Being brought up in a village close to the economic capital of India, whenever I got a chance to
visit Mumbai I observed a striking contrast in everyday lifestyles of people in this City and my
Village. Later, as I grew up I realized that one of the significant contributors to the contrasting
lifestyles was access to Energy. I believe Energy has become the 4 th basic necessity for man,
empowering us to transform every aspect of life. Ergo, I chose Petroleum Engineering for my
Undergraduate studies which will allow me to achieve my dream of making energy accessible to
everyone in a safe and sustainable manner.
During an Industrial visit to Research Institutes of ONGC Dehradun we learnt how various
problems encountered during Exploration and Production Activities can be addressed using
proper analysis and lab work, which sparked my Interest in research. I first felt the joy of
pursuing a dedicated scientific research, when I joined the Gas Hydrate Lab at IIT Madras where
I got acquainted with problems like hydrate blockage of pipelines in the Oil & Gas Industry. In
order to contribute towards the solution of this problem I had to do extensive Literature search,
which allowed me to learn various attempts & approaches made in this direction. I learnt the
importance of Literature review in building the foundation of a novel research. My mentor
taught me a lifelong learning I will never forget that ‘Bringing something new to the table
requires Multidisciplinary knowledge, and efforts that can create a parallel between different
disciplines’. This not only helped me to come up with new benign compounds(KHIs) which when
added in small concentrations can inhibit the growth of hydrates in pipelines, but also
introduced me to the art of Observation and Creation of analogies. For instance, Ice cream
industry operates at low temperature (suitable for formation of gas hydrates). The smooth and
creamy texture of the Ice-cream comes as a result of Emulsifiers and stabilizers added which
account for Inhibition of cluster formation in Ice cream. After a thorough structural analysis of
such compounds I was able to identify some of them as Anti-agglomerants (a class of
compounds that allow the formation of hydrates but do not let them agglomerate). Currently, I
am running experiments on them in the Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) Lab of my Institute.
During one of my visits to the lab, I was introduced to the core flooding apparatus which
intrigued me. Having learnt about Carbon Capture and Utilization from a poster presentation,
CO2 flooding caught my attention. Provided the limitations of gaseous CO2, we are using CO2
foam (also working on its stabilization using a wide range of surfactants) in order to obtain
improved oil recovery from sandstone reservoirs. Although, one might succeed at enhancing
recovery on a laboratory scale, but at field scale there are ample amount of other problems
associated with extraction of oil, like the production of Formation Sand into the well. I was
fortunate to work at the Sand Control Laboratory of the Institute of Oil and Gas Production
Technology (IOGPT), ONGC Panvel. After a thorough study of various Sand Control Methods I
performed Sieve Analysis of formation sand from three different wells. Particle Size Distribution
Curve was obtained which helped in the selection of Gravel Pack Size. I was also introduced to
the Gravel Pack flooding Apparatus in the Lab followed by Hydraulic Fracturing. With increasing
popularity worldwide, Hydraulic Fracturing has become a revolutionary technique in the
Industry. It was exciting to perform Hydraulic Fracturing Simulations for three different wells,
using FIELD PRO Software and analyse Fracture Profile by varying different parameters. The
skills gained from the Winter Internship were of great help during the Laurie Dake Challenge,
where we analysed Log & Seismic Data of the 6305/5-1 well of the Ormen Lange field (provided
by EAGE) & based on Interpretations, designed an Appraisal Plan for the field.
