Statement of intent –
PRINT MAGAZINE -
For my magazine front/content pages I will use media language to create a brand identity of fashion
youth culture to appeal to the target audience of a culturally aware 16-25-year-old B and C1 class
demographic. This will reflect the industry context and is heavily inspired by Teen Vogue, a magazine
that is heavily related to fashion and teens which is published by Conde Nast. I need to make sure
that this magazine fulfils Teen vogue and relate to the heavily published product. To do this I will use
a bright, stand out colour palette on 1 of the magazines covers to convey a rebellious youth culture
fashion and on the other, use more of a basic, neutral colour pallet to represent the more chic youth
fashion. The main cover images will be central, featuring the same female however in 2 polar
opposite outfits to be able to relate to the specific audience that picks up the magazine. In terms of
representation one cover will be a female in her teens in a more rave style, defiant fashion (which
links to most recent trends of chunky boots, bright patterns and colour) the next will also be a
female in her teens but in a more chic, well put together outfit that shows a more high class side to
young adults to not only reflect the diversity / target audience from the brief but representations
which have been found in more recent editions of fashion magazines. Both of the models on both
front covers will gaze directly at the audience to reflect a confident, hopeful mode of address – this
is both aspirational and relatable to the target audience who would want (as a young teenager) to
see women represented as powerful and not in a passive or sarcastic matter. The mast head and
cover lines will relate to not only articles about fashion and beauty but also reinforcing social
messages and making sure that this magazine holds truth and is a ‘escape’ for teens who maybe
struggling with identity, home issues or just becoming an adult. They will also hold a wider
representation of issues that convey a youth cultural message – my intention here is to attract the
target audience indicted above with relevant and contemporary issues similarly to what the brand
Doc Martens stand for. This brand ties nicely within my magazine as not only do they preach about
youth in today’s society but also collaborate with different types of people and share their stories
such as Avie Acosta a 23-year-old gender fluid model. This brand has travelled within rebellious
fashion ever since the 50’s.
The contents pages will include typical features under sections such as fashion, beauty, health,
lifestyle. Including articles about careers and issues relevant to the audience of compassionate and
hopeful young adults. The layout and design of both magazines will reflect the front cover, using a
sans-serif, bold font and colour palette for the text and images.
When looking at convergence I will create this between the two products by choosing 2 social media
platforms. I would like to use Instagram to aim for the older 18-25 demographic and create a tik tok
account for the 16-18 year olds. Using tik tok will also help by creating video content which could be
used as cross promotion as I would then upload the video to Instagram in order to promote my tik
tok and have a wide range of different styles and not just images.

WEBSITE–
For the website element of my magazine, I must first make sure I follow the required media language
codes and appropriate conventions of website design. These obviously include the original title and logo
of my magazine and a menu bar (located at the top of the website) which will lead my young adult
audience to links they will find intriguing. For my website menu bar there will also be a feature for social
media accounts. I will be choosing Instagram which is perfect for showcasing new fashion styles and news
and great for interacting with your audience. Through the use of a social media presence it gives the
website interactivity and gives the readers of the website an opportunity to offer feedback, suggested
ideas and a place to follow. This is a common feature on many magazine websites and specifically what a
16-25-year-old audience would expect. My other main hope for this website is that it will give the young
adults an opportunity to be able to connect with breaking news of all things from fashion to politics. I aim
to have links and articles to do with up to date fashion trends such as oversized shirts and messy hair, to
music trends of grime and drum and bass to keep it relatable to your more ‘troubled teens’ and even
news such as knife crime and the young violence that happens. I must also remember that visual
elements on webpages are also designed to sustain the reader’s attention because images and slogans
are used to bring a sense of immediacy to the audience. My media product must have a highly
appropriate and consistent brand image. A branding that demonstrates and highlights that the magazine
and webpages are for the same intended audience. Some simple ways I will do this is, is through the
consistent use of the same models and the same logo on both print and website. one detailed example of
this branding is that I am planning to use a similar font and typeface in all of my products because to me
the typeface is iconic and how the audience will recognise and remember your magazine. I plan to use a
sans serif font my website to show the modernistic value and how the magazine is ‘up to date’ with
teens. Through the use of having my website and print newspaper similar and to complement each other
it helps create synergy and brand loyalty between both. When zooming in on convergence and what I
would do in order to create a more easily accessible website is making sure the website can be viewed on
different devices clearly and simple in order to make it easier for audiences to read and enjoyable to be
on. I would also make sure that there is links for social media platforms such as Instagram and Tik Tok
presented clearly so they can click and bring them to these accounts in order to create a more personal
relationship between them and the magazine and bigger following on all accounts. I will also add some
calls to action on both issues and the website for example getting readers to enter competitions for
giveaways to do with the current issue and signing up to weekly newsletters.
