QUESTION 1

For the truss shown in Figure 1 below:

Given that the cross sectional area of the diagonal members is 200 mm2 and the cross
sectional area of the vertical member is 150 mm2.

(a) Draw the analytical model showing the degrees of freedom and restraints. (4 marks)
(b) For each of the three truss members determine the following:
(i) The lengths. (3 marks)
(ii) The direction cosines. (6 marks)
(iii) The global stiffness matrices. (9 marks)

(c) The structure stiffness matrix. (3 marks)

Determine the joint displacements, member end forces, and support reactions for the

beam shown in Figure 2 below. (25 marks)

a) Draw the analytical model for the space frame shown in figure 4 below, showing all 24
degrees of freedom and 24 restrained co-ordinates. (24 marks)

b) Write down the formula for determining degrees of freedom for a space frame (1 mark)

Determine the joint displacements for the three dimensional truss shown in figure 5.

For the grid shown in Figure 6, determine

(i) The local stiffness matrices for the two grid members. (8 marks)
