MD2 Test 2 12 June 2020 PDF

The document appears to be an exam for a Mechanical Design 2 course, consisting of 5 questions related to gear design and analysis. Question 1 asks to justify the material selection for worm and worm wheel. Question 2 asks to briefly explain the formative number of teeth in helical gears. Question 3 provides specifications for a pair of bevel gears and asks to calculate the dynamic load and determine the minimum hardness to withstand wear load. Question 4 provides specifications for a pair of helical gears and asks to design the gears based on strength. Question 5 provides specifications for a pair of worm gears and asks to determine the normal force and rubbing velocity.

VI SEMESTER B.TECH. (MECHANICAL ENGINEERING)

TEST – 2, June 2020
SUBJECT: MECHANICAL DESIGN 2 (MME 3202)
Max. Marks: 15
Note: 1. Answer ALL the questions
2. Missing data may be suitably be assumed
3. Use of data hand book is permitted

1 Justify the material selection for worm and worm wheel. (2)

2 Briefly explain the formative number of teeth in helical gears (2)

3 A pair of right angle bevel gears transmits 20 kW of power at 780 rpm of

pinion. The velocity ratio is 3.5:1.The module and face width are 6 mm and
60 mm respectively. The teeth are of 14.5⁰ involute profile. The number of
teeth on the pinion is 32.The gears are subjected to light shock with 8 hrs/day
of service. The material for pinion is C40 steel and material for gear is
untreated forged steel.
(i). Calculate the dynamic load (3)

(ii). Determine the minimum necessary hardness to withstand wear load. (2)

4 A pair of helical gears of equal diameter having 20⁰ full depth involute profile (3)
are required to transmit 37.5 kW with moderate shocks (8-10 hrs. per day
service) at 1200 rpm. The two shafts are parallel and 0.45 m apart. Each gear
is made up of C45 steel untreated. Helix angle = 30⁰. Take the face width as
15 times the normal module and Cw=1.15. Design the gears based on strength.

5 A pair of worm gears is designated as 2/32/10/8. The tangential load (3)

transmitted is 12000 N. The pitch line velocity of worm gear is 1.5 m/s.
Determine the normal force and rubbing velocity.
