Area Tolerance & NFP Diam Factor

The document discusses area and number of flow path (NFP) tolerances used in determining sections in pipe simulations. The area tolerance value controls when a new diameter section starts based on the ratio of current to minimum/maximum previous areas. The NFP factor similarly controls when a new section starts based on the diameter difference compared to the old diameter times the factor. Higher tolerance values result in fewer sections while lower values result in more sections. The defaults in HYSYS are 0.6000 for area tolerance and 0.1500 for NFP diameter factor.

Area Tolerance

When the ratio between the current calculated area and either of the minimum or
maximum previous areas for the section exceeds this tolerance, a new diameter
section is started.

The higher the value the more sections you will have, the lower the value the fewer
sections you will have.

The HYSYS default value is 0.6000.

NFP Diam Factor

When a new number of flow paths will result in a diameter difference that is greater
then or equal to the diameter factor multiplied by the old diameter, a new NFP section
is started.

The higher the value the fewer sections you will have, the lower the value the more
sections you will have.

The HYSYS default value id 0.1500.

This value is not required for packed columns.
