normandy, France. This
mission was led by Dwight D. Eisenhower. He planned the mission as he used deception to make
it look like that they were going to attack somewhere else but then attacked Normandy. British,
American and Canadian forces joined together in attacking Normandy, using British and
American naval units to fire shells at Normandy. The Allies then decided to open two fronts on
France and attacked from the south but it showed little resistence. The invasion was so
significant because it was the start of the end of Germany's reign, Germany lost France which
one of the first things that Germany did at the start of the war was take over France, therefore
many though the invasion of Normandy was nearing the end of the reverse of Germany's
accomplishments.
• What happened at the Battle of the Bulge? What was the result?
In the begining of the WWII Germany took France by going through the Ardennes forest
which France thought to be impenetrable. During the end of WWII once the Allies had taken
back France, Germany thought to use the same tactic and go through the Ardennes forest to
attack France. This battle was called the Battle of the Bulge. It was called the Battle of the Bulge
because with this attack Germany made a bulge of progress but was still surrounded by the
Allies forces. So the German bulge deteriated quickly. During the battle they managed to trap
American forces in the middle of the bulge but they the Allies made a line of progress leading to
the trapped American forces and so they were free and advanced on Germany.
• How did World War II end in Europe?
Since the battle of the Bulge failed Germany had been losing hope. Italy had been
invaded already and so Germany didn't have many more allies left. The Allies collapsed down
onto Germany from both sides, Russia from the East front and American and British from the
West front. Along the way the Soviet Union took over many major cities in different countries,
they took over Ukraine, Warsaw in Poland and Berlin in Germany where Adolf Hitler the military
general of Germany ingested cynaide and shot himself and his wife in a German bunker. Before
that Mussolini, Italy's general, was shot as well and was put on public display for Italians to treat
his dead body with disgust.
• How did World War II end in Asia? What was the mean used to end the war, where did it
happen and what were the impacts?
Japan and the Allies fought at a small island known as Okinawa, there many United
States navy ships were destroyed by Kamekaze planes, a plane that was designed to explode
once was driven into something, killing the piolet in command as well, therefore kamekaze
missions were also known as suicide missions, and the pilots would die for their country. Once
the allies won over Okinawa, there was nothing in their way to take over Japan. Although the
power of the Allies combined would be powerful enough to take over Japan, they decided to
use Atomic bombs since America believed that there would be too many casualties if they were
to send their men onto the Japnese main land. The Atomic bombs were dropped by air planes
on Harosima and Nagasaki where many Japanese civilians died due to the bomb. Japan
surrendered which was the intention of USA for using the Atomic bombs in the first place.
• Why did President Truman decide to use the atomic bombs? Do you agree or disagree
on the usage of atomic bombs and why?
He wanted to use Atomic bombs because he believed that if he were to invade Japan
directly their would be too many cassualties. So he wanted to use Atomic bombs to show Japan
how powerful they really are and force them to surrender. Many people think that their soldiers
lives are more valuable than the oppositions soldiers which is fair because it is a war, but was
using Atomic bombs necessary? I don't think so, I believe that the death of Japanese civilians
could have easily been avoided. If USA had warned Japan of using Atomic bombs if they didn't
surrender and they chose to fight on then I believe that using the Atomic bomb would be
justified. But when they don't get a choice in the matter it is more effective but it is also
inhumane. So I believe Japan should have at least been given a chance to surrender before the
Atomic bomb was dropped.
• What were the results of World War II? How did the Cold War happen?
Both Societ Union and United States were part of the Allies, and so Stalin and Roosevelt
met few times. When they met they would make their ideologies clear. They were strong
believers in their ideologies, United states believing in Democracy and Stalin believing in
Commusnist which are polar oppsite ideologies. The cold war started when there was conflict
between the two ideologies. USA beleiving that countries should be free to choose their
ideology, Stalin believing that converting countries to Communism was easily better because it
would feed his power over communist countries. In detail Democracy gave the people the
freedom of speech and gave civilians the power to voice their oppinions. Communism was more
about the government taking control over the lives of civilians where every person were equal.
