ABSTRACT

This research was conceptualized to provide solutions regarding the

senior high school students who had difficulties reaching the considered

“Very Satisfactory” rating in English at Bicol Merchant Marine College

Incorporated. With the aid of 35 respondents from the institution itself, the

researchers were able to perform their study.

The data gathered revealed that majority were able to reach the

considered “Very Satisfactory” rating in English but almost half of our

respondents failed. The researchers were able to uncover why some of the

students failed to reach our rating basis. Irresponsibility, lack of interest,

escaping class, and etc. The study also revealed that the teachers are not to

be blamed in this issue for the respondents positively stand for their

instructors. They rated the way their teacher teaches them, and as the results

implied, there is nothing wrong with the way the students are being taught.

Not only that, the respondents who happen to reached our rating basis shared

their experiences as to how they have achieved that rating.

With the results gathered, the researchers were able to formulate

recommendations as to how this issue be resolved. Recommendations for the

students and also for the teachers and the institutions itself. The researchers

also provided recommendation for future researchers who’ll be continuing

this study.

The outcome of this study aims to benefit not only the students but

also the teachers and the institution itself.

CHAPTER I
The Problem and it’s Setting

Introduction

English can be used as a medium of communication in any part of the globe.

English can conjugate not only people but countries as well. English can give you an

edge to what you want to achieve in the future in a way that it is one of the keystones that

you need to improve before you hit what you are aiming for. English is considered as

everyone’s Lingua Franca. English can get you anywhere you want. But still, behind of

all these blindsiding benefits of English, students managed to set it aside and treat it like

it is not important at all.

In this study, we are going to determine how many of the Senior High School

Students of Bicol Merchant Marine College Inc. (BMMCI) end up acquiring grade that is

below the so called “Very Satisfactory Rating (85% - 89%)” in English. You might

wonder why it is a big deal to have a grade that is below 85% especially in English.

According to the April 19, 2018, DM 076, s. 2018, the qualified grade for a student to be

accredited is reduced from 75% to 60%. We all know that having 75% as a rating is

already low enough for us to be considered as not good in a certain subject and it is

normally the lowest grade a student can acquire. In fact, it is nearly impossible for

students in BMMCI to acquire a rating as low as 75% since there is a protocol demanding

teachers to do their best for the students not to end up failing the subject. Therefore, for

this research to be more high-end, we decided to allot the considered “Very Satisfactory

Rating” as our boundary to consider a student as an accredited scholar of English.

DepEd Order No. 8 S. 2015

8|Page
This research also focuses on providing answers to the questions that’ll help you

realize why some students fail to achieved our allotted boundary of grades. We’ll

determine what could be the possible factors that affects the student’s studies and

construct ways to lessen the aftermath of such crucial factors.

The importance of this study is that it’ll serve as an aid not only for the students

but for the teachers and the institution itself. It’ll help students fabricate ideas on how

they’ll improve their grades. It’ll help teachers excogitate new teaching strategies that

will help ameliorate their student’s understanding and knowledge intake. And lastly, it’ll

help the institution produced knowledgeable and reliable future laborers.

This study aims to provide awareness to the consequences student’s will

encounter in the future as an aftermath of their ignorance when it comes to English.

Holistically thinking, this disquisition does not refer only to students, but instead, this is

for all of us since we are all involved in the erection of the future.

Definition of Terms:

Statement of the Problem

English has been very useful to us, from communicating to everything that we do,

English has been a part of it. But how does Senior High School students take English.

This study would like to determine the gap between those who achieve the

considered “Very Satisfactory” rating in English and those who failed among the Senior

High School students of Bicol Merchant Marine College Incorporated for the School

Year 2019-2020.

Specifically talking, this study would like to provide answers to the following

questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the students?

a. Name

b. Age

c. Gender

2. What is the percentage between those who reached the considered “very

satisfactory” rating in English and those who failed?

3. What could be the reason that students have trouble reaching the mentioned rating

in English?

4. What possible suggestions and recommendations can be presented?

10 | P a g e
Scope and Delimitation

The study of determining the ratio between who reached the considered “Very

Satisfactory” rating in English between those who have difficulties reaching it is a very

broad issue. But in this study, we are going to focus only on the Grade 12 Senior High

School students of Bicol Merchant Marine College Incorporated since they are the ones

who happen to finish their English classes in their recent year. The study will take place

in the BMMCI Piot Campus for the duration of its 1st semester. We will be conducting a

survey on selected students and also, we will be interviewing English teachers of the

institution. This study will be presenting accurate information about the issue from Bicol

Merchant Marine College Incorporated’s students.

11 | P a g e
Significance of the Study

The study aims to benefit not only the students but also the teachers and the

institution itself. With this, students would be able to realize the consequences of their

action and teach themselves how to make way for the recommendations we will be

providing for their own good. While on the other hand, teachers will be given the chance

to use this as basis for them to think of a better strategy on teaching to help students reach

their goals. As for the institution, holistically thinking, this would affect their image

towards future enrollees.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and studies after an in-depth

and thorough research conducted by the researchers. This chapter displays local

and foreign literature which is related to this research. Lastly, to fully understand

the research, this chapter will exhibit the conceptual framework of the study.

Local Literature

The Philippines is one of the well-known English-speaking countries in

Asia and along with it is a high edge towards global job opportunities. However,

behind this prominent identity, there is a growing concern towards English

proficiency not only for students but also for graduates alike (Opetina and Laxa,

2000).

In an English proficiency test conducted by TOEFL (Test of English as a

Foreign Language) in 2010, the Philippines scored 88 and ranked 35th out of 163

countries worldwide. Among Asian countries that were included in the list, only

Singapore (ranked 3rd with a score of 98) and India (ranked 19th with a score of

92) ranked higher than the Philippines. Taiwan (score of 76), Thailand (score of

75), and Vietnam (score of 73) settled in the middle rankings, while other Asian

countries fell on the lower half of the list, with South Korea and North Korea

ranking 80th and 96th respectively. China ranked at the 105th place with a score of

77, while Japan is at the 135th spot with a score of 70. (The Philippines Is Among

The Top Asian Countries For English Language Proficiency, October 2015). This

simply exhibits that Philippines’ aptitude in English is the best in Asia after

Singapore, along with India and Pakistan.

13 | P a g e
Proficiency is the state or quality of being proficient. Being proficient

simply means being competent in a certain field. Doors of opportunity and

success are widely open to those who are proficient. English proficiency refers to

mastering English language itself for the betterment of future opportunities. The

door of opportunities for the Philippines is slowly closing due to the decreasing

number of English proficient Filipinos. In 2018, GMA News mentioned that the

level of English proficiency of college graduates from the Philippines is lower

than the target English proficiency of high school students in Thailand, according

to the study conducted by the Hopkins International Partners a Philippine

representative of the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC).

Philippines was tagged as the world’s best country when it come to

Business English Proficiency, in not just one but two consecutive years (Business

English Index, 2012). Only the Philippines managed to attain a score 7.0, putting

the country within a range of high proficiency that indicates the ability to lead

business discussions and perform complex tasks. However, the quality of

education in the Philippines especially when it comes to English is continuously

depleting. This notion is based on the results of achievement tests and board

examinations (International Journal of Languages, Literature and Linguistics, vol.

2, no. 2, June 2016)

In the fast-growing international industry of Business Process Outsourcing

(BPO), the Philippines today is the top voice outsourcing destination in the world

surpassing India in 2012, because of Filipinos’ acknowledged proficiency in the

English language (Enhancing Our Student’s Proficiency in English, April 2017).

The Philippines stands out not only nationally but internationally which in return

provides a positive impact on our economy, however, Filipinos are becoming less

proficient in English, where will this bring us, if only we can maintain being

English Proficient.

14 | P a g e
The question is, “How can we be English proficient? “. According to

Domingo (2016), a certain mastery of the English subject has to precede the

understanding of the subject. If we connect it with our studies, Domingo simply

wants us to know that for us to be proficient in English, we shall but take English

seriously and see how efficient our efforts are with the use of our grades.

Importance of English and English Proficiency

The most significant contribution of the English language to the

Philippines though might be on the socio-economic field. Due to the Filipinos

strong command of the English language, several opportunities opened for their

country. These opportunities are mainly: overseas employment, the outsourcing

industry, tourism, and enrollment of international students in the Philippines.

Racca and Lasaten (2016) provided that students need to be proficient in

English for a better grasp of knowledge in Technology, Science, and

Mathematics. This simply means that mastering English itself is also cultivating a

much concrete passage towards honing skills in other subjects. This was proved

by Racca and Lasaten after conducting a study in the Philippines involving 216

students with the aim to determine the relationship between English language

proficiency and other academic performances. It was disclosed that students’

academic performance in other subjects has significantly been impacted by their

English mobility.

A person who does not know English, for instance, may not have access to

the world’s scientific and technological discoveries that are predominantly written

in English according to Pramila et al. (2018). This emphasizes the importance of

English subject wherein English is considered to be the ticket to a much thorough

and in-depth understanding on other subjects.

15 | P a g e
Only 7 percent of high school graduates can properly speak, read or

understand English (Jimenez, 2018). At this rate, the track toward economic

progress is simply hindered due to lack of educated persons which simply carries

the economy of the Philippines itself. This could be the downfall of the

Philippines we desire.

Declination of English Proficiency

English proficiency benefitted us not only as individuals but also as a

country. Despite of the economic benefits of being an English-speaking nation,

Filipinos haven’t been maximizing it and in fact, studies are showing that the

Filipinos’ grasp of the English language is slipping while other Asians are fast

catching up. Studies done by Reputable international organizations such as the

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) shows that the English

skills of Filipinos are deteriorating (Decline, 2016). With this phenomenon on the

move, where would Philippines end up? That is why this research is conducted

for us to know how many are those who have difficulties and provide the best

solution possible to prevent this kind of thing to happen.

According to the same article, one of the most commonly given reason for

the decline in the English proficiency was the introduction of the Filipino as the

national language. When the Philippines gained independence in 1946, English

was so well established that it remained an official language, along with Spanish.

Then, in 1973, the constitution imposed by the dictator Ferdinand Marcos made

Filipino (based on the local tongue of Manila and the surrounding provinces) an

official language alongside English. Wherein due to this act, Filipino

overpowered English resulting to the declination of English proficiency.

English is our Lingua Franca. It is also considered as our own language.

Language has different purposes. Its primary purpose is to communicate. Through

16 | P a g e
language, we can convey information and emotions while understanding others

simultaneously. Language is the main means of interaction between humans

merging individuals and creating human societies. Language, through intelligent

usage, has also the capability to influence one’s way of thinking making it as a

useful tool for provoking such as propaganda. Language though can be utilized in

more ways and the Philippines shows us that a language, English, can be used for

economic development.

Foreign Literature

For numerous multinational students, English proficiency is often their

main concern. Lack of knowledge when it comes to English may lead to several

problems. Learning English can open many doors, so take comfort from the fact

that there are a range of helpful resources available to you and lots of options to

suit your needs, because you’ll regret it when you set English aside.

English is spoken in about 84 countries worldwide. These countries range

from the world's most developed nations, to emerging economies and markets.

Learning English therefore provides an exceptional and versatile advantage to

students. The English language is also one of the official languages in a large

number of International agencies and organizations; it is the official language of

the United Nations, the European Union, the OPEC, the International Criminal

Court, and the International Court of Justice just to name a few. The study of

English Language is an important tool for any individual who wants to operate

effectively on the international stage (Ellett, 2015).

But why is English that important? First, communication. Communication

is an integral part of human existence and development. Engaging in it is

inevitable particularly in a business setting as it is relative to promoting an idea,

product, service, or organization to create value or make a sale (Khan). Successful

17 | P a g e
businesses recognize the value of communication in the workplace which requires

proficiency in oral and written communication skills. The latter is engineered to

display information effectively on the page in order to get results, to inform, to

request, to entertain, or to persuade (Holloway). In fact, 90% of all business

transactions involve written communications (DePompa). Hence effective

business communication demands ideas, thoughts, and concepts to be expressed

and presented in an orderly, formal, and effective manner (The Related Literature

and Studies English Language, 2016). And since we are talking about things

internationally, it is obvious that what is being referred to here is English since it

is our universal language.

J.C. Richards (2006) states that the ever-growing demand for good

communication skills in the English language has created a huge demand for

teaching English and an enormous demand for quality language teaching

materials and resources. Learners today set themselves the demanding goal of

being able to master English on a high proficiency level. Even employers demand

that members of the workforce exhibit good English language skills, both oral and

written. The demand for an appropriate teaching methodology is therefore an

imperative (J. C. Richards).

According to Carol Rzadkiewicz, communication is vital in an

organization because it not only connects members within a specific department

but also connects them to those from other departments, from other branches, and,

in today’s global economy, from around the world. Moreover, communication

can make the difference between success and failure for a company. Therefore, if

we Filipinos happen to work with persons from other countries, English will

make it easy for us to connect and collaborate with them.

Learning English can help you pursue and obtain more career

opportunities. These days, the job market is global—many companies need

employees who can communicate with partners and clients all over the world.

18 | P a g e
Very often, that means finding employees who speak English (The Importance of

English: 5 Ways the Language Can Change Your Life, Rachel Kelly). English can

simply the gateway pass which can open the door to many opportunities that can

later change our life for the better.

According to the English Learning Centre, English is the dominant

business language and it has become almost a necessity for people to speak

English if they are to enter a global workforce. Research from all over the world

shows that cross-border business communication is most often conducted in

English and many international companies expect employees to be fluent in

English. Global companies such as Airbus, Daimler-Chrysler, Fast Retailing,

Nokia, Renault, Samsung, SAP, Technicolor, and Microsoft in Beijing, have

mandated English as their official corporate language. In addition, in 2010 the

company Rakuten, a Japanese cross between Amazon and eBay, made it

mandatory for their 7,100 Japanese employees to be able to speak English. The

importance of learning English in the international marketplace cannot be

understated - learning English really can change your life. This why passing

English is such a big fuss. English can change everything in your life.

English proficiency should be taken seriously simply because everything

around us today is run by English. And for us to have access to everything we

want, we have to develop and hone are English skills for us not to encounter any

dispute. We can only determine if our skill is in progress with the use of the rating

we acquire while studying. That’s why this study came to existence, to determine

why others have difficulties in English and also to provide solutions to help them.

19 | P a g e
Conceptual Framework

The proposed study will make use of respondents from the Senior High School

students of Bicol Merchant Marine College Incorporated. This study will make use of

independent variables, the respondent’s profile that’ll serve as the researcher’s guide in

selecting then proponents of what data and information should be gathered. Particularly,

the respondents’ profile will be composed of their name, age, sex, and address.

This research will use a quantitative research design. Which will utilize survey

questionnaires in collecting and gathering information. With the survey questionnaires,

the researchers would easily provide frequency count, percentage, tables, and graphs.

Recommendations will be presented later on for the fulfillment and finally apply

the purpose of this research.

CHAPTER III
Research Design and Methodology

This research utilizes a quantitative research strategy simply because this study

aims to show numerical and empirical presentation of the data that will be garnered. A

quantitative research type is suited for this study wherein it’ll be able to showcase the

purpose of this research in a manner much clearer than words, numbers. This research

also uses tables, graphs, and other modes of graphic organizers for readers to further

understand what it is trying to imply.

The instruments that'll be used will be discussed next along with its validity, the

advantages and disadvantages, and its importance for the study.

For the purposes of this research, the researcher came up with the idea of using th

basic quantitative research tool, a survey. The survey questionnaires will be distributed

among selected Senior High School students of Bicol Merchant Marine College Inc.

simply because the study focuses on their state and aims to serve as their aid.

The advantages and disadvantages of the methods used will be discussed below.

A survey is selected for this research since it is a reliable source of data. Not only

that, it is also a rapid method of collecting data from multiple respondents in an efficient

and timely manner. This is simply the best method to be used especially for studies with

multiple and complex purposes wherein time is the adversary. However, the disadvantage

of a survey is its fixed question format wherein the free-flowing ideas from the

respondents is simply held by the given question resulting to gathering only limited

information.

The sampling will be conducted in a normal way of a survey. The survey

questionnaires will be given to the selected respondents for them to answer the given

questions in the provided survey form. While the given survey forms is being answered,

an interview will be conducted to the English teachers of the selected students to lessen

22 | P a g e
the time consumed of the data collection process. There will be 35 respondents that'll be

given survey forms, all of them are Senior High School Students of Bicol Merchant

Marine College Inc. This data collection process will take 1 week to be finished. The full

transcripts of the interviews as well as the questionnaires are attached in the appendices.

The survey questionnaire is composed of nine questions. Four questions that'll be

answered by every respondent, two additional questions for those who passed the

considered “very satisfactory rating” and three additional questions for those who failed.

For the purposes of this research, the question involves personal data which will be taken

into full private usage only.

Ethical issues are never drawn out in this kind of projects, these issues should always

be taken into account. The most common issue is related with the informed consent of the

participants. All of the respondents were informed of what will they be going to do. A

letter is read among them to inform them about the conduct of a research in their

premises. Their identity as well as the names of the organizations they belong to has been

kept in strict confidentiality.

Not only that, the privacy of the institution has been taken into consideration with the

mere fact that it has strict regulations when it comes to their reputation. That's why the

researchers decided to send a consent letter to the coordinator to inform the school of

what is going to happen.

Presentation, Analysis, and Interpretation of Data

This chapter presents the outcomes of the data garnered, the results of the
conducted analyzation of data, and the interpretation of our findings. Each segment of
this study will be presented by tables and graphs that shows the results from the survey
conducted regarding the Senior High School Students of Bicol Merchant Marine College
Inc. who had Difficulties Reaching the Considered “Very Satisfactory” Rating in

high school students of Bicol Merchant Marine College Inc. Let’s start with the males,
Table 2 above shows that majority of our male respondents are 18 years old covering
54.84% out of our total number of respondents. 15 respondents are 17 years old which
covers 38.71% while 2 respondents are 19 years old covering 6.45%.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THOSE WHO REACHED THE CONSIDERED “VERY
SATISFACTORY” RATING ENGLISH AND THOSE WHO FAILED.

English proficiency has led many of us to a much fortunate career. With English
we can easily grasp any international level career. But how can we put our hands to these
opportunities if we already forgot the essence of English to our living. Some senior high
school students of Bicol Merchant Marine College Inc. are having trouble reaching the
considered “Very Satisfactory” rating in English. Tables and graphs will be presented as
this study continues.

Before we proceed with the rating gaps of our respondents, let us first determine
how they themselves see English and how high their comprehension is.

Table 4. Significance of English to the respondents.

English, they must have outstanding capability when it comes to comprehension and
other skills in English. The researchers gave the respondents the chance to rate their
capability. And this is the outcome.

3 scale brackets are provided by the researcher for the respondents to use in order
to rate their comprehension and other skills in English, 1-3, 4-7, and 8-10.

The result shows that 11.43% of our respondents rated themselves at a scale of
1-3 which in fact is the lowest rating. While 65.71% of our respondents rate themselves
the average scale bracket which is 4-7. Lastly, 22.86% of our respondents rated
themselves with the highest provided scale bracket, 8-10.

Table 5 above indicates that majority of the respondents are at an average state of
comprehension capability which makes things a lot clearer when it comes to determining
the reasons why some students fails.

Let us now proceed to determining the percentage between those who reached the
considered “very satisfactory” rating and English and those who failed. Which will be
presented in the next page.

REASONS WHY STUDENTS HAVE DIFFICULTIES REACHING THE
CONSIDERED “VERY SATISFACTORY” RATING IN ENGLISH

Each and every action we make is matched with its own consequences. Failing to
acquire high ratings is simply a consequence of our doings. Now, let’s discuss about why
students have difficulties reaching the considered “Very Satisfactory” and how others
manage to achieve such ratings.

Table 7. Reasons why some students fail to achieve the considered “Very Satisfactory”
rating in English (base from students who failed themselves).

Some of us are wondering, why does others have difficulties the considered

“Very Satisfactory” rating English? Above is the answer. Table 7 aims to enlighten us as

to why others fail in English. The data provided to this part of the study is produced by

those who failed themselves, there are 15 of them. But since we ask them to choose 2

30 | P a g e
possible answers, we will be sticking with 30 total respondents since 15 persons times 2

routines.

Table 7 shows that 30% of the respondents agrees that “Being Irresponsible”,

which is in fact true because by being irresponsible, you won’t be able to perform and to

participate in task which involves English. 26.67% of the respondents agrees that “Not

Being Interested” can cause your ratings to a downfall. Interest in anything that we do is

everything, why? Because if you lack interest in that particular thing, your will to

continue and do that also fades. 20% agrees that “Being Dependent on Others” can also

decrease your chances of having high ratings because you rely more on others instead of

relying more on what you have learned. By relying on others, the risk of you failing is at

stake, how? What if that person you are depending too have no idea about the topic also?

It is a lot easier if you would rely on what you have learned. 16.67% of the respondents

agrees with “Escaping Classes” which is in fact accurate. If you were to escape class, you

would miss sessions and lessons as well as activities that is required for your ratings. If

you lack from those requirements, the downfall of your grades is as clear as the clearest

waters. 6.66% of our respondents agrees with “Incompetence”. Incompetence simply

means lacking the quality of being competent which is really important when it comes to

acquiring high grades.

We shouldn’t just blame it all to the students. They are not alone in the process of

learning, their teacher is also involved. The researchers decided to require the

respondents to rate their English teachers in a scale of 1-10, with this, we would be able

to determine if the quality of teaching affects the rating of the students.

rated the highest scale, the instructors are no one to be blamed regarding this issue.

Before we proceed with what should be done for those who failed to also achieve

the considered “Very Satisfactory” rating in English, let us first know how those who

reached the very satisfactory rating achieved that.

23.33% of the respondents agreed with “Studying Hard” where in fact it really is
the simplest way for someone to acquire high grades. If you were to study hard, you
would have the upper hand in every session you’ll take giving you the advantage. 30% of
the respondents agreed with “Focusing on the Subject”. While 28.33% of the respondents

CHAPTER V
Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation

35 | P a g e
This chapter presents the summary of the study, conclusions produced with the

data gathered, and recommendations formulated by the results garnered. The scope of

this chapter will only range from the interpreted data which is gathered through a survey.

The content of this chapter is based on the results garnered from the respondents.

Summary of Research

English has been part of any man’s success, through which English is considered

to be the universal language used not only in our daily living but also in the business

industry. All educational institutions around the world offers English subject for their

students to be more effective future laborers. But still, behind the efforts exerted by these

institutions, the progress in which they are aiming at is still at stake because of the

students themselves.

This study is focuses on the Senior High School students of Bicol Merchant

Marine College Inc. who had difficulties reaching the considered “Very Satisfactory”

rating in English for the school year 2019-2020. The considered “Very Satisfactory”

rating refers to the rating bracket 85%-89% according to the DepEd Order No. 8 S. 2015.

A survey was conducted with 35 grade 12 respondents which is aided by

questionnaires regarding the issue. The data gathered will serve as the basis for each

discovery we’ll encounter.

With the data we have in-hand, the researchers were able to determine the

difference between those who reached the considered “Very Satisfactory” rating and

those who haven’t in terms of their ratings. The researchers happen to use the two major

subjects in the Senior High School curriculum which incorporates English, “Reading and

Writing Skills (RAWS)” and “English for Academic and Professional Purposes (EAPP)”.

For RAWS, 14.28% is covered by respondents who had 90%-95% and 34.29% of

our respondents got 75%-84%. As for the majority, with a percentage of 51.43%, 85%-

89% rating scale is achieved by our respondents. While for EAPP, 14.28% of our

respondents got 90%-95% and as for the rating bracket 75%-84% and 85%-89%, both

got 42.86% of our respondents.

36 | P a g e
From there on, we could already say that majority of our respondents reached the

considered “Very Satisfactory” rating but still almost half of them failed. As the study

continues, the researchers were able to determine how some of the respondents reached

the considered “Very Satisfactory” rating and why some of them cannot.

First, let’s focus on those who failed to reach our rating basis. 30% of them stated

that because of irresponsibility, they faced difficulties in the subject. Which is really

accurate because responsibility is such a big aspect in terms of learning. While 26.67% of

them stated that because of lack of interest, they end up failing the subject. Which is in

fact really accurate since interest in such things is responsible for the motivation we need

to work hard. 20% of them stated that they had been very dependent on others as to why

they end up failing the subject. Being an independent student means achieving high

ratings at ease, while being too dependent on others means failing the subject when the

time come that your alone. 16.67% of them admitted that they had been escaping class.

Escaping class is simply escaping the sessions that is supposed to be your opportunity to

learn, escaping that opportunity means meeting low ratings. Lastly, 6.66% percent of

them stated that due to incompetence that they are given such low ratings. Everyone

could agree simply because being incompetent is simply accepting your destiny of

failing.

But since the respondents are not the only ones involved in the process of

learning, the researchers thought of letting them rate the quality of teaching their

instructors offered. But still, 62.86% of the respondents rated their instructor a scale of 8-

10. Therefore, the teachers are not to be blamed in this issue.

Not only that, the researchers managed to determine as to how some respondents

reached the rating basis with the aid of the respondents who succeeded themselves.

23.33% of the respondents agreed with “Studying Hard” where in fact it really is the

simplest way for someone to acquire high grades. If you were to study hard, you would

have the upper hand in every session you’ll take giving you the advantage. 30% of the

respondents agreed with “Focusing on the Subject”. While 28.33% of the respondents

37 | P a g e
agreed with “Attending Every Session” and only 18.34% agreed with “Advance

Reading”.

The researchers also required the respondents to help them decide of the possible

recommendations for this issue to be resolved. With the ideas formulated by the

researchers for the recommendations, they included it in the survey and the results will be

presented at the “Recommendation” segment of this chapter.

With that being said, let’s proceed with the next segment.

Conclusions
38 | P a g e
The formulated conclusion will be presented in a bullet form. Each and every

concluded statement is based from the respondent’s response, the researchers are no one

to be blame for what it may provide.

With the gathered information, the researchers were able to provide conclusions

regarding the Senior High School students who had difficulties reaching the considered

“Very Satisfactory” rating in English. The formulated conclusions are the following:

Majority of the respondents are able to reach the considered “Very Satisfactory”

rating in English covering 65.71% of their total population in “Reading and

Writing Skills” and 57.14% for “English for Academic and Professional

Purposes”.

Teachers are not to be blamed regarding this issue since the data gathered

provided us that in a scale of 1-10, majority of the respondents rated their

instructor’s quality of teaching an 8-10 scale, this is confirmed by 62.86% of the

total number of respondents.

The students who failed to reach the considered very satisfactory rating admitted

their mistakes. 30% of them stated that because of irresponsibility, they faced

difficulties in the subject. While 26.67% of them stated that because of lack of

interest, they end up failing the subject. 20% of them stated that they had been

very dependent on others as to why they end up failing the subject. 16.67% of

them admitted that they had been escaping class. Lastly, 6.66% percent of them

stated that due to incompetence that they are given such low ratings.

The respondents who happen to reached the considered “Very Satisfactory” rating

aided this study by providing what they have done to achieve such high ratings.

23.33% of the respondents agreed with “Studying Hard” where in fact it really is

the simplest way for someone to acquire high grades. 30% of the respondents

agreed with “Focusing on the Subject”. While 28.33% of the respondents agreed

with “Attending Every Session” and only 18.34% agreed with “Advance

Reading”.

39 | P a g e
The ones who are to be blamed due the failure of some students are they

themselves. They are the ones who create their ratings, that’s why the ratings

they’ll acquire depends on how they handle the situation.

This issue has such devastating effects in the future of the students but it can still

be resolved. With simultaneous cooperation of students, teachers, and the

institution, this issue can be resolved like as if it is a piece of cake.

Now that we’re done with the conclusion, let us proceed with the last and final

segment of this study. From there on, the recommendations for this study to be resolved

will be presented. Not only that, recommendation for future researchers that will continue

this study will be presented.

40 | P a g e
Recommendations

This segment will be divided into 3 partitions. Recommendation for the students,

recommendation for teachers and the institution, and recommendation for those who’ll

continue this study.

The following recommendations are formulated with the aid of the respondents.

The recommendations are based on the data gathered and not just formulated easily.

Recommendations for the Students

Study hard. When it comes to achieving high grades, nothing beats studying and

working hard to achieve that, for with glory comes great effort and sacrifices.

Focus on the subject. This doesn’t mean that you have to set aside other subjects,

but instead, add a little bit attention to English since it is not at simple as it

sounds.

Attend to your classes. It may sound so simple but for others it is really hard to do

since they tend to do what they want, and attending their class is not on of them.

Perform some advance reading. Reading is the easiest way for you to practice

your progress of learning in English.

Recommendations for the Teachers and the Institution

Change in teaching strategy. If the teachers happen to notice that their way of

teaching is not that effective, they also have to adjust since they are the ones

disseminating information regarding English.

Create school organization or organize events which incorporates English. School

organizations can help the English teachers disseminate knowledge regarding

English in their own manner which attracts some student’s attention.

41 | P a g e
Recommendations for Researchers who’ll continue this study

Focus on how the student’s daily routine affects their ratings. For example, their

address, how does that affect their studies.

Provide more recommendations for faster progress.

If possible, try to conduct a survey on every student and include their subject

teacher’s insights.

Note: Each and every statement that the researchers provided is based from the

respondent’s response. They only interpreted it to provide the knowledge we need

regarding the issue.
