Purpose: - : Instruments

This document outlines a procedure to determine the compressive strength of concrete cube samples according to British standards. Concrete mixtures are made with specified proportions and poured into molds. The cubes are cured, then tested in a compression testing machine to determine the maximum load before failure. The compressive strength is calculated based on the failure load and the cube's cross-sectional area. Testing two groups with different water-to-cement ratios found compressive strengths of 11.52 MPa and 10.43 MPa respectively.

Purpose: -

Determine the compressive strength of the cube samples. Instruments:

-
• Apparatus and tools:
a) Compression testing machine.
b) Molds (150*150) mm.
c) Steel rods (25*25) mm with length approximately
equal to 380 mm. Standards:
• BS EN 12390-1:2000 Shape, dimensions and other requirements for
specimens and molds.
• BS EN 12390-2:2000- Making and Curing Specimens for Strength Test.
• BS EN 12390-3:2001 - Compression Strength of Test Specimens.
• BS EN 12390-4:2009 Compression Strength Specification of Test
Machines.
Note: damaged specimens or specimens which are badly honeycombed
should not be tested.

Procedure: -
1. Make a concrete mixture with specified proportions of concrete contents
(cement: sand: gravel: w/c).
2. Fill the molds in three layers and stroke every layer 36 times by steel rod.
3. Remove the excess concrete above the upper edge of the mold using two
steel trowels or floats, brought together with a sawing action and carefully
level the surface.
4. The test specimens shall be marked clearly and indelibly, without
damaging the specimen.
5. Records shall be kept to ensure the traceability of the specimen from
sampling to testing.
6. Leave the test specimens in the mold for at least 15 hours, but not longer
than 3 days.
7. After removal from the mold, cure the test specimens till immediately
before testing, in water at a temperature of 20°∁±2°∁, and a relative
humidity ≥ 95%.
8. Wipe the excess moisture from the surface of the specimen before placing
in the testing machine.
Aggregate Tests 2 nd Stage A

9. Wipe all testing machine bearing surface clean and remove any loose grit
or other extraneous material from the surfaces of the specimen that will
be in contact with the platens.
10.Don’t use packing, other than auxiliary platens or spacing blocks (see EN
12390-4) between the specimen and the platens of the testing machine.
11.Position the cube specimens that the load is applied perpendicularly to the
direction of casting.
12.Centre the specimen with respect to the lower pattern to an accuracy of
±1 % of the designated size of cubic.
13.Select a constant rate of loading within the range 0,2 MPa/s (N/mm^2. s)
to 1,0 MPa/s (N/mm^2. s). Apply the load to the specimen without shock
and increase continuously, at the selected constant rate ±10 %, until no
greater load can be sustained.
14.Record the maximum load indicated.

Results: -
• This experiment depends on British Standard BS EN 12390-3:2001.
• The failure figures for cube shaped mold:

P: maximum failure load of specimen N
A: is the cross-sectional area of the specimen on which the
