Assignment Probability and Stat - Test

The document contains an assignment with 8 problems related to probability distributions and concepts such as independent events, conditional probability, and finding probabilities from joint and marginal distributions. The problems involve validating probability statements, calculating probabilities of events for systems involving multiple random variables, checking if functions satisfy the properties of probability distributions, and computing probabilities based on given mean and standard deviation values.

1. A ship is fitted with three engines A, B and C. These three engines function independently of each other
with probabilities ½ , ¼, ¼ respectively. For ship to be operational at least two of its engines must
function. Let E denote the event that the ship is operational and E 1 ,E2 and E3 denote the events that
engines A,B and C are functioning. Then validate the following.
(a). P(E1C / E) = 3/16
(b) P(E / E2) = 5/16
(c) P( Exactly two engines of the ship are functioning / E) = 7/8.

2. Technicians regularly make repairs when breakdowns occur on an automated production line. Janak,
who services 20% of the breakdowns, makes an incomplete repair 1 time in 20.Tarun ,who services
60% of the breakdowns ,makes an incomplete repair 1 time in 10 Gautham, who services 15% of the
breakdowns, makes an incomplete repair 1 time in 10 and Prasad ,who services 5% of the breakdowns,
makes an incomplete repair 1 time in 20.For the next problem with the production line diagnosed as
being due to an initial repair that was incomplete, what is the probability that this initial repair was
made by Janak?

3. Check whether the following can serve as probability distributions:

a. f(x) = ( x - 2) / 2 for x = 1,2,3,4

b. f(x) = (x2 ) / 25 for x = 0,1,2,3,4

4. A distributor of bean seeds determines from extensive tests that 5% of large batch seeds will not
germinate. He sells the seeds in packets of 200 and guarantees 90% germination. Determine the
probability that a particular packet will violate the guarantee.

5. Given that the mean heights of students in class is 159cm with S.D of 20cm.Find the how many
students heights lie between 150cm and 170cm if there are 100 students in the class.

6. Check whether the following can serve as probability distributions:
