Magnetic Particle Inspection Procedure
Doc. No MK/MT/007 Rev. 3 Page 4 of 8
1. SCOPE
This procedure details the requirements to be followed by PT. Megatek Konsindo NDT
personnel to perform Magnetic Particle Inspection of ferromagnetic materials for the
detection of open to surface and subsurface discontinuity on pipeline, piping and
structural joint. This procedure satisfies the minimum requirements of the codes &
standards and the project specifications cited in clause 2.
2. REFERENCE DOCUMENTS
The following codes, standards and Client specification are used for reference in the
preparation of this procedure.
API 1104 Welding of Pipeline and Related Facility
AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code
ASME VIII, Div. 1 Rules for Construction of Pressure Vessels
ASME IX Welding and Brazing Qualifications
ASME B31.3 Process Piping
ASME B31.8 Gas Transmission and Distribution Piping System
API 650 Welded Steel Tanks For Oil Storage
ASME V Article 7 Magnetic Particle Examination
ASME V SE-709 Standard Guide for Magnetic Particle Examination
MK/WP/001 Rev.4 PT. Megatek Konsindo written practice for the qualification and
certification of non destructive testing personnel.
3. PERSONNEL
All personnel directly involved with magnetic particle inspection will be qualified to one or
more of the following certification schemes and have been eye sight tested to
successfully read Jaeger J2 size letters at a distance of not less that 300 mm. Verified
copies of certification shall be provided at the Client request.
ASNT American Society for Non Destructive testing level II standard.
PCN Personnel Certification in NDT Level 2 standard.
4. EQUIPMENTS & CONSUMABLES
4.1. Equipment
The equipment used shall be PARKER B 310S 220 AC adjustable electromagnetic
Yokes or equivalent, capable of inducing adequate magnetic field in the material
under tested, accordance with ASTM E-709. During testing the path of the magnetic
field shall be maintained at right angles to the principles areas of the flaws being
sought.

The magnetizing equipment used shall be as specified in the technique sheet.
Prior examination, AC electromagnetic yoke will be subject to daily load test of 10 lb
steel calibration block with maximum pole spacing shall not exceed 300 mm.
Burmah Castrol shall be used for verification of sufficient flux magnetic field density.
4.2. Consumables
Consumables will be chosen from Magnaflux or equivalent product that specified as
follow:
- Magnetic ink = Magnaflux Particle 7 HF or equivalent.
- White Contrast Paint = Magnaflux White contrast WCP – 2 or equivalent.
- Cleaner = Magnaflux Solvent / Remover SKC-S or equivalent.
- Dry Powder = Magnaflux #8A or equivalent.
5. TEST PROCEDURE FOR WET & DRY METHOD
5.1 Testing Temperature
- Wet continues magnetization method must not exceed 1350F (570C).
- Dry powdered magnetization method must not exceed 6000F (3160C).
5.2 Surface Preparation
Prior to Magnetic Particle Inspection, it must be ensured that the surface to be
examined is free from oil, paint, grease, weld spatter, or other extraneous matter,
which could interfere the inspection process. If a contrast aid is required, the white
contrast paint shall be applied uniformly. Dry powdered magnetic particles will not
normally be used with a contrast aid.
5.3 Magnetizing Method (Continues Method)
The magnetic field will be applied using the test equipment mentioned in section 4
with articulated poles shall be used to ensure poles are placed flat onto the surface.
Apply a finely divided wet/dry magnetic particle on this magnetized surface. If no
indication is apparent, the direction of the magnetic field should be turned through
90 degrees and the application of inspection media repeated to ensure full
coverage of the test area.
At least two separate examinations shall be performed on each area. The
technician shall move to the next area by ensuring an adequate overlap with the
previous test area and the procedure repeated.
5.4 Examination and Interpretation
The material surface shall be examined under appropriate viewing condition in good
light conditions of intensity 500 lux or greater, and flaws will be indicated by a build
up of the magnetic particles. If any doubt exists over suspect indications, the
surface will be cleaned and re-inspected.

If an indication is confirmed as being a true indication, then it should be evaluated
against the acceptance criteria in paragraph 6.
6. ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA
The Acceptance Criteria shall be assessed as per section 9 of API 1104 or AWS D1.1
for structure & SIPL spec and codes.
