Mead Equipment Cleaning Tips

Cleaning and sanitizing equipment properly is essential for mead-making success. Failure to do so can allow bacteria to enter during primary fermentation, when yeast are most vulnerable and bacteria can easily impact and produce off-flavors in the mead. Many people overlook or skim sanitizing steps, but brewing sanitizers are important to use as directed so bacteria do not ruin the mead.

#4: Not cleaning and sanitizing your equipment well enough.

This feels like a small thing but it has a huge impact on the success of your mead. When you are
creating a mead you're ultimately creating a living area for a creature. If you don't clean and sanitize
your equipment properly you will likely allow bacteria to enter that living area. The most vulnerable
point for a mead to be impacted by bacteria is during the primary fermentation stage. This is when the
yeast are doing a bulk of their work and can be easily impacted by the bacteria. Bacteria will cause off
flavors within the mead and can ultimately completely ruin one if not taken care of.
When sanitizing your equipment make sure you are using proper solution. They make tons of
different brewing sanitizers and most all of them are great. Many people skim or skip of the step of
sanitizing because it's boring and they don't feel like it truly makes a big difference. Don't forget this
step, your yeast depend on your diligence!
