Lesson 3 - Explain

This document provides a lesson plan for teaching students about chemical changes when making food. The lesson involves students making pikelets and ice cream in a bag in two stations. For the pikelets, students will help measure ingredients and mix them, learning that this is a chemical change. They will then watch the teacher cook the pikelets and learn cooking is also a chemical change. For ice cream, students will make their own in a ziploc bag by adding ingredients and shaking, seeing the ingredients change form. Formative assessment includes observation and checklists to see if students understand the chemical changes involved in both food preparations.

LESSON OBJECTIVES
As a result of this lesson, students will be able to: LESSON STEPS
 Verbally explain two chemical changes that occurred when making pikelets 1. Teacher will divide students into two even groups
2. Each group will be given 1-2 iPads to take photos of
what happens at each station
 Verbally explain the chemical change the occurred when making ice cream 3. Each group will make either pikelets or ice cream in a
bag first and then rotate after 15-20 minutes
4. Rotations iPads

ASSESSMENT (FORMATIVE)
For this lesson, the teacher will use a checklist and anecdotal notes to assess Pikelets (teacher directed)
students o Students at this station will work together with the Ingredients
teacher’s assistance to measure out the ingredients and Measuring cups
mix them all together Fry pan
o While students are mixing the ingredients together the Plates
teacher can explain the combining the ingredients is a
chemical change
o The teacher can ask students if they think it is a
reversible or irreversible change and why
o The students can then watch the teacher cook the pikelets
o The teacher can then explain that cooking the mixture is
also a chemical change using heat
o Once the pikelets are cooked the teacher will place them
in the fridge to be eaten at the end of the lesson
Ice cream in a bag (EA directed)
o At this station, each students will get to make their own
ice cream in a bag
o Students will need to write their names on their bags
before the begin
o The EA will assist students add ingredients to the bags
and then close their bags and place them in the bigger Pen
bag containing the ice Ziploc bags
o The students will shake the bags until the mix of Ingredients
ingredients will begin to become ice cream
o Once students have made their ice cream, the bags will
be placed in the freezer for students to eat at the end of
the lesson

CONCLUSION
o Students will take a seat outside and eat their ice cream
and pikelets
o The teacher will ask students questions
“what happened at each station?” “what were the
chemical changes that happened?” “were they reversible
or irreversible changes

LEARNER DIVERSITY
Enabling
Students who struggle and require extra support can just focus on
one activity or can participate in both and receive extra support
from educators
Extending
Students who require an extension can help other students or
brainstorm other things to cook that go through a chemical change

Ice cream in a bag
INGREDIENTS
 1 cup half and half (OR you can use 1/2 whole milk and 1/2 cream)
 1.5 tsp vanilla extract
 1 tbsp sugar
 ice
 1/4 cup salt
 Ziploc bags 1 Small, 1 Large
METHOD
1. Pour 1 cup of half and half into a small Ziploc bag.
2. Add 1.5 teaspoons of vanilla extract and 1 tablespoon of sugar.
3. Seal the bag firmly and get any excess air out.
4. In the larger Ziploc bag, fill it about 1/2 way with ice. Add 1/4 cup of salt.
5. Then add your small bag and fill with extra ice on top. Seal the large bag.
6. Get gloves for shaking and shake for 6 minutes. *Gloves are needed since the salt makes the ice extra cold.
7. Take the small bag out of the large bag and rinse the outside of the small bag with cold water. Make sure to rinse out the top part of the bag also (above the seal).
8. Once done rinsing, carefully open the small bag to not get any remaining salt from the outside of the bag inside the bag.
9. The ice cream will be a little icy looking to start. Use a spoon to mix it around and soften it up a bit. Scoop out and enjoy!
