Innovative and Interactive Technologies in Learning
The world is rapidly transforming in due to the emerging role of the 4 th Industrial Revolution, where
innovative technologies are on the rise and fundamentally changing the conventional ways of doing
businesses. In this digital era, the use of modern ICT technologies have been ever increasing, such as the
smartphones, digital device and smart applications. With greater access to these devices, our young
generation and students are more digitally connected than ever before who are growing with internet
and cellular technologies. Today, the young children are “Digital Native” who tend to outsource many
cognitive tasking to these modern technologies.
In contrast, we have not been able to advance our education systems at schools to commensurate with
these emerging technologies. Therefore, there seems to be a concern that the means of learning and
acquiring knowledge are still based on archaic model and lag behind many technological endeavors that
our kids are well accustomed to at their homes with use of modern ICT tools. Thus, we may need to
overhaul the pedagogical approach, with adoption of innovative and interactive teaching methods to
engage our youth in a learning environment with logical use of modern learning aids and digital tools
Now, the debate is on how to implement the intelligent systems which are hassle free with minimum
human interventions. Owing to the current challenges in providing all-inclusive solutions in 21th
Century, Information technology plays a pivotal role in the education sector as well. Moreover, the ICT
has transformed the education ecosystem to the next level where a classroom is not only confined to
one teacher and couple of students, but also it has changed the overall learning environment where the
teacher acts as a facilitator between students and the knowledge gateway.
In order to address this challenge and broaden the understanding the technologies and loopholes in the
education sector, National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has initiated a welcome move,
offering a Masters level program- Innovative Technologies in Learning- where students go through
extensive processes and deep insight of teaching and learning methodologies, Universal designs for
learning, understanding the psychology of learning, creating interactive contents for students, advanced
pedagogy methods and entrepreneurship skills.
To bridge this digital gap in learning environments, instructional technologies and devices like interactive
smartboards, multi-vision classrooms, interactive digital books, AI based smart cameras and advanced
image processing can play a central role to enhance the level of concentration of students and also
support teacher to impart quality education, where students are fully engaged in a classroom
environment. Consequently, this creates an ideal environment for the students to achieve the Inquiry
based approach where students can learn by hands on experience and inquire “what, why and how”.
