THE EMAIL RESOURCE YOU NEED AT YOUR DESK-SIDE

The 20 Step Email

Checklist
Content
‣ Is your email content benefiting you, or your audience? How
are you adding value to your list?
‣ Do you have one clear call to action? If not, try focusing your
email on one key action you want your customer to take.
‣ Have you tested your email content for clipping? An easy way
to tell is if your email shows … or “show entire message,” the
code of your email is too large. Shorten it up or risk not being
able to measure your emails properly.

Testing
‣ Did you set up an A/B test to see what subject line or call to
action performs best?
‣ Do you understand when your customer opens emails? Is your
send-time optimized for the best customer experience?
‣ Gmail will add a big scary red ? next to emails they don’t believe
are being sent by the person who appears to have sent it. To fix,
make sure your sending address is authenticated.
‣ How does your email look on different email clients? Test to
make sure your images are rendering properly.
‣ How does your email look on mobile? Most emails are opened
on phones, so make sure you’re showing up well.

Subject Line
‣ Does your subject line accurately communicate what is in the
email?
‣ Try asking a question to increase your open rates!
‣ If your list isn’t stuffy or overly professional, try testing an emoji
against a non-emoji subject line.
‣ Are you using your preview text to support why your customer
should open?
‣ Does your email subject line or preview text include spam
trigger words? (Free, buy now, winner, no fees, etc.)

Copy
‣ Have you simplified your copy? Try using Hemmingway to make
sure you’re sending at a Grade 6-8 reading level.
‣ How will your email be received by your customer? Make sure
you’re not coming off desperate, salsey, or demanding— those
are conversion turn offs.
‣ How many times have you used all-caps? Shouting at your
customers isn’t best practice, and it could trigger spam!
‣ Did you keep the majority of your sentences short? Don’t make
your list work to understand your copy!

List
‣ Has your list heard from you lately? If you wait months to email
your people, they may forget why they signed up for your list.
Talk to your people often!
‣ Are you hiding your unsubscribe? Yikes. That may lead folks to
report abuse or marking your emails as spam. This is going to
damage your sender reputation and make it harder for you to
land in your customer’s inboxes.

Fun
‣ Inboxes are like noisy crowded bars, how are you building your
content to stand out?
‣ Do your emails have a memorable personality? Email is a
conversational tool, so talk to your customers with a brand tone
they’ll remember.
