This section serves just as an overview of the various engine controls and indications and their location
in the cockpit. Each system is covered in more detail later in this chapter.

Fuel Flow Controls (Speed Select Levers)
A fuel flow control lever (Speed Select Lever SSL) for each engine is fitted in a quadrant on the upper
panel in the cockpit. Each lever with its respective engine starting button recessed in the handle, is
spring-loaded to the right in the quadrant. A 'teleflex' control fitted to the top of the lever transmits
movement to the rod operating the Fuel Control Unit (FCU) of the engine. A ‘trigger' mechanism allows
additional forward movement of the SSL if required for emergency use. Three micro switches are fitted
to each lever.
The quadrant is 'gated' as shown in Figure 12 below and this determines the 5 settings of the SSL
(Notice that gate (E) is notched). Some positions on the quadrant have two names depending on whether
the SSL is being advanced or retarded.

Position A Engine Shut-Off Fuel cocks in FCU are closed.
Position B Auto Start/ Ground Idle In this position starting is achieved simply by pressing
the start button and releasing. A cam restricts FCU fuel
flow and starting fuel is supplied by the start servo
valve.
Position C Fast Reduction/Fast Idle Engine can be retarded to this gate without the risk of
engine flame out.
Position D Flight In this position the FCU controls Ng and the collective
lever is the power control.
Position E Manual Governing Range Emergency Positive range. Progressively opens an
emergency fuel cock in the FCU.
The SSL may be moved to any intermediate position between (C) and (D) to manually reduce fuel flow if
necessary. This is the Emergency Negative range.
Note - When in either emergency positive or negative range the engine parameters (T4, Ng, Torque)
must be monitored more closely as the normal protection systems are over-ridden.
There are 3 micro-switches associated with the SSLs. They perform the following functions.

Micro switch 1 Inhibits warning lights ENG P POWER and DIF NG when SSL is in Gate (A).
Micro switch 2 Ensure Auto start is only possible in Gate (B).
Micro switch 3 Extinguishes the THROT light when both SSLs are in the Flight Gate (D).
If the Auto-Start system fails, starting may be achieved by moving the SSL forward of the Start Gate (B)
and holding the start button in. T4 must be monitored closely. Slight movement of the SSL achieves
control of the T4. When the engine reaches 15,000 Ng the start button must be released.
