Introduction to simulation software
• A Simulation is the imitation of the operation of a real-world process or system.
The act of simulating first requires a model which represents the key
characteristics, behaviors and functions of the selected physical system.
• A simulation is an animation of model that mimics the operation of an existing
or proposed system, like parts under defined load, frame under different stresses,
blades under pressurized fluid etc.

Basics of software
• A finite element program are available such as ABAQUS, ALGOR, NASTRAN,
ANSYS SAMCEF, SIMSCALE , OPENFOAM, COMSOL, AUTODESK CFD etc.
• Each program requires its own specific sequence of command and menu option to built
and solve a finite element model which are very similar among different program.
• They are widely used in universities, industries, research centre, engineering
consultancies etc.
• Advantages of simulation software:
• Simulation is less costly than real life experimentation(model test operation)
• Test different ideas under the same circumstances
• Determine the long-term impact of process changes
• Simulation provides process improvement
• Simulation guides thinking around different processes
• Improve stakeholder communication and build buy-in (manufacturers and
pharmaceutical suppliers)

Workbench environment FAQs
Q: sir everytime unit milunu parxa?
A: pardaina ek choti milae pugxa
Q: sir mero ta hajur ko jasto menu nai aena?
A: go to view > reset window layout
Q: sir ajhai side ko menu haru aena?
A: anys ramro sanga install vaeko xn, reinstall
Q: sir kun version install garnu parxa?
This is the ansys workbench
workspace.
A: version 15 mathi jun install gare pani
File menu allows to save hunxa
and open files. Q: Sir kam garda gardai crash bho, feri suru
Do not forget to set units
before starting your work.

Graphics and picking
• Many functions in the ANSYS program involve graphical picking-using the mouse
to identify model entities and coordinate locations.
• There are three types of graphical picking operations are:
• Locational picking, where you locate the coordinates of a new point
• Retrieval picking, where you identify existing entities for subsequent operations
• Query picking, where you identify points on the model for querying solution data
Drag and drop geometry/results can
by mouse be linked to another
analysis

The database and file type
When we specify the file name, say Frame, then it creates files will all have the file prefix, Frame
again with various extensions as below:
• frame.db
Database file (binary). This file stores the geometry, boundary conditions and any solutions.
• frame.dbb
Backup of the database file (binary).
• frame.err
Error file (text). Listing of all error and warning messages.
• frame.out
Output of all ANSYS operations (text). This is what normally scrolls in the output window during an
ANSYS session.
CD System Design & Simulation 5
The database and files cont.
• frame.log
Logfile or listing of ANSYS commands (text). Listing of all equivalent ANSYS command line commands
used during the current session etc.
• For saving the file
when we are always using the Graphical user interface (GUI), then we only require the .db extension file. This file
stores the geometry, boundary conditions and any solutions.
Once the ANSYS has started, and the jobname has been specified, you need only activate the resume command to
proceed from where you last left off
1. ANSYS Workbench project database file = .wbpj These are the major file types. There are other file
2. Mechanical APDL = .db types also.
3. Fluent = .cas, .dat, .msh
4. CFX = .cfx, .def, .res, .mdef and .mres
For the geometry to be imported ansys supports
5. DesignModeler = .agdb major cad geometry but it is recommended to
6. CFX-Mesh = .cmdb use .step or .igs file for better results.
7. Mechanical = .mechdb
