Tornado: Drought: Wildfire: La Nina: Avalanche: Flood

This document defines and describes different types of natural disasters: - Tornadoes are rapidly rotating columns of air in contact with the ground and storm clouds. - Droughts are periods of below average precipitation causing water shortages over months or years. - Wildfires are uncontrolled fires burning in areas of combustible vegetation. - La Niña is the counterpart to El Niño as part of the broader climate pattern in the Pacific Ocean. - Avalanches occur when a slab of snow fractures and slides down a steep slope when triggered. - Landslides refer to several forms of mass wasting including rockfalls and mudflows. - Floods are overflowing of water submerging usually dry land from

in the water supply, whether atmospheric, surface water or ground water. A drought can last for months

large volume of water, generally in an ocean or a large lake.

A wildfire or wildland fire is a fire in an area of

combustible vegetation that occurs in the
countryside or rural area.

A drought is a period of below-average precipitation in a given region,

resulting in prolonged shortages in the water supply, whether
atmospheric, surface water or ground water. A drought can last for
months or years, or may be declared after as few as 15 days.
La Niña is a coupled ocean-atmosphere phenomenon that is the
counterpart of El Niño as part of the broader El Niño–Southern
Oscillation climate pattern.

An avalanche is a cohesive slab of snow lying upon a weaker

layer of snow in the snowpack that fractures and slides down a
steep slope when triggered.

The landslide or, less frequently, landslip, refers to

several forms of mass wasting that include a wide range
of ground movements, such as rockfalls, deep-seated
slope failures, mudflows and debris flows.
A flood is an overflow of water that submerges land that is usually dry.
The European Union Floods Directive defines a flood as a covering by
water of land not normally covered by water. In the sense of "flowing
water", the word may also be applied to the inflow of the tide.

A tropical cyclone is a rapidly rotating storm system
characterized by a low-pressure center, a closed low-level
atmospheric circulation, strong winds, and a spiral arrangement
of thunderstorms that produce heavy rain.

An earthquake is the shaking of the surface of the Earth, resulting from

the sudden release of energy in the Earth's lithosphere that creates
seismic waves. Earthquakes can range in size from those that are so
weak that they cannot be felt to those violent enough to toss people
around and destroy whole cities.

A tornado is a rapidly rotating column of air that is in

contact with both the surface of the Earth and a
cumulonimbus cloud or, in rare cases, the base of a
cumulus cloud.
