What is Lighting?
The deliberate use of light to achieve a practical or aesthetic
effect.
Includes the use of both artificial light sources and Natural
lights.
Natural illumination by capturing daylight.
Purpose of Lighting…
Ensure the safety of people.
Ensure the safety of properties (Security Lighting).
Provide the facility to performs visual tasks.
Make a pleasant visual environment.
Diversifications of lighting…
Natural and Artificial Lighting.
Indoor and Outdoor Lighting.
natural Lighting…
Major source is the Sun.
Optimizing of day light is important.
Saves energy.
100% greener.
Use windows, skylights, or light shelves.
Artificial Lighting…
Generate light using electrical energy.
Use lamps.
Design according to purpose of area (Usage).
Indoor lighting…
Lighting systems inside the buildings, warehouses, factories
etc…
Outdoor lighting…
Lighting of outdoor areas such has roads, landscaping areas,
sports arenas, grounds, gardens etc…
Automobile lighting.
Lamp…
A replaceable component such as an incandescent light bulb,
which is designed to produce light from electricity.
Usually have a base of ceramic, metal, glass or plastic, which
makes an electrical connection in the socket of a light fixture.
May be made with a screw-thread base, two metal pins, two
metal caps or a bayonet cap.
Types of lamps…
Incandescent Lamp
Fluorescent Lamp
Compact Fluorescent (CFL)Lamp
Light Emitting Diode (LED) Lamp
Sodium Vapor Lamp
Metal Halide Lamp
Halogen Lamp
Laser diode lamp
Glare…
Occurs when part of an interior is much brighter than
general brightness in the interior.
Have two effects.
Can reduce the vision level (Disability glare).
Can discomfort the vision (Discomfort glare).
Standards for Lighting …
BS EN 12464-1:2011-Light and lighting, Lighting of work
places. Indoor work places.
BS 5266 :2011 - Emergency lighting.
BS 1376 :1974 - Specification for colours of light signals.
BS 5489-1 :2013 - Code of practice for the design of road
lighting.
BS 8206-2 :2008 - Lighting for buildings. Code of practice
for day lighting.
What is Efficacy…?
The efficient in lighting sources
Measure in lumens per Watt (lm/W)
Some Efficacy Levels of Luminaires...

(Cont)...
Intelligent Lighting..
Controlling the lights inside a building most efficient manner
using a automatic controlling system.
Most Building Management Systems (BMS) has provided the
facilities to do so.
Office working areas, Lobby areas, Toilet areas.
Mostly occupancy sensors are used.
Green Building Lighting…
Design to minimize the energy usage.
Give maximum energy efficacy.
Most of the time try to capitalized the day light.
Sometimes use BMS to control lighting of selected areas.
