Solution:
Consider a thin vertical strip width dx , height y . When it is rotated about the x

WASHER METHOD
Example 5: The region bounded by y x3 and y 2 x2 is rotated 360 °about the
x -axis. Find the volume of the solid so formed.
Solution:
y 2 x2 intersects y x3 at (2,8) and (0,0). We wish to find the volume of the
“crescent” shaped region rotated around the x -axis.
Consider a thin vertical strip width dx .
When it is rotated around the x -axis it becomes a “washer”

SHELL METHOD
Example 8: Consider the solid formed when the region R in the last example is rotated about the y
-axis. Find the volume of the solid so formed.
Solution: As explained it is impractical to use a horizontal strip and hence the thin vertical strip, when
rotated 360 °about the y -axis produces a shape known as a shell whose dimensions are
shown in the figure below. The word shell is used in its military, rather than marine, sense.
