a) What does “MSDS” means? Lists the type of information contain in MSDS.
(5 marks)
“MSDS” stand for Material Safety Data Sheets. A document that contains information
on the potential hazards (health, fire, reactivity and environmental) and how to work safely
with the chemical product.
Lists the type of information contain in MSDS:
Section 1 — Chemical Product and Company Identification
Section 2 — Composition, Information on Ingredients
Section 3 — Hazards Identification
Section 4 — First Aid Measures
Section 5 — Fire Fighting Measures
Section 6 — Accidental Release Measures
Section 7 — Handling and Storage
Section 8 — Exposure Controls, Personal Protection
Section 9 — Physical and Chemical Properties
b) Explain the meaning of the Hazard Materials Classification label below.
(10 marks)
For the Blue section is represent for health. The range start from level 0
which is like ordinary material. For level 1 it is slightly hazardous. For the level 2 it is
hazardous and required breathing apparatus. For the level 3 it is extremely
dangerous and required to use full protective clothing. Finally, for level 4 which is to
dangerous to enter vapor or liquid
For the red section is represent for flammable. The range start from level 0
which is will not burn. For level 1 it must be preheated to burn. For the level 2 it
ignites when moderately heated. For level 3 it ignites at normal temperature. Finally,
level 4 extremely flammable.
For the yellow section represent the reactivity. The range start from level 0
which is normally stable. For level 1 it is unstable if heated and use normal
precaution. For level 2 it is violent chemical change possible and use hose stream
from distance. For level 3 it is strong shock or heat detonate and use monitor from
behind explosive resistant barrier. Finally, level 4 which is may detonate and vacate
area if material is exposed to fire.
c) What is the different between acute health effect and chronic health effect? Give
examples and type of exposures that cause these health effects.
(10 marks)
• ACUTE - direct threat that shows up almost immediately after exposure such as
burns from contact with a corrosive chemical and usually occur rapidly because of
short-term exposures and are of short duration. For example, for acute health effect
is nitrogen narcosis and the type exposure are by inhalation which thru breathing or
inhalation into the lung.
• CHRONIC - usually result from repeated exposure that occurs over months or years
and includes cancer and some allergic reactions and generally occur because of long-
term exposure and are of long duration. For example, for chronic health effect is
Impetigo and the type exposure is skin contact or absorption . This infection is
spread by contact with the sores of an infected person, and most often affects
infants and children.
