Problem and Exercises
1. Discuss how business analytics can be used in sports, such as tennis,
cricket, football, and so on. Identify as many opportunities as you can for
each.
2. Classify each of the data elements in the Sales Transactions database as
categorical, ordinal, interval, or ratio data and explain why.
3. A survey handed out to individuals at a major shop- ping mall in a small
Florida city in July asked the following:
• gender
• age
• ethnicity
• length of residency
•overall satisfaction with city services (using a scale of 1–5, going from
poor to excellent)
• quality of schools (using a scale of 1–5, going from poor to excellent)
What types of data (categorical, ordinal, interval, or ratio) would each of
the survey items represent and why?
Answer:
1. Business analytics refers to the practice pertaining to methodical or iterative
exploration of data associated with the organization by focusing on statistical analysis.
The use of data and statistics has become prolific throughout most major sports,
analytics is the practice of applying mathematical and statistical principles to sports
and related peripheral activities. Analytics has many on-field applications in a sports
environment, including managing both individual and group performance. Coaches
can use data to optimize exercise programs for their players and develop nutrition
plans to maximize fitness. Analytics is also commonly used in developing tactics and
team strategies. With thousands of games worth of data to study, analysts can look for
patterns across a broad sample size regarding formation, counter strategies and other
key variables.
2. The categorical (nominal) data are the Customer ID, Region, Payment, Transaction
Code, Source and Product because categorical data is considered when it has
categorical variables and it is placed according to their characteristics. Categorical
data is like identifiers. There is no ordinal data in the presented sales transaction
database. The interval data in this sale transaction database is the Time of the Day
because the time of the day is equidistant and measurable. The Ratio data in this sale
transaction database is the Amount because ratio data has a defined zero point.
3. The categorical (nominal) data in the survey are Gender, Age, Ethnicity, because
like what I have answered in the question number two categorical data is like
identifiers and it is placed according to their characteristics. The ordinal data in the
survey are the overall satisfaction with the city services and quality of school because
they are asking to ranked the satisfaction and services. The interval data in the survey
is the length of residency because it is need to be measured.
