Final Examinations May 22, 2012 Attempt Both Questions Time: 14:00-17:00 Questions Carry Equal Weights

The document describes the design of two steel-concrete composite structures: 1) A one-way simply supported composite floor slab with a profiled steel sheeting. The design is to be checked using the m-k method and partial interaction method for longitudinal shear. 2) A composite column braced against side sway, to be designed considering local buckling of steel, column capacity under axial and bending loads, and determining points on the interaction diagram. The design is to be checked for adequacy.

Steel-Concrete Composite Structures

Final Examinations May 22, 2012

Attempt both questions Time: 14:00-17:00
Questions carry equal weights

1. (a) What are the defects of the m-k method used for the design of longitudinal in
composite slabs?

(b) Check the design the composite slab shown in Figure 1 for construction and final
condition.Use both the m-k and partial interaction methods for checking longitudinal
shear.

The profiled sheeting is a CF 70/0.9 with overall depth equal to 70 mm. Other
properties of the profiled sheeting are:

fyp = 280 N/mm2; thickness tp = 0.86 mm; Ap =1185 mm2/m; Ip = 57104 mm4/m;
characteristic plastic moment of resistance Mpa = 4.92kNm/m; distance of centroid
above base e = 30 mm; distance of plastic neutral axis above base e p = 33mm;
characteristic resistance to vertical shear Vpa = 49.2 kN/m; m = 184 N/mm 2; k = 0.053
N/mm2; u,Rd = 0.23 N/mm2; weight of composite slab gk = 2.41 kN/m2

2. Figure 2 shows the system, loading and cross-section of a composite column that is
braced against side sway.Out-of- plane buckling is prevented. Check the design with
due consideration of the following points.

 Local buckling of the elements of the steel component

 Capacity of column under axial compression taking into account the danger of
buckling
 Design action effects and influence of shearon cross-section capacity
 Determine cross-section capacity under axial load plus uniaxial bending
(determine at least three points A, B, and C on the interaction diagram)
 Determine column capacity under axial load plus uniaxial bending
 Check whether the design is adequate
