Tutorial-3
Geometric design of highways-2
1. A valley curve is formed by descending grade of 1 in 30 meeting an ascending grade
of 1 in 30. Design the length of valley curve to fulfill both comfort condition and head
light sight distance requirements for a design speed of 80 kmph. Assume c = 0.6
m/sec.
2. A ruling gradient of a hill road is 1 in 20. What should be the compensation in
gradient and compensated gradient on a horizontal curve of radius 80 m after
allowing for curve resistance?
3. An ascending gradient of 1 in 50 meets a descending gradient of 1 in 80. Determine
the length of summit curve to provide (1) ISD, (2) OSD, for design speed of 80 kmph.
Assume all other data.
4. A parabolic vertical curve is being designed to join a road of grade + 5% with a road
of grade –3%. The length of the vertical curve is 400 m measured along the
horizontal. The vertical point of curvature (VPC) is located on the road of grade +5%.
The difference in height between VPC and vertical point of intersection (VPI) (in m,
round off to the nearest integer) is _________.
5. In que. 4, find the distance between VPI and Highest point of summit curve.
