Equality vs Equity

I really like this image as it clearly describes the difference between


equality and equity. As we know, each student learns differently. Why
wouldn’t we assess students in ways that show what they really know,
instead of a one fits all approach.
At the beginning of the year, I always talk about building our classroom
community and emphasize how everyone is different. We talk about how
some students have learned to read, while others are still learning; some
students are good at math, while others struggle with numbers; in journals,
some students like to write a lot, while others prefer to draw how they feel,
writing a small amount and so on. We also talk about what FAIR looks like.
I explain that because we all learn in different ways; some students may
get more help than others. I always emphasize that this isn’t because I like
one person more than the other, but because we all want to be able to
learn the tasks at hand. Many times, I group strong students with weaker
students and encourage them to help each other as much as possible. The
students refer to this as “filling their buckets” which is something we work
on throughout the day!
