For each situation depicted below, do the following:

a. Determine whether it involves classical or operant conditioning.


b. If it involves classical conditioning, identify the unconditioned stimulus (UCS), the
unconditioned response (UCR), and the conditioned stimulus (CS) and conditioned
response (CR).
c. If it involves operant conditioning, identify the behavior being reinforced, the
reinforcer (positive or negative reinforcer), and punishment (positive or negative).

1. A very bright and mildly painful light is turned on a rat. The rat has learned that he can turn
off the light be pressing a lever on the other side of the cage. As soon as the light comes on, the
rat runs across the cage and presses the lever.

2. Andre has gotten into the habit of yelling “Bye Mom” and then slamming the door very
loudly in his hurry to leave for a school in the morning. The door slam causes his mother to
flinch. After several days of this, Andre’s mother begins to flinch at the sound of her son’s
words, “Bye Mom.”

3. While listening to a song on his car radio, a man accidently crashed into a red car in front of
him. There after, whenever he sees red cars he has a severe anxiety attack.

4. Imagine that you have a friend who keeps the temperature of his home so high that on each
occasion when you visit him, you find yourself perspiring. The last time you visited him, you
noticed that as soon as you saw the house, you began to perspire.

5. A child spills milk all over the dinner table and Mom spanks the child. The child becomes very
careful about pouring milk at dinner.

6. Arthur goed to Vegas and wins $100,000 dollars. On his way home all he can think about is
planning his next trip to Vegas.

Analysis:

7. Anna is terrified of riding the elevator. Whenever she gets near she feels hot and sweaty. She
has taken to avoiding the elevator at all costs, even if it means a big walk up the stairs. Her
avoidance of elevators has become habitual and she has even avoided going to meetings in
buildings where she might have to ride in an elevator.
