I was introduced to Mrs. Anuradha Janbandhu by her daughter Miss. Himangini Janbandhu. I
found both of them to be warm-hearted, welcoming, trust-worthy, hard-working, reliable &
righteous. Very rarely we get to encounter such crystal hearted personalities thus I consider
myself lucky. Born & lived in India I’ve studied a sacred book Gita & if I were to express Gita
in less than 5 words it would be “be righteousness & be responsible”& these 2 attributes I
felt in both of them.

I’ve always wondered what makes the hard-working, helpful, humble, caring,
compassionate, courteous people suffer more than those that are self-enwrapped or stone-
hearted or carrying false superiority complexion. And after a long time I got its answer while
chanting “Namu Myoho Renge Kyo“ on Zoom for a mother figure or my beloved mother late
great Mrs. Anuradha Janbandhu who left for her heavenly services on 30th April 2020 (85
years of age). Her demise shattered me & it was too painful to cope. I could have remained
depressed for some days & let my melancholy make my mind more miserable but my late
great mother’s life taught me that it is something a self-engulfed human would do &
resilient & resolution focussed humans do something else to deal with grief.

I realised my late great mother won’t be happy if I’ll remain downhearted. My mother
reminded me how she dealt with travails before her marriage by serving the nation
unconditionally as a freedom fighter. After her marriage she remained dedicated,
disciplined, determined, patient, hard-working & sacrificial.

From my interactions with Himangini I’ve learnt that we as humans must use our energy &
efforts on figuring & working on solutions rather than worrying about problems. Himangini
will forever inspire for the way she took care of her mother. A time comes when a mother
becomes a daughter to her own daughter & that’s something Himangini realised too early &
helped her mother immigrate to Canada & took care of her & even took her for world tour
& all across US. Thus from my interactions with these 2 ennoble women I got my answer
that the good suffer more because it is only the good that discover some solutions & share it
to help others & it is the good that get most of the responsibilities so that they could inspire
others by undertaking them & the self-obsessed ones do nothing.
To best way to be happy is to make others happy & the most sensible way is to give
happiness to others is by empowering others & that’s what my late great mother did by
teaching hundreds of children till the time she spent in India (roughly till 70 years). After
moving to Canada she kept herself active by taking responsibilities of all house-hold chores
& ensured to never become a liability on anyone till she got diagnosed with cancer. Her life
taught me that the most sensible way to live is by doing something constructive or
productive all the time for others & self. This is a sensible solution to overcome sorrows. It
helps to develop as a human & eventually we contribute not only to our near & dear ones
but also to the society. Thus due to my late great mother’s exceptional way of living &
blessings I share my understanding on cancer that I had acquired while taking care of some
cancer patients & also learning about it while studying Pharmacy & working as a Pharmacist
& a lay Psychoanalyst.

Some other people that also enthused me to express my knowledge are my friends Nedal
Zoya & Shailendra Bhatt that recovered from Cancer & a few that couldn’t my childhood
friend Shailesh Mathur, Mr. Naresh Surthi & his mother, Reva Rai’s mother, my father’s
brother & numerous children whom I saw in Tata memorial hospital, Mumbai battling this
deadly disease, my mother’s liked actor late great Irfan Khan, had he not featured in a DD
national television show ‘Srikant’ my mother wouldn’t have named me Srikant & also due to
the fact that cancer is emerging as a leading death cause since recent decades & a worst
example of it is in Punjab (an Indian State) in which special trains are run for cancer patients.

Some of the care, diet, nutrition, practises & recipes mentioned are inspired by my mother’s
doings when she took care of her brother in law when he battled oesophageal cancer.

Part I Understanding cancer
1. What are cancer cells?

Our body is a production house of cells. These cells have a lifespan thus these cells
die due to a process called apoptosis; nonetheless new cells constantly grow too.
Thus in our body birth & death of cells happens daily. Just like in a factory at times
some defected goods get produced similarly at times in body too abnormal or
defected cells get produced due to several reasons mentioned in the upcoming
section ‘causes of cancer’. Some of these defected cells over a phase get decayed &
some do not get decayed & become rogue. Thus our body has normal cells & cancer
cells both.

2. How destruction of abnormal or rogue cells happen?

Our blood contains red blood cells & white blood cells. The function of red blood
cells is to supply oxygen & nutrients to all parts of body & take away carbon-dioxide.
White blood cells play a role in fighting infection. In white cells there are monocytes.
Role of monocytes is to patrol our blood & travel to all parts of body & search for
potential problems & reach damaged & infected areas. Monocytes understand the
difference between healthy & unhealthy tissues. For example when a cell is infected
with any bacteria or virus monocytes recognise it & destroy it. Thus monocytes
identify abnormal cells in body & consume it as a mechanism called autophagy [1].
Auto means on its own & phage means a bacteria or virus that uses body’s glucose
to produce more phage until the bacteria or virus gets consumed by monocytes.
Some intelligent monocytes after consuming abnormal or rogue cells digest them &
memorise those rogue cell’s protein & keep them on their surface. In our body there
are T-Cells. These T-cells are reserve immune cells. When T-cells get close to those
monocytes that have kept the impression of the protein of abnormal or rogue cells
they get mature & get an understanding about the abnormal ones & destroy them or
pass instruction to the abnormal ones to self-destroy thus T-cells quickly destroy the
abnormal or cancer cells wherever they are present in body & do not let them grow.

3. Why cancer happens?

When body’s functioning is normal it has control on the growth of normal cells &
destruction of rogue or cancer cells. Unfortunately during phases of poor immunity
or while battling chronic illness or other reasons like lifestyle disorders, chronic
constipation with old age causing disrupt to body’s autophagy mechanism
synchronisation or interplay of monocytes, dendrites, T-cells does not happen as
necessary. Thus the T-cells do not recognise cancer cells & fail to encumber them in
certain part of body & these cancer cells expand explosively.

Also in our body there is a gene called suicide gene. It signals every cell when they
must die. At times due to the aforesaid reasons like lifestyle disorders, chronic illness
suicide gene fails to signal the cells to die & ultimately the cell might not die &
eventually might mutate to alter its DNA & become rouge. This can be the inception
of a potential future cancer.

Although cells are obliged to obey instructions of body’s immune system however
there are some cancer cells that are too complicated. They do not listen to the
instructions of the immune system to self-destruct. They are rogue & want to do the
opposite of the instructions of the immune system. So they try to expand because
immune system wants them to self-destruct. These complicated cancer cells
understand that to expand they need to dodge detection. Thus these cancer cells
produce molecules that trick the immune system. One of these molecules is called
PD-L1. It interacts with the molecule of immune cell & makes immune cells ignore
cancer.

4. How cancer spreads in body?

Cancer is that stage where the rouge DNA of the cell that outlived its normal lifespan
& replicated thousands of times to produce a mass of cells that could be felt to
eventually become a tumour. Tumour can be benign or malignant. The malignant
behave abnormally & expand exponentially.

Nobel Prize Awardee 1931, Otto Heinrich Warburg findings were that rogue or
cancer cells unlike normal cells do not need oxygen for survival & growth[2], thus can
grow exponentially just by consuming glucose that body produces whereas normal
cells require glucose & oxygen both. As cancer cells only require glucose thus they
can grow faster than normal cells. Thus these cancer cells multiply rapidly by
consuming most of the glucose & do not let the normal cells around them consume
glucose, thus the normal cells around cancer cells die due to lack of nutrition & when
normal cells of a particular organ dies that very organ does not function as it must &
eventually body’s immune system gets too occupied to heal or resuscitate the organ
& overlook to overpower cancer cells & when immunity no longer fights against
cancer cells with full capacity, cancer cells get to expand exponentially.

For example if gallbladder gets cancer the cancer cells they will not let the normal
cells of gallbladder consume nutrients & eventually the normal cells will die &
gallbladder will not function as necessary & will be unable to produce bile & without
adequate bile body will get weak & when body gets weak cancer cells expand easily.

As cancer cells expand exponentially they require space thus they spread from one
part of body or one organ to another. A healthy body tries to hamper the growth of
these cancer cells & tries to inhibit it from reaching other organs however when
body is not healthy for long or if a person’s immunity is low or has several lifestyle
disorders or when person is too old then body’s functioning with all its organs is not
at sync. Due to it body fails to show signs of symptoms of cancer & constrain cancer
cells from reaching other organs & eventually cancer from Stage 1 or 2 (when cancer
has only affected a body part) reaches Stage 3 (when cancer reaches more than 1
organ) & so on.

5. Cancer spread stages: - Cancers are staged according to tumour size & how far it has
spread at the time of diagnosis. Stages help oncologists to determine what type of
treatment will be best to save a person or prolong his/her life. Below is mentioned
stages of cancer

a. In Situ: - Cells are found but not spread to surrounding tissues.

b. Localised: - Cancer cells have not spread beyond where it started.
c. Regional: - Cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes, tissues or organs.
d. Distant: - Cancer has reached distant organs or tissues

Or:

Stage 0 or Cancer in Situ: - Abnormal cells have been found but have not spread
into surrounding tissue. This is pre-cancer stage.

Stage 1: - The diagnosis of cancer is confirmed & it has only affected a body part

Stage 2 & 3: - It infers that cancer has spread to more than 1 body part & the
numbers represent how large the primary tumour has grown & how far the
cancer has spread

Stage 4: - Cancer has metastasized to distant parts of the body.

Some common types of cancer are: -

a. Blood b. Bladder c. Bone d. Brain

e. Breast f. Cervical g. Colorectal h. Gastric
i. Intestinal j. Kidney k. Leukaemia l. Lymphoma
m. Liver n. Lung o. Ovarian p. Prostate
q. Skin
6. Some common reasons for cancer: -

i. Modern lifestyle of fast-food, gadgets, stagnant life, pollution & pesticides can cause
cancer [3].
ii. Consuming water contaminated with arsenic [4-7]
iii. Due to consumption of alcohol [8-12], drugs [13-14], tobacco [15-16].
iv. Diet high on acidic or junk foods like candies, chips, colas, sweets etc. [3, 17].
v. Mobile phone radiation can cause cancer [3, 18-23] Spending time in electromagnetic
frequency zones like Wi-Fi [24-28] or radioactive zones like X-ray labs [29-44] & also due to
expose to radio-active materials like atomic energy or nuclear energy [45-49], etc.
vi. Exposure to mosquito & cockroach repellents gases [50] or formaldehyde gas by those
that work in formaldehyde production industry or in garment industry [51-58]
vii. Defect to DNA due to several reasons like pollution or stress as both pollution &
stress can cause DNA mutation [3, 59-60].
viii. Living in lack of oxygenated environment or not getting fresh air to breathe daily can
adversely affect normal cells & eventually immunity & cancer cells proliferate [61-62].
ix. Consuming foods high on herbicides, insecticides, pesticides [63] & hormones [64] &
urea & melamine in milk [65-74]. Urea is an enzyme that’s cancer causing as it splits
DNA & DNA split can cause DNA mutation & DNA mutation can cause cancer.
x. Carrying lifestyle disorders like poor sleep pattern, constipation, cholesterol,
diabetes, hypertension, depression etc. Chronic constipation is common in today’s
time due to lack sleep & lack of fibre in food as most of the people eat outside or
packed or junk foods & it does not contain enough fibre & this causes constipation &
chronic constipation has increased colorectal cancer cases [75].
xi. Living stressful life due to competitive profession or family member’s expectations or
carrying adverse feelings for others or carrying some trauma or suffering due to
psychosomatic disorders or being short-tempered & living an unhappy or miserable
life in such people’s body emotions get trapped in some parts of body & these
trapped emotions affect cells & can cause DNA split resulting into DNA mutation [60] &
eventually cancer. Due to stress body releases lot more hydro-chloric acid than
normal. When body’s functioning is normal, body is able to secrete enough
prostaglandin to protect stomach lining from hydro-chloric acid. However when
functioning is weak body fails to produce enough prostaglandin to protect stomach
lining & during those phases excess hydro-chloric acid affects stomach’s lining &
eventually causes ulceration. Ulcers at times can transform to cancer due to body’s
weakness in healing it or when body’s immunity being low or during old age.
xii. Heating food in micro-wave oven can cancer too as food contains water molecules &
micro-wave oven quickly makes food warm. Due to quick change in temperature
gradient of food, the food’s DNA suffers mutation especially in case of non-vegetarian
food & when such food is consumed to some extent can cause cancer [76 -78].
xiii. Some viruses like human-papilloma virus can also cause cancer [79].
xiv. Hair colours or hair dyes are linked to breast cancer [80].
xv. Living in the vicinity of mobile phone towers can cause cancer [81-82].
xvi. Some inks are carcinogenic thus body tattoos performed with those inks if gets
absorbed in blood can cause cancer [83].
xvii. Fluorides present in water if consumed can increase risk for cancer [84-86]. Majority of
toothpastes contains fluoride. Due to the modern professional demands & a lot of
things requiring our attention & schedule being hectic a lot of people in today’s era a
do not spend much time to rinse their mouth with water properly after using
toothpastes. If daily some quantity of fluoride remains in mouth & gets absorbed in
body then after some years it can cause cancer [84-86]. As per some studies Triclosan
found in toothpastes might cause colonic inflammation & promote colon cancer [87].

Some symptoms of cancer [88]: -

i. A sore that does not heal

ii. Change in bowel or bladder habits
iii. Indigestion or difficulty in swallowing
iv. Nagging cough or hoarseness
v. Obvious change in a wart or mole
vi. Pain in the bones & joints accompanied with fewer
vii. Persistent fatigue & unusual weight loss
viii. Persistent headache, dizziness, nausea or disturbed vision
ix. Thickening or lump in breast, testicles or elsewhere
x. Unusual bleeding or discharge

7. Some treatments available for cancer currently: -

I. Surgery: - This is performed when cancer is at 1st stage or when cancer cells have not
spread to more than 1 organ. In this procedure cancer cells or the part where cancer
has occurred gets eradicated. The shortcoming of this procedure is that it can only
be performed when cancer diagnosis happens at an early stage. Another
shortcoming is that surgeon should be an expert as while performing surgery there’s
a probability of cancer cells to spread to other organs & cancer could recidivate.

II. Radiation: - In this procedure cancer cells are annihilated or burnt by rays. The
shortcoming of this procedure is that when rays are emitted to rescind cancer cells it
even destroys non-cancerous cells as radiation cannot distinguish between normal
cells & cancerous cells.

III. Chemo-therapy: - ‘Chemo’ comes from the word chemical. In this chemicals are
used to kill cancer cells. Chemo-therapy has saved lives of many especially the young
ones or young adults. However we must understand that that cancer is lethal so the
chemicals used to destroy cancer unless more lethal than cancer won’t destroy
cancer. So in chemo-therapy an oncologist after understanding the type of cancer a
person suffers from after biopsy, PET-CT- scan etc. prescribes particular chemo-
therapeutic drugs & certain chemicals used in chemo-therapy are carcinogenic & in
some chemo-therapy drugs word ‘poison’ is mentioned. In some cases mistakenly
oncologist prescribes incorrect combination of chemo drugs & person ends up
suffering more. Thus it is better to take a 2nd opinion from another oncologist about
the drugs prescribed before chemo-therapy gets started.

The short-coming of chemo-therapy is similar to radiation therapy. Chemicals

transfused into body to kill cancer cells cannot distinguish between normal cells &
cancer cells & eventually like radiation therapy chemo therapy destroys normal &
cancerous cells both. As per studies chemotherapy could spread cancer cells & lead
to more advanced tumours [89]. The recovery rate due to chemo-therapy is too low &
more than 50% people especially those that are senior-citizens die not due to cancer
but due to chemotherapy [90].

Chemo-therapy reduces immunity & due to it cancer patients undergoing it easily

infect cold, cough, fever etc. Also due to poor immunity body’s homeostasis
mechanism does not function smoothly & when it does not body’s healing strength
diminishes due to which body fails to create new cells at the normal rate & due to it
cancer patients taking chemo-therapy remain weak.

You may wonder why oncologists go for chemo-therapy despite its side effects being
so many. It is because cancer is fatal & when a person is about to die, something
needs to be done & we humans have a notion that it is better to do something
rather than nothing, also to avoid facing guilt of not doing anything or what society
will think if we won’t treat? Thus due to lack of awareness about other protective or
healing practices chemo-therapy gets okayed by family members & cancer patients.

With my experience after interacting with many family members of those that have
took care of cancer patients I found that it is better to discuss with more than 1
oncologist on how long a person could survive after chemo-therapy gets performed.
Because I believe that a person must survive for at least 4 years or more after
chemo-therapy as it is an expensive technique & lots of efforts is required by family
members. Many families become poor due to cancer, many people selloff their
vehicle or land or both for their treatment. So after discussions with oncologists if
the conclusion is that despite chemo-therapy a person won’t survive for more than 1
year then it is senseless to have chemo-therapy because even with Ayurvedic
palliative care & with naturopathy a person with 4th stage cancer can survive for
around 1 year or more with less discomfort & won’t have to suffer the physical &
psychological pain of chemo-therapy & its side-effects & won’t end up wasting a lot
of money & time in hospital.

Chemo-therapy is too complicated & its side effects are huge thus oncologists &
other doctors prefer to not have chemo-therapy when they themselves suffer due to
cancer & prefer immune-therapy instead [91].

IV. Targeted therapy: - In this therapy drugs are used to destroy specific proteins that
let tumours to grow & spread. For example hormone therapy. It’s shortcoming is
that it does not destroy all types of cancer.

V. Immunotherapy or Immuno-Oncology: - Ímmuno’ comes from the word immunity.

Cancer is an auto-immune disease. Due to failure of immunity cancer cells do not get
destroyed when necessary. Immunotherapy works on correcting the failed immune
surveillance & enabling body’s immune system to recognise & kill cancer cells. Thus
in this therapy, immunity that is not functioning as normal is made to function as
required so that it can stop or slow the growth of cancer cells & even destroy them
without causing harm to normal cells or Normal antibodies bind to external
pathogens, but the modified immunotherapy antibodies bind to the tumour antigens
marking & identify cancer cells for the immune system to inhibit or kill. Thus this is
better than the above mentioned therapies.

Immunotherapy is generally a personalised & customised or tailored therapy. In this

a cancer patient’s blood is extracted & monocytes are then extracted from blood.
The monocytes are then cultured & dendritic cells are created to fight against the
cancer cells as per the cancer’s protein & then that cultured dendrites are injected in
the body. In this way a cancer patient’s immune system is artificially revived. This can
be performed simultaneously with other cancer therapies to accelerate recovery.

As only a few doctors globally have an expertise of this therapy & as its syllabus is
not taught during medical courses this makes this therapy expensive than
chemotherapy nonetheless there are some centres in India like ‘Denvax’[108] that are
economical than the cost of its treatment in most of the Western nations. The
biggest advantage of immunotherapy over other therapies is that the probability of
cancer to relapse is low as this therapy boosts immune system to recognise,
remember & destroy cancer cells whereas in other therapies despite cancer cells
getting destroyed if immune system won’t recognise & remember the cancer cells
that had caused cancer then there’s a possibility of those cancer cells can resurface.
Other advantages of immunotherapy over other therapies is that its side-effects like
diarrhoea, nausea, vomit, hair loss, darkening skin, darkening nails etc. is relatively
lower than other therapies.
VI. Curing tumours using berries: - Australian scientists have destroyed cancerous
tumours using a drug developed from the seeds of a berry found in the Australian
rainforest. After an eight-year study, researchers have discovered that Blushwood
berries — found in the rain forests of Far North Queensland — contain a compound
that might be able to destroy head & neck tumours, as well as melanoma. The berry,
the fruit of a tree called Fountain’s blushwood (Fontainea picrosperma), is found
only in select locations in the rainforests that border the North-Eastern coast of
Queensland. A company called Qbiotics isolated a compound from the seeds called
EBC-46, which, when injected directly into melanoma models & other cancers in
animals, eliminated most of the tumours, however EBC-46 does not appear to work
on metastatic tumours [102-104].

VII. Curing cancer with the help of cows: - Prabhav Hem Kamdhenu GiriVihar Trust a
unique hospital running entirely on donations of Jain business families in Valsad in
Gujarat uses cows to treat cancer patients. The medicine is called “panchgavya”
prepared using 5 substances obtained from cows (milk, urine, dung, curd & ghee). A
senior staff member from Sheth RM Dhariwal Cancer Hospital explains that ‘Cancer
cells do not multiply because panchgavya is an eco-friendly substance. It aids flush
out the cancerous toxins through motions.’ The cost of treatment is too economical
too. Daily walks, healthy vegetarian breakfast, lunch & dinner along with spiritual
discourse or meditation are part of the patient’s routine [105-107]. Some patients have
recovered due to this treatment [106,107].

VIII. Gene therapy: - Genes are made of DNA. Genes are coded commands that tell cells
how to produce proteins & proteins are the molecules that control cells. In this
therapy genes are used to stop the cancerous cells from multiplying & genes are sed
to repair damaged genes. However the most difficult part of this treatment is getting
genes into cancer cells.

IX. Stem cell therapy: - As of now this therapy is not used directly to treat cancer but
induced with radiation therapy or chemotherapy to help cancer patients recover
their ability to produce stem cells. It aids to restore blood forming stem-cells as due
to chemotherapy & radiation therapy cell damage happens.
Part II Preventing cancer
The best way to deal with cancer is by preventing it. Unless people follow a healthy lifestyle
it is likely that cancer could become too common like cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes,
etc. Thus we all must become heedful as cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension can be lived
with for years but with cancer it is impossible unless cancer is benign.

It is best when anyone recovers from cancer through any of the above mentioned therapies
or Ayurveda however once a person suffers due to cancer & recovers must always remain
vigilant as there is a possibility of cancer to relapse or reoccur in future.

Below mentioned are some points inspired by some Nobel Prize awardees for their research
findings on cancer

1. Augmenting oxygen quantity in body: - Inspired from Nobel Prize Awardee 1931,
Otto Warburg that rogue or cancer cells unlike normal cells do not need oxygen for
survival & growth [2] .Thus oxygen level in blood must be optimum for the proper
growth & development of normal cells as cancer cells thwart normal cells. When
oxygen level in blood is optimum the constituents of blood like monocytes healthily
perform their role of ingestion of bacteria or cancer cells. Normal cells require
oxygen for prime performance & growth & when normal cells function normally
body’s autophagy mechanism functions whenever necessary thus induces
destruction of cancer cells whenever necessary. Thus daily those activities must be
performed that increases oxygen consumption in body like Pranayam (deep
breathing exercises) or Yoga or Tai-Chi or Pilates or functional fitness or cross fitness
or cardio or calisthenics or dance any other form of fitness. If these are performed
under normal morning sunlight in a garden then it enhances consumption of oxygen.

2. Augmenting nitric-oxide content in body: - Inspired from 1998 Nobel Prize

Awardees Robert F. Furchgott, Louis J. Ignarro, Ferid Murad [92], as per their studies it
was found that nitric oxide can encumber growth of cancer cells. So it is essential to
consume foods that increase nitric oxide in body like green leafy vegetables e.g.
arugula, broccoli, cilantro, kale, other ones like beet-root, rhubarb; citrus fruits e.g.
lemon, lime, oranges, mandarin, tangerine, tangelo; other fruits like pomegranates,
watermelons, herbs like spirulina & spice like garlic.

The best way to consume garlic is in the morning 15 minutes before taking breakfast.
Take 5 cloves of garlic, discard its skin & chew one by one & let its juice get mixed in
saliva. When garlic’s compound allicin mixes with saliva & enters body it creates
more nitric oxide.

Another recipe to get abundant nitric-oxide is by using wheatgrass, lemon & garlic.
Prepare 1 glass fresh wheatgrass juice & add ½ lemon juice & juice from 5 garlic
cloves. This can be taken ½ hour before breakfast & ½ hour before dinner. For those
suffering from cancer ½ glass of this juice can be consumed every 2 hours. This
recipe contains most of the essential minerals & vitamins thus can enhance
functioning of glands & organs & keeps body healthy.

3. Keeping autophagy’s mechanism sound by fasting: - Inspired from 2016 Nobel prize
winner Japanese cell biologist Yoshinori Ohsumi’s research on ‘’how cells recycle &
renew their content by a process called macroautophagy’’: -

Unlike other cellular degradation machineries, autophagy removes long-lived

proteins, large macro-molecular complexes and organelles that have become
obsolete or damaged. Autophagy mediates the digestion and recycling of non-
essential parts of the cell during starvation and participates in a variety of
physiological processes where cellular components must be removed to leave space
for new ones. In addition, autophagy is a key cellular process capable of clearing
invading microorganisms and toxic protein aggregates, and therefore plays an
important role during infection, in ageing and in the pathogenesis of many human
diseases [1].

Nutrients & hormones influence autophagy [93]; amino acid deprivation induced, &
insulin-stimulation suppressed [94] autophagy in mammalian tissues. A small
molecule, 3-methyladenine, was shown to inhibit autophagy [95].

Autophagy gets activated in response to starvation or stress. In autophagy body

breaks down & consumes its reserves. During this process it tracks useless
components in body & aids in elimination of pathogens & engulfs apoptotic cells.
Cancer cells are particularly vulnerable to metabolic stress. A common cellular
response to metabolic stress is cell death by apoptosis & in cancer cells in particular
this apoptosis is crucial for suppressing tumorigenesis. Cancer cells require glucose
for their unrestrained cellular growth due to starvation or metabolic stress their
growth gets exacerbated thus due to reduction in access to glucose due to
autophagy their recycling happens.

The capacity of autophagy to eliminate invading microorganisms, a phenomenon

called xenophagy, underlies its key role in the activation of immune responses & the
control of infectious diseases [96, 97].

Those that have recovered from cancer or are susceptible to cancer due to family
history or stay near mobile phone tower or have consumed adulterated food &
water for long or have lifestyle disorders, etc. must induce autophagy.
So in this practice daily 12 hour fasting & weekly 1 day fast benefits body to utilise
body’s reserve energy & breakdown & excrete the unrequired components. So if you
take breakfast early in the morning at 8 am then it must be ensured to try to have a
light dinner before 8 pm so that there will be a 12 hour gap between meals.

In week 1 day fast on the day of fast only once light meal preferably semi-solid meal
must be consumed that may constitute of anything mentioned amongst these like
almonds & apricots soaked in water for 12 hours, dates, sun-flower seeds, water-
melon seeds, musk-melon seeds, hemp seeds, flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame
seeds, salads & boiled lentils. Those that dislike lentils may consume millets instead
or can consume millets with lentils like pearl millet, finger millet, barnyard millet,
foxtail millet, kodo millet, etc. Quinoa or barley is also a healthy choice. On that very
day non-vegetarian food, milk products, junk or packed or processed foods must be
strictly avoided. We need to understand that cancer cells require glucose for growth
thus it is better to avoid foods high on glucose thus corn, rice, wheat, milk, meat
products & the products high with carbohydrates must be strictly avoided.

A lot of dieticians prescribe a 6 meal diet with a rationale to keep metabolic rate high
to aid weight loss. This may work for body-builders or boxers or wrestlers or some
sports personalities or models or actors or celebrities as they daily spend time
exercising & toning their body thus require constant energy. However due to
invasion of technology majority of humans have a sedentary lifestyle & do not do
physical activity throughout the day thus do not require to eat constantly & constant
eating burdens our body’s basic function as body performs 3 processes that are
assimilation, digestion & excretion. In assimilation body assimilates all the food, in
digestion food gets converted into substances that can be absorbed into the body, it
also stores the vital components & in excretion body discards the unwanted or waste
components. When we constantly eat throughout the day it disrupts the process of
assimilation & digestion & eventually body’s autophagy mechanism gets hibernated.
Also constantly makes body utilise most of the energy to churn food & it does not
focus on healing or eating the unwanted components.

As per Indian oncologist Dr. Jamal A Khan 50% people that suffer cancer suffer due to
unhealthy lifestyle habits thus below I’ve shared some techniques to enhance lifestyle that
can be practised by those that have recovered from cancer & even those that have a family
history of cancer & even normal humans to prevent this deadly disease to happen.
Healthy lifestyle: -

We all are aware that regular exercise for around half hour or more per day is good for
body’s fitness however some people that are obese find it difficult to exercise. Before a
person starts practising exercises or Yoga to shed extra calories must first understand body’s
mechanism & eat healthily as weight loss begins with eating the right food & discarding the
wrong ones as fitness constitutes of more than 70% diet & around 30% exercise or Yoga.

It starts with person’s psychological health & it needs to be made normal because many
people unknowingly carry emotional burdens or traumas. After making person’s psyche
normal then diet/nutrition has be personalised so that it suits the person & then exercises
or yoga or both will help that person.

Yoga or meditation helps to understand self mentally but we must also understand our
body’s physiology so that we can understand what type of food will suit us. Physiology can
understood in many ways but in a simple way we can say that bodies can be categorised
into 3 categories i.e. ectomorph mesomorph & endomorph[99].

An ectomorph body is generally lean & long, with difficulty building muscle such people
must prefer to have a diet rich in proteins (provided life is not sedentary otherwise it will
affect kidney) & a bit above normal fats & least carbohydrates[99].

Endomorph body is generally big, high body fat, often pear-shaped, with a high tendency to
store body fat. Such people must avoid foods high on carbohydrates like refined flour,
wheat, rice, packed, processed or junk foods, sweets, desserts, etc. Their diet must be rich
in proteins & normal fats as fats are essential for joint lubrication & normal brain
functioning [99].

Mesomorph body is a well-balanced body. Muscular & well-built, with a high metabolism &
responsive muscle cells, such people can have a balanced diet [99].

We must know that each one’s stomach size is that of his/her fist thus certain foods can be
consumed in accordance to fist’s size like rice or polenta, or lentils or millets, etc.

In today’s era life’s other denotation has become stress. Multi-tasking has become essential
as we are compelled to give attention to many things simultaneously. It leads to tension
always in mind & this tension also causes overeating or emotional eating. People eat despite
not being hungry. This disturbs body’s autophagy mechanism as explained above how it
helps to prevent expansion of cancer cells.

Since recent decades emotional stress due to psychosomatic illness or due to professional
or family pressure or stress due to pollution has affected our body’s cells & causes rapid
oxidation or DNA split. Thus we get to hear from dieticians & nutritionists to consume ample
of foods that are rich with anti-oxidants. However in today’s era most of the foods contain
too much of fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, etc. & these cause more damage
to cells by causing oxidation or DNA split [60] & thus to protect cells from emotional stress,
pollution & chemicals present in food body creates a fatty layer around cells & this fatty
layer increases as stress & poison present in food continue to be a part of life & eventually
person gets obese. Such people are unable to shed extra pounds from body just by
exercising or Yoga.

Cholesterol is a common problem in today’s time & when people get diagnosed with high
cholesterol level then their doctor prescribes them to consume cholesterol lowering drugs.
To some extent it is okay to consume them if cholesterol level is too high however we must
understand that consuming too many drugs stresses the liver as it is liver’s function to
produce cholesterol & drugs inhibit liver from doing it affects liver’s performance to do
other tasks like metabolism, discarding wastes, etc. & eventually body weight increases.

We need to understand that cholesterol is not bad & it is essential. The shine or glow that
we get on our face or skin is due to cholesterol. The cholesterol in our body gets converted
to cholecalciferol due to the influence of sunlight on our skin cells. Sunlight gets absorbed
by skin to produce Vitamin D from sunlight. Cholecalciferol is essential for metabolism of
calcium & phosphorous. So due to lack of cholecalciferol metabolism of calcium &
phosphorous in body does not happen at optimum level & eventually bones become brittle
as calcium & phosphorous are essential for bone health. Thus to enhance bone health &
increase metabolism or calcium & phosphorous liver produces more cholesterol so that due
to response of sunlight body will produce enough cholecalciferol. Since recent decades
people’s exposure to sunlight has reduced thus they do not get enough vitamin D & due to
lack of vitamin D cholesterol does not get converted into cholecalciferol & cholesterol levels
in body remain high. Thus an alternative to reduce cholesterol without drugs can be by
taking ample of sunlight preferable morning sunlight before 10 am as after 10 am in most of
the places sunlight is unbearable.

N.B. If cholesterol level is too high then cholesterol lowering drugs must not be stopped &
with cholesterol lowering drugs sunlight must be taken to reduce dosage & dependency of
cholesterol lowering drugs.
What body absorbs from what is eaten is more substantial than what gets eaten.
Unfortunately due to hectic lifestyle & multitasking people do not eat healthy foods & even
those lucky ones that eat healthy foods their body does not absorb the nutrients from the
food as most of them do not eat with concentration or happiness. Many eat too hurriedly &
only spend roughly 30 minutes daily to consume their 3 meals. When meals are consumed
in a hurry & without concentration or while consuming food people surf phone applications
or talk or watch television then body does not produce enough saliva to digest food &
eventually all the nutrients from food does not get absorbed. In many European nations
people follow good food eating habits for example in France on an average people spend
roughly 2.5 hours a day to eat all their meals thus most of the Europeans are healthier &
cancer is not prevalent in majority of European nations.

Lot of people consume water while consuming food & this very habit is wrong. Water must
be consumed 30 minutes before meals & 50 minutes after meals. Water instead of
consuming a lot (like 1 full glass) in one go must be consumed slowly in small quantities at
regular intervals. Consuming 1 full glass of water quickly disrupts body’s digestive process.

Cold water from refrigerator must never be consumed. Those that cannot do without cold
water may use an earthen pot instead to make water cool. Water should be of preferably
body’s temperature. Those that want to shed weight must consume warm water instead of
water of body temperature.

Applying coconut or olive oil on naval before going to sleep is beneficial as coconut or olive
oil both have nutritional benefits & get absorbed by the body & enhance lubrication thus
ease digestion.

Body’s nutrition absorption mechanism depends substantially on the functioning of its

organs. Just like vehicles or machines require cleansing for proper functioning similarly if we
cleanse some of our organs or if we regularly reinforce removal of toxic components from
our body as toxic components enter body due to poor food choices or pollution, etc. body is
able to absorb nutrients properly.

So we must regularly cleanse skin, lungs, kidney, gall-bladder, liver & colon (in this written
order)

i. Skin: - Skin cleansing can happen by exercise or workout or dance as physical

activities releases lot of sweat & then scrubbing body while bathing.

ii. Lungs: - Its function is to provide oxygen to blood & remove carbon-dioxide. It can be
cleansed by deep breathing fresh air or performing Pranayam (deep breathing
exercises), by taking steam of eucalyptus & peppermint oil mixed in water. This
steam must be taken once in the morning & once in the evening. On the very day of
taking steam all milk & meat products & those high on glucose must be avoided &
only foods that are good for lungs must be consumed like apples, carrots, etc. Those
that dislike to eat raw carrots raw can have steamed carrots or carrot soup instead
but carrot-cakes or carrot halva must be avoided as they are sweet & these items do
not contain much of goodness of carrots. Carrot soup must be prepared using
coconut oil as coconut oil is anti-microbial & it loosens mucus & black pepper must
be put in it. Instead of water green tea prepared using cardamom, cinnamon, black-
pepper, ginger must be consumed. This enhances functioning of lungs. A Yogic
technique named Jal-neeti too can be performed in the day to enhance air flow to
lungs. This can be done once a week. When lungs function at their optimum
standard it aids proper inhalation of air & exhalation of carbon-dioxide.

iii. Kidney: - Kidney’s function is to excrete wastes from blood through urination. Daily
consuming 1 tablespoon of apple-cider vinegar with 1 glass of lemon juice early in
the morning half hour before breakfast is good for kidneys. Basil leaves + Coriander +
Mint leaves + Parsley can be mixed in a blender or a juicer & its juice must be
consumed 2 to 3 times a day on the very day it is intended to detox kidney. Kidney
detox can be performed once in 2 weeks & on that very day foods good for kidney
like apples, blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, strawberries, cherries, etc. can be
consumed as these fruits are good for kidney function.

iv. Gall-bladder: - It is a muscular sac attached to the liver. It stores bile. On any holiday
Epsom salt + Lemon juice to be consumed in the morning & nothing must be
consumed except water. Later after 3 hours Epsom salt with olive oil to be consumed
& again after 3 hours again Epsom salt with olive oil must be consumed. Relaxation
should be done on bed ensuring right side of body facing bed so that gall-bladder
gets stimulated. This will aid to excrete the waste accumulated in gall-bladder.

v. Liver: - Liver has multiple functions it secretes bile, functions in metabolism of

carbohydrates, fat, proteins; synthesizes substances involved in the clotting of the
blood; synthesises vitamin A; detoxifies poisonous substances & breaks down worn-
out erythrocytes. In short liver metabolises & discards the unwanted components.
When liver gets overburden due to overeating or consuming too much of junk foods
or packed foods or alcohol it utilises more energy & time to metabolise & is unable
to regularly discard unwanted components, create bile, synthesise vitamin. Thus
unwanted components get accumulated. Thus it is essential to give liver break by
fasting weekly or at least twice a month or on holidays consuming only raw fruits like
avocados, blueberries, cranberries, grapes, grapefruits, oranges, mandarin, papaya,
pine-apples, etc & salads made with beetroot, carrots, onions, radish, coriander,
parsley. Consuming 3 to 5 glasses of ginger lemon juice also aids liver cleansing.
vi. Colon: - It is a part of the large intestine between the caecum & the rectum. Food
that gets assimilated in intestine, food’s moisture is extracted by colon before it gets
excreted. Due to improper functioning of colon bloating, flatulence happens. Due to
bloating, flatulence, etc. colon cannot function at its optimum level. Consuming only
raw foods especially fruits & salads that are rich in fibre a week once in every month
aids to cleanse colon. Consuming ginger lemon juice also aids. Those that suffer due
to constipation must strictly avoid packed foods or junk foods as it contains least
fibre. Consuming castor-oil mixed in mild warm water before sleeping also aids in
dealing with constipation.

Those that find the above cleansing procedure difficult to practise on their own may consult
an Ayurvedic practitioner. In Ayurveda there’s a procedure named enema in which people
get admitted in hospital for a week & in that very week medication (cathartic or purgative) is
injected in their rectum & this aids in frequent passing of stool 4 to 5 times a day. This
procedure aids to discard waste from body. Whilst only food prepared in hospital like boiled
lentils or boiled vegetables, salads person gets to consume.

Blood’s PH is alkaline. Thus the more we consume alkaline foods it will be better for blood &
eventually constituents in blood like Red-blood cells & White-blood cells will perform their
function at their optimum level & as we know that it is the white blood cells that safeguard
from cancer by destroying them. Thus it is better to consume foods that are alkaline & avoid
foods that are acidic. Most of the fried, junk, packed, processed, refined foods, meat &
desserts are highly acidic. Most of the fruits & raw items eaten for salads are alkaline.

I used to work in a factory & at times due to high demand for production we used to run
machines continuously for roughly 11 hours. When production requirement used to be
normal we used to run machines for 4.5 hours & then give break for 1 hour & then again
used to run machine for 3.5 hours. It was noticed that when machines ran continuously for
11 hours it required more maintenance & the belts of machines got torn too often. On the
other hand when machines were given break for 1 hour it required less maintenance & belts
lasted long. Our body is similar to a machine & many studies have shown that afternoon nap
for a few minutes helps body’s healing or repair mechanism & even weight loss. Thus for
those if it is possible to have afternoon nap after lunch must have it [60, 100].

Significance of spices: - Spices have a healing effect on body. Thus foods especially sauce or
gravy or dal or chutney must contain these spices

Asafoetida, Black pepper powder, Cardamom, Carom seeds (Bishop weed), Cinnamon
powder, Cloves, Coriander powder, Cumin seeds, Fennel seeds powder, Fenugreek powder,
Garlic paste, dry Ginger powder, Mustard paste, Oregano leaves, Poppy seeds, Sesame
seeds, Turmeric powder, Thyme leaves, Rosemary leaves.
Lot of people cook onions & tomatoes however it is better to consume them raw.

Those men above 50 years of age must consume raw tomatoes before meals to protect self
from prostate cancer.

Some incorrect practices people practise globally

1. Mixing lemon juice in warm water & adding 1 tablespoon of honey to it & having it
daily before breakfast to shed weight. This is not a right practise & makes body acidic
& eventually body absorbs calcium from bones to keep body alkaline. Consuming
such a drink daily before breakfast can make bones brittle. Nevertheless lemon juice
with water at normal temperature can be consumed 30 minutes before breakfast.

2. Starting day with tea or tea after meals. A lot of people have a habit of consuming
tea as the very 1st item. Some are addicted to tea & without consuming it in the
morning they are unable to expel their bowel waste. This on a long run is harmful as
tea leaves contain flavonoids & milk contains casein. Flavonoids when gets mixed
with casein affects liver & eventually liver’s performance reduces & metabolism
reduces. An alternative option is to consume herbal tea or green tea instead.

3. Going for a walk after dinner or after meals is good for weight loss. This is a good
practise for those that consume a balanced meal & do not eat beyond 250 grams
serving at once. But majority of us consume more than 250 grams of meal at once &
when it happens body requires a lot of blood in the stomach area to digest the food.
Walking after meals increases blood flow towards legs & eventually reduces
digestion capacity. Thus it is better to practise Vajrasan after meals & small walk or
body movement can be practised after 30 minutes after meals. Keeping a warm
water bag on stomach after meals also aids digestion. An alternative option for those
that want to shed calories may perform rigorous exercise or climb stairs or go for a
brisk walk for a while 30 minutes before consuming meals or dinner. This ups body
heat in & enhances food absorption.

4. Having cold deserts like gelato or ice-cream or kulfi or panna-cotta or sorbet or

custard after meals is not a good habit as these items are cold & after meals enter
body, body imbibes most of the blood from all parts of the body & digestive fluids
towards stomach & increases heat for digestion but when cold deserts are put in
body then it disrupts digestion process.

5. In India a popular dessert recipe is curd-vada also known as ‘dahi-vada’. It is

prepared using Urad dal & kept in curd. Generally dals are rich in proteins & do not
easily get digested in body. Urad dal is heavy on stomach & gets too long to get
digested. When this dal is used to prepare vadas & then dipped in curd it takes too
long for the body to metabolise it. Thus having it after meals is not a good for health.

6. Improper mixing of ingredients while preparation of white sauce, which is prepared

using white onions, milk, flour, etc. Onions & milk when get mixed can cause skin
allergies. Some people while preparing sea-foods mix milk in it; this too can also
cause skin allergies.

During my many visits to Tata Memorial hospital I encountered many patients that
wondered why cancer developed in their body despite never consuming alcohol, tobacco,
non-vegetarian foods & practising exercises, yoga daily & also not being less than 45 years
of age & I’ve also wondered why many suffer due to cancer in Punjab despite majority in
Punjab being vegetarians & follow healthy practises like exercise, body building & consume
nutritious food as Punjab does well in agriculture produce.

I got its understanding from a great Indian oncologist Dr. Jamal A Khan that specialises in
immunotherapy.

Unknowingly people consume fungus like fusarium, etc. ‘Aflatoxin’ it is a potent carcinogen
from the fungus Aspergillus gets consumed by many. Peanuts, walnuts [101], wheat, corn,
onion, garlic, etc can contain fungus. Thus while consuming any of these mentioned
products we must remain vigilant. Wheat flour & corn flour are generally produced in
factories can contain fungus if wheat & corn are not checked & the bad ones get discarded
before producing flour. Peanut when left for long acquires moisture & due to it fungus
grows on it. Peanut butter a commonly consumed product globally is also produced on a
commercial scale in factories. If factories won’t ensure to discard the peanut that contains
aflatoxin to increase production than such peanut butter can contain this toxin too. Similarly
groundnuts/peanuts are used for cooking oil production too & when factories won’t discard
the aflatoxin containing groundnuts/peanuts & use even such groundnuts/peanuts for
increasing production then such oil can harm health. Some onions, garlic have a blackish
taint on them. In factories onions & garlic are used to produce onion garlic paste. If to
increase production companies won’t discard the fungus containing onions, garlic then such
paste too can contain this toxin.

We purchase corn, peanuts, walnuts, onions, garlic & consume it at home. Those corns,
peanuts, walnuts, garlic, onions that do not appear normal or have blackish powder on it
can be deduced to contain fungus. Thus those must be discarded. In case of onion outer skin
of onion may contain blackish taint thus only the outer skin or outer layer has to be
discarded & the remaining part can be used. In case of garlic if entire part is not affected &
only a few cloves are affected then only those cloves can be discarded.
We must remain highly watchful while using these foods items & understand that boiling or
cooking does not destroy these fungus or toxins.

Avoiding anti-biotic drugs till it is necessary: -

In many nations anti-biotic drugs are sold over the pharmacy counter & can be purchased
without doctor’s prescription. Many people have a high demanding job & take advantage of
easy availability of anti-biotic drugs. Whenever they get a feeling of acquiring or acquire
fewer or cough, cold, etc. they consume antibiotic drugs to prevent fewer or cough or cold
from controlling them to avoid missing office. This practise is not good as antibiotics kill
body’s micro-biota. Micro-biota aids in proper digestion of foods. Those that destroy body’s
micro-biota with anti-biotic drugs suffer due to diarrhoea. It is known as anti-biotic induced
diarrhoea. Micro-biota is thus vital; it even consumes some of the undigested or
unabsorbed items in body. Due to over consumption of anti-biotic drugs a very small
percentage of bacteria that does not die produce lot of anti-biotic resistant drugs. Also not
letting body’s immunity fight cold, cough or fever makes immunity quiescent. It is not bad to
suffer due to cough or cold of fever around 3 times per year. This keeps immunity dynamic.
Those that are compelled to consume anti-biotic drugs may include pro-biotic drinks like
curd or yoghurt in their diet as anti-biotic drugs destroy good bacteria too & pro-biotic
drinks like curd or yoghurt will add good bacteria to body.
Part III Care if it happens
Generally if illness remains for long & after consuming medicines to treat illness, recovery
does not happen & despite all basic blood, urine, etc. tests if doctors fail to comprehend
cause of illness then ask patient to go for biopsy or PET-CT scan.

If in biopsy cancer gets revealed then not to worry. The best in such situation is to consider
the extremes & accept it & become fearless rather than feeling hopeless & hapless. When
people worry about problems & remain in fear their mind keeps wavering between
problems, fear & resolution. In such scenarios it is too difficult to figure the best solutions.
Thus it is better to accept the worst as it helps to utilise all capabilities to focus on all the
available solutions & choose them intelligently. A fearful mind reduces confidence & person
is likely to end up taking wrong decisions.

Whatever available therapies are mentioned can be thought about keeping the budget in
mind because a lot of people become too poor due to loans & selling off vehicles or land or
both while saving life of patient & unfortunately life & money both gets lost within a year.

If cancer is at initial stage then it is better to get it removed using surgery or annihilated
using radiation. After successful surgery or radiation patient can have immunotherapy
named ‘Dendritic cell therapy’ in India by an Indian doctor Jamal A Khan[108] or any other
immunotherapy to boost immunity so that the possibility of cancer relapse will become
bleak. If person cannot have immunotherapy for various reasons like financial reasons, etc.
then can take help of Ayurveda to boost immunity to prevent recurrence of cancer.

Those that cannot afford surgery or radiation to get rid of cancer in 1 st or 2nd stage can go
for Ayurveda. In Ayurveda too cancer gets treated if it gets detected in early stage. As per
late great Ayurveda expert 2 cup of ‘cow urine’ + few tablespoon of ‘turmeric’ if mixed &
boiled with Punarnava (an ayurvedic medicine) & reduced to 1 cup & if this gets consumed
daily for few months then cancer gets cured.

Other Ayurvedic treatments are also available that can be performed as per patient’s
condition & cancer type as per the guidance of an Ayurvedic doctor.

Some naturopathy supplements that reduce the rate of cancer spread are

1. Aloe vera juice 2. Amrita/Giloy/Guduchi juice

3. Changeri juice 4. Gomutra-Ark
5. Gooseberry/Amla juice 6. Neem juice
7. Tulsi-Ark 8. Wheat-grass juice

If patient’s age is lesser than 60 years & has sound physicality & cancer has reached stage 3
or 4 then it is next to impossible to treat cancer using surgery or radiation. In such cases
oncologists suggest chemotherapy. If patient understands the side effects & expenses of
chemotherapy then can have it also must get assurance from oncologist that after
chemotherapy person can survive for more than 3 to 4 years otherwise it is better to get
Ayurveda treatment. In majority of cases patients first take chemotherapy session & when
they realise that it will not suit them due to many side effects then they go for Ayurveda
treatment however once a chemo drugs enter body in majority of cases Ayurveda treatment
does not do any good to patient & person ends up wasting time & money. Nevertheless
Ayurveda suits before chemotherapy & can prolong person’s life & can even cure.

In case cancer patient’s age is over 60 years & cancer has reached stage 3rd or 4th stage then
it is better to not go for chemotherapy unless doctor guarantees that with chemotherapy
longevity will increase more than 1 year. After 60 years of age person’s body’s repair &
healing mechanism reduces & thus cells do not regenerate & patient finds it too difficult to
tolerate the after effects of chemotherapy. In such cases Ayurveda can be a better option.

If patient takes chemotherapy then can go through certain side-effects as I’ve dealt with a
cancer patient at my residence I share my experience on what I & my mother did to help the
patient.

i. Acidity, Acid-reflux, Bloating, Gas: -

a. Activated charcoal tablets or charcoal lemon juice reduces or stops gas,
indigestion, stomach discomfort.
b. Bishop’s weed (Carom seeds) boiled in water can be consumed.
c. Omeprazole capsules or antacid liquids can be consumed.
d. Pavanmuktasana or Halasana if possible can be performed.
e. Peppermint or mint leaves can be consumed.

ii. Constipation: -
a. Dried black grapes & dried figs soaked in water for 12 hours if consumed
before sleep enhances sleep & aids excretion.
b. Dried senna leaves can be consumed with warm water before sleep.
c. Flaxseeds can be powdered & can be consumed before sleep.
d. Psyllium husk can be consumed with milk before sleep.
e. Laxative & Purgative tablets can be given.

iii. Diarrhoea: -
a. Avoid all food or fruit items like pineapple, papaya, etc. that are rich in fibre.
b. Avoid tea, coffee.
c. Due to diarrhoea body loses a lot of water thus lots of water or fruit juices or
milk or curd must be consumed.
d. Psyllium husk if mixed with curd, bananas & jiggery powder reduce or stop
diarrhoea.
e. Anti-diarrhoeal drugs can be provided.
iv. Difficulty to chew: -
1. Barley porridge or some 2. Boiled egg yolk
other porridge
3. Boiled sweet potatoes 4. Dairy products
5. Fish fillet (bones discarded) 6. Fruit salad
7. Jellies (Sugarless) 8. Pudding (Sugarless)
9. Salads 10. Sprouted items
11. Soup 12. Boiled yam

v. Dry mouth: -
a. Balm for dry lips
b. Chew chewing gum
c. Using Soda-Bicarbonate to gargle or putting soda-bicarbonate on cotton &
cleaning tongue with it.
d. Wheatgrass juice + lemon refrigerated to convert it into ice-cubes & those
ice-cubes kept in mouth.

vi. Vomit: -
a. Anti-emetics like Gravol tablets can be given half hour before meals.
b. Ginger-lemon juice must be consumed.
c. As all medicines are processed in liver & in case cancer reaches liver then it
gets difficult for liver to function properly & process medicines thus despite
anti-emetic medicines person’s vomit does not stop. In such cases anti-
emetic injection can be given.

vii. Cannot eat: -

a. Minerals & vitamin drip can be provided. For some reasons if it is not possible
to provide drip then Minerals & Vitamin Patch can be applied on skin.

Due to the above mentioned side effects of chemotherapy patient finds it too difficult to
consume food or fears to consume food in such cases preferably food served should be
fresh & aromatic. If it is possible then food should be served near a window that lets fresh
air & sunlight enter to enhance the ambiance. Also it should be ensured that food contains
lots of ginger & fennel.

Due to chemotherapy haemoglobin & platelets levels reduce

So cleaned Papaya leaves can be boiled in water & reduced to half & that water can be
consumed 20 to 200 ml per day.

Pomegranate juice, Beet-root juice, Giloy or Amrita juice increase haemoglobin & platelet
count.

It should be ensured that food is savoury & not salty, spicy & sugary.
Due to too many medicines body’s digestive system gets weak thus in such cases it is better
to consume the foods that gets digested easily & are alkaline in nature. Below are a few
food items that are light on stomach.

1. Apricot 2. Artichoke 3. Asparagus

4. Avocados 5. Brussels sprouts 6. Bottle guard
7. Cauliflower 8. Cranberry 9. Drumsticks
10. Flaxseeds 11. Guava 12. Garlic
13. Grapes 14. Holy basil 15. Kale
16. Lemon or lime 17. Oranges 18. Pro-biotic drinks
19. Pumpkin 20. Radish 21. Snake guard
22. Sprouted items 23. Sweet lime 24. Tomatoes
25. Turnip 26. Wheatgrass 27. Zucchini

N.B. Those that suffer due to diabetes may avoid consuming any of the above mentioned
items that is sweet.

As mentioned cancer cells quickly grow due to glucose & do not require oxygen for
growth thus foods rich in carbohydrates like rice, wheat or wheat products or refined
flour products or bakery items or processed or junk foods should be avoided. Also foods
that are acidic in nature must be avoided. All dried fruits that end with nuts like
Brazilian-nuts, Cashew-nuts, Hazelnuts, Pine nuts, walnuts must be avoided.

Diet for cancer patients: -

1. Wheatgrass juice with half lemon squeezed in it in the morning.

2. After 1 hour milk with protein powder or almond milk
3. Breakfast: -After half an hour barley porridge or oatmeal or Foxtail millet or
Finger millet (Nachni) or Quinoa or carrot soup or egg whites.
4. Afternoon lunch: - Durum wheat Polenta (Khichdi) with curd & vegetable soup.
5. Evening: - Amla (Gooseberry) juice or Lemongrass tea or green tea.
6. Dinner: - Vegetable soup or Dal soup or Foxtail millet or Finger millet (Nachni)
roti or cooked vegetables
7. Almond milk mixed with dried figs & dried grapes.

Non-vegetarians prefer chicken or shallots or shrimp soup, however these are an acidic in
nature & acidic foods are not good thus their acidity needs to be reduced by adding
cauliflower puree or carrot puree or lots of apricot puree.

Cancer patients do not feel the urge to consume food due to loss of taste or all foods tasting
bland in such cases mint water should be given to them instead of plain water.

At times cancer patients find it too difficult to consume solid foods in such scenarios below
are certain recipes that can be served to them that gets digested easily.

It is always difficult for any near & dear one to see someone suffering due to cancer & in
such situation a simple prayer if recited with feeling can help to reduce stress or tension.

“GOD grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

The courage to change the things I can & the wisdom to know the difference.”
