Nagaur TM 01 Project

Project Overview

• The major objective of this project is to provide potable drinking water in the water crisis area of Bikaner
and Nagaur district. Nagaur district is located on the fringes of Thar Desert with no perennial rivers. So,
major source of water supply is ground water which is saline and non-potable in most zones. Groundwater,
a major source of water, contains excess Fluoride. Hence to provide safe, dependable and potable drinking
water source to these fluoride affected drinking water problematic villages, it has been proposed to draw
water from Indira Gandhi Canal.
• The source of water is IGNP and in order to store the raw water a reservoir of 5310 ML capacity is
constructed from their a water is treated from 250 MLD WTP and pumped to 11 intermediate clear water
reservoir’s and clear pump houses which cover a 256 KM of MS and 207 KM of DI pipeline.

PROCESS DESCRIPTION
Broadly the process scheme for the WTP is described below:
Inlet Chamber
Raw water will be delivered to the inlet chamber within proposed WTP through raw water main. Inlet chamber is
provided to ensure laminar feed water flow. The velocity of flow is broken in this inlet chamber. The supernatant
from the ssed backwash collection tank will be recycled to the inlet chamber through the Recycle sump. Chlorine is
injected by bottom mounted diffuser disc/pipes for disinfection.
Nagaur TM 01 Project
Measuring channel & Parshall Flume
Water from inlet chamber flows through a R.C.C. channel installed with Parshall flume with an ultrasonic flow
transmitter to monitor the flow through the channel.
Distribution Box
The flow from Parshall flume shall terminate into a distribution box to divide the raw water in equal quantity to each
flash mixer unit.
Flash Mixer
The raw water from the Distribution Box enters into Flash Mixing units for thorough, dispersion of the coagulant
chemical. Alum and lime solution is dosed at the inlet of the flash mixer at the rate of 6000 LPH to 600 LPH
respectively and polyelectrolyte is dosed at a rate of 500 LPH at the outlet of flash mixer. In the flash mixer, coagulant
chemicals which are added are mixed quickly and violently with the water. The rapid intense mixing of the chemicals
with raw water is provided in the form of mechanical agitation, with a short mixing time of 1 min. This helps in the
formation of micro flocs and results in the proper utilization of the chemical coagulant.
Clariflocculators and Clarified Water Channel
The Clariflocculator arrangement is based on a central feed and flocculation and clarification. Five number of
Clariflocculator in RCC were constructed with a central platform and a radial scrapper system in each of the units. It
has a central area for coagulation and flocculation and an outer area for settling. After flash mixing, the coagulated
water from the Flash Mixers enters through a pipe into the central Flocculation Zone. Each flocculation zone is fitted
with 4 nos. paddle type slowly revolving agitators for the flocculation of already coagulated suspended solids.
The water from the flocculation zone flows into the clarifier zone to achieve settling of flocs formed in the flocculation
zone. The Clarifier is provided for the removal of turbidity, suspended matter, organic etc. The clarified water flows
through launders fitted with V – notch weir plates and through clarified water channels it will reach the filter inlet
channel. The sludge from the Clariflocculators will be taken to the Sludge Balance Tank.
Clariflocculator Bypass
A bypass to the clarification stage of treatment is provided by means of a channel between the Distribution box and
the Inlet Channel leading to the filters. The channel has been isolated by means of electrically operated gates. During
periods when the quality of the raw water is suitable the bypass channel will be opened so that the water treatment
plant may be operated as an in-line filtration plant in which coagulated water is passed directly to the filters.
Filter Inlet Channel
The Clarified water from clarified water channels or from the bypass channel enters into filter inlet channel and it is
then routed to each Rapid gravity sand filter
Rapid Gravity Sand Filters
The clarified water from the clarifier flows to the Gravity Sand Filter through Filter Inlet Channel. Each filter bed is of
twin type. These filters can even operate even if two filters are taken under maintenance/for backwash; remaining
filters are in a position to achieve desired water quality on average basis.
The filter is of declining rate type. Each filter bed is of self-contained and capable of working under full or part load
independently of the other. The filter run is not less than 24 hours of operation.
a. Filtration is done by gravity based downwards flow through a bed of filter sand supported by a layer of suitable
graded filter gravel and filtered water gets collected through a polypropylene nozzle under drainage system.
Nagaur TM 01 Project
b. The Filter bed washing is done by a sequential application of air at a rate of 55 m 3/hr/m2, combined water and
air for a period of 2 minutes followed by a 10 minutes water rinse at the rate of 25 m 3/hr/m2.
Filtered Water Channel
The filtered water is collected through the under drain system with nozzles and flows into an outlet chamber and
into the common covered filtered water channel. The filtered water from the filters is conveyed to the Chlorine
Contact Tank through this Channel
Backwash Tank
One no. of backwash tank with two compartment of volume 542 m 3 each is provided over the filter house to supply
water to meet the requirement of filter backwash & other service requirement. Two centrifugal pumps (1W+1S), each
of 545 m3/hr capacity are provided to fill the backwash tank from filtered water channel. The filter water channel is
locally lowered for the pump suction and chlorine is dosed at the filter water channel to supply the disinfected water
to the overhead tank. When water in backwash tank reaches a minimum level the pump will automatically start to
fill the backwash tank and this water can be used for other service requirements.
Chlorine Contact Tank
The Chlorine Contact Tank shall be of RCC construction consisting of two (1 working + 1 standby) compartments
provided with baffles. The filtered water from the filter is taken through a filtered water channel which leads to a
chlorine contact tank where chlorine is added as disinfectant through diffuser arrangement. The outlet from chlorine
contact tank is provided with free fall weir arrangement to transfer the chlorinated water to Clear water reservoir.
Chemical Building
The chemical building is included to provide necessary space for the storage of chemicals and for housing solution
preparation tanks, dosing equipment, etc.
The following chemical dosing systems of adequate capacity solution tanks with agitators and dosing pumps
a) Alum solution preparation & Dosing system:
Three nos. dosing tanks are provided at the first floor of Chemical Building. The dosing of Alum [(Al 2SO4)3.18H2O] is
done based on the flow and turbidity of the raw water. Dosage shall be decided based on jar test on actual sample at
the site laboratory. Each dosing tank holds 10% solution for 8 hours.
b) Lime slurry preparation, Saturator & Dosing system:
Lime [Ca(OH)2] is used to maintain the alkalinity of raw water. The dosage of lime is decided depending upon the
dosage of alum and alkalinity of raw water. Three nos. of Vertical concrete tanks are provided for the preparation of
Lime Slurry. Each tank holds 5% lime slurry concentration solution for 8 hours. There are 2 nos (1W+1S) of slurry
transfer pumps of 4700 LPH capacity to transfer the prepared lime slurry to 4 nos. of Lime Saturators tanks that are
provided to meet the pre and post lime dosing requirements.
