Basic laying procedure of floor finish with Metallic floor hardener shall be
done in two parts:
Part –A laying of screed concrete average thickness 38mm.
Part-B Topping of 12mm over screed concrete with Metallic floor
hardener.
Part A - Laying of screed concrete average thickness 38mm: -
All surfaces in areas to receive cement topping shall be broom cleaned,
and be free from loose particles; any grease, paint, oil spot, asphalt or
tar shall be removed; any projections such as nails, bolts or screws shall
be cut off finished with the concrete slabs; and any laitance or scum
shall be removed by the use of stiff bristle brushes.
The concrete floor topping shall be laid in 3x3 m panels by providing
3mm thick and 30-40mm depth glass/PVC/aluminium strips leaving
12mm above the top of screed concrete with 1:3 cement mortar,
alternate panels shall be laid on one day followed by the other group of
alternate panels the next. The edges of the panels shall be supported
either by wooden strips or flat angle iron pieces fixed in position
properly.
Immediately prior to placement of cement topping, the base slab shall
be thoroughly moistened and brush coated with the neat cement grout,
to provide a proper bond for the surface of application.
The cement concrete shall consist of one part Portland cement, 1.5 part
fine aggregates and 3 parts of course aggregate, proportioned by
volume, with the addition of required water per bag of cement.
The course aggregate shall be well graded of 12.5mm down size and
well graded river sand shall be use as a fine aggregate. The fine and
course aggregates shall be free from deleterious loam, vegetable
matters or any ingredients that may affect their bonding properties.
This screed concrete shall be applied in average thickness of 38 mm
after all heavy construction work completed and all the machinery,
equipment units etc. installed. All the undulations of grade slab to be
covered/levelled with this grade to make the surface uniform.

The concrete shall be laid gently in the panels and tamped with wooden
mallets till a cream of mortar covers the surface. Wooden strips or flat
pieces shall be removed before laying the alternate panels.
After screeding the topping to the established grades, the surface shall
be compacted by tamping, then floated with a wooden float or power
floating machine.
After the topping has been partially set, the surface shall be steel
trowelled to a smooth and even finish, free from tool marks. A final
steel trowelling shall be given until the surfaces have set to a hard and
uniform finish.
Part B- Topping of 12mm over screed concrete with Metallic floor
hardener: -
Ironite hard topping finish shall be applied in average 12 mm thick while
the base screed concrete layer in still wet/green condition.
The cement Ironite shall consist of well-mixed dry mixture containing
one part Ironite to four parts cement by weight.
This shall consist of one part of cement- Ironite (CICO surface hardener
or equivalent) mix to two parts of well-graded hard crushed stone
aggregates (6 mm down size) by volume. After mixing these ingredients
homogeneously adequate water shall be added
Water sprinkling shall be done during placing, tamping, finishing.
Curing shall be done by covering with wet sacks for 2 days and then by
ponding 50 mm water for 7 days.
Manufacturer data sheet CICO surface hardener or equivalent shall be
followed as guidelines.
