1.3 ANDROID
Windows mobile is based on the Windows CE kernel and first appeared Pocket PC
2000 operating system. Throughout its life span the operating system will be available
in both touch screen and non touch screen formats. It was supplied with a suite of
applications developed with the Microsoft Windows API and was designed to have
featured and appearances almost similar to desktop versions of Windows. Third parties
could develop software for Windows Mobile with no restrictions imposed by
Microsoft. Software applications were eventually purchasable from Windows
Marketplace for mobile during the service’s brief life span.
2
The consumer’s role in selecting phone will be tougher if the technology is developed
in every sphere of the nation. Now days, communication is very important in the
modern field. Many communication tools like mobile, smart phones, windows phone
are available in the market. In order to know the customer satisfaction towards phones
the researcher has made an attempt to study about “A STUDY ON THE CUSTOMER
SATISFACTION TOWARDS ANDROID AND WINDOWS MOBILE PHONES IN
TUTICORIN TOWN” as a topic for this study.

Building on the contributions of the open – source Linux community with more
than 300 hardware, software and carrier partners, Android has rapidly become the
fastest growing mobile OS.
Everyday more than 1 million new Android devices are activated worldwide.
Android’s openness has made it a favourite for consumers and developers alike,
driving strong growth in app consumption. Android users download more than 1.5
billion apps and games from Google play each month.
Google Play is the premier marketplace for selling and distributing Android
apps. When you publish an app on Google play you reach a huge installed base of
Android.
As an open marketplace, Google play puts you in control of how you sell your
products. You can publish whenever you want, as often as you want and to the
customers you want. You can distribute broadly to all markets and devices or focus on
specific segments, devices or range of hardware applications.
7
Android version history
Since April 2009, Android version have been developed rapidly under a
confectionery-themed code name and released according to alphabetical order;
Cupcake (1.5), Donut (1.6), Eclair (2.0-2.1), Froyo (2.2-2.3), Gingerbread (2.3-2.3.7),
Honeycomb (3.0-3.2.6), Ice cream sandwich (4.0-4.0.4), Jelly Bean (4.1-4.3), Kitkat
(4.4), Lollipop(5.0-5.1.1). On third September 2013 Google announced that 1 billion
activated devices now use the Android OS worldwide. By the end of September 2015
Android version of Marshmellow (6.0) will be

The Android platform introduces many new and exciting features for users and
developers. This document provides a glimpse at some of the new features and
technologies in Android 2.3. For detailed information about the new developer APIs,
see the Android 2.3 version notes.
The download application gives the user easy access to any file downloaded
from the browser, email or another application. Download is built on a completely
new download manager facility in the system so that any other application can be
used more easily to manage and store their download.
Camera
The application now let the user access multiple cameras on the device including a
front-facing camera
Jelly Bean
Android 4.1 is optimized to deliver Android’s best performance and lowest touch
latency, in an effortless, intuitive UI.
Tooling can help us get the absolute performance out of our apps. Android 4.1 is
designed to work with a new tool called systrace, which collects data directly from the
Linux kernel to produce an overall picture of system activities. The data is represented
as a group of vertically stacked time series graphs to help isolate rendering
interruptions and other issues. The tool is available now in the Android SDK.
12
Google Play services
Because our app only contains the small client library, from that we can take
advantage of these services without a big increase in download size and storage
footprint. Also Google Play will deliver a regular updates to the services, without
developers needing to publish app updates to take advantage of them.
Jelly Bean
Android 4.2 introduces a new camera hardware interface and pipeline for
improved performance. On supported devices, apps can use a new HDR camera scene
mode to capture an image using high dynamic image ranging techniques.
Additionally, the framework now provides an API to let apps check whether the
camera shutter sound can be disabled. Apps can then let the user disable the sound or
choose an alternative sound in place of the standard shutter sound, which is
recommended.
Security Enhancements
13
Application verification - Users can choose to enable “Verify Apps” and
have applications screened by an application verifier, prior to installation.
App verification can alert the user if they try to install an app that might
be harmful; if an application is especially bad, it can block installation.
JELLY BEAN
Improved window buffer allocation results in a faster image buffer allocation for
your apps reducing the time taken to start rendering when we create a window.
Android 4.3 introduces platform support for Khronos Open GL ES 3.0, providing
games and other apps with highest performance 2D and D graphics capabilities on
14
supported devices. We can take advantage of Open GL ES 3.0 and related EGL
extensions using either framework APIs or native API bindings through the Android
Native Development Kit (NDK).
ANDROID KITKAT
Kitkat streamlines every major component to reduce memory use and introduces
new APIS and tools to help us create innovative response and memory efficient
applications.
For developers, Android 4.4 helps to deliver apps that are efficient and
responsive on all devices. A new API, Activity Manager is Low Ram Drive; let us
tune our app’s behaviour to match the device’s memory configuration. We can
modify or disable large-memory features as needed depending on the use-cases we
want to support on entry-level devices and can learn more about our apps for low-
memory devices here.
New tools also give us a powerful insight into our app’s memory use. The
podcasts tool details memory use over time, with run times and memory footprint for
foreground apps and background devices. An on-device view is also available as a
new developer option. The me info tool is enhanced to make it easier to spot
memory trends and issues, and it reveals additional memory overhead that hasn’t
previously been visible.
Printing Framework
Android apps can now print any type of content over Wi-Fi or cloud hosted
services such as Google Cloud Print. In print- enabled apps user can discover
available printers, change paper sizes, choose specific pages to print and print almost
any kind of document, image or file.
15
Most devices running Android 4.4 will include Google Cloud Print pre-installed
as a print service, as well as several Google apps that support printing, including
Chrome, gallery and Quick office.
A new storage access framework makes it simple for users to browse and
open documents, images and other files across all of their preferred document storage
providers. A standard easy- to- use UI make the users browse files and access resents
in a constant way across apps and providers.
Sensor Batching
Android 4.4 introduces platform support for hardware sensor batching a new
optimization that can dramatically reduce power consumed by ongoing sensor
activities.

incompatible with the earlier platform. With Windows Phone, Microsoft created a
new user interface, featuring a design language name “Modern”. It was first launched
in October 2010 with Windows Phone 7.
Windows phone 8, which was launched in October 2012. Windows Phone 8 will
be succeeded by Windows .1, which will be released in preview form to developers
on February 10, 2014.
DEVELOPMENT
Work on a major Mobile update may have begun as early in 2004 under the
codename “Photon”, but work moved slowly and the project was ultimately cancelled.
In 10088 Microsoft recognized the Windows Mobile group and started working on a
new mobile operating system. The product released in 2009 as a Windows Phone, but
several delays prompted Microsoft to develop Windows Mobile 6.5 as an interim
release.
Windows Phone 7
A minor update release in 2012 known as “Tango” along with other bug fixes,
lowered the hardware requirements to allow for devices with 00 MH CPUs and 256
MB of RAM to run Windows Phone. In January 2013, Windows Phone 7.8 was
released
Windows Phone 8
20
On October 29, 2012, Microsoft released Windows Phone 8, a new generation
of the operating system. Windows Phone 8 replaces its previously Windows CE-based
architecture with one based on the Windows NT kernel with many components shared
with Windows 8, allowing applications to be easily ported between the two platforms.
WINDOWS PHONE 10
21
The first Nokia Windows phones, the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 were
announced in October 2011 at Nokia World event 2011.
FEATURES
User Interface
Several features of Windows Phone are organized into “hubs”, which combine
local and online content via Windows Phone’s integration with popular social
networks such as Facebook, Windows Live and Twitter.
Windows Phone uses multi-touch technology. The default windows Phone user
interface has a dark theme that prolongs battery life on OLED screens as fully black
pixels do not emit light.
Messaging
Web Browser
Contacts are organized via the “people hub” and can be mutually entered into
contacts or imported from Facebook, Windows live contacts, Twitter, LinkedIn,
Google and Outlook.
If a contact has information stored on multiple networks, user can link the two
separate contact accounts, allowing the information to be viewed and accessed from a
22
single card. As of Windows Phone 7.5, contacts can also be stored into “Groups”.
Here information from each of the contacts is combined into a single page which can
be accessed directly from the Hub or pinned to start the screen.
Contacts and calendars may be synced from these services as well. Users can also
search through their email by searching in the subject, body, senders and receivers.
Multimedia
Media Support
Search
Microsoft’s hardware requirements stipulate that every Windows Phone must have
a dedicated Search button on the front of the device that performs different actions.
Pressing the search button while an application is open allows the users to search
within applications that take advantage of this feature.
Furthermore, Bing audio allows the user to match a song with its name and Bing
Vision allows the user to scan barcodes, QR codes and other type of tags.
23
Multitasking
Bluetooth
Windows Phone BTF support is available from Windows Phone 7.8, but it is
limited to the transferring of pictures, music videos via a “Bluetooth Share” app.
Store
The Windows Phone Store is used to digitally distribute music, video content,
podcasts and third party applications to Windows Phone handsets. The store is
accessible using the Zune Software client or the Windows Phone Store hub on devices
(Though videos are downloadable through the Store hub and must be downloaded and
synced through the Zune Software). The Store is managed by the Microsoft, which
includes an approval process.
24
Development
Third party applications and games for Windows Phone are based on XNA or A
WP7 specific version of Silver light.
According to Gartner, there were 1.6 million devices running Microsoft OS sold to
customers in Q1 2011 worldwide. 1.7 million Smartphone’s using a Microsoft mobile
OS were sold in Q2 2011, for a 1.6% market share.
After the release of Windows Phone 8, Gartner reported that Windows Phone’s
market share jumped to 3% in Q4 2012, a124% increase over the same time period
2011
Windows Phone 10
The company, which analyzes operating systems worldwide, says that Windows
10 has nabbed 5.2 percent of the desktop OS space. Windows 7 is still the
market leader at 57.7 percent share, followed by Windows XP and Windows
8.1, which nabbed 12.1 and 11.4 percent of the market, respectively.

FINDINGS AND SUGGESTIONS
Findings
81
Apart from the above findings this study clearly states that the majority of
80 percent of the respondents are satisfied with the performance of their
Android mobile phones.
SUGGESTIONS
The major factor which restricts the respondents to buy the mobile phone is their
finance. This study shows that the majority of the respondents earn between
Rs.5000to 10000 and they use mobile phones widely. Hence it is necessary that the
manufacturers should introduce mobile phone covering low income group people
whose earnings are below Rs.5000.
In addition to that this study states that the majority of respondents are Android
mobile users as they are feeling more convenient to access easily but the Windows
mobile provide more options which include the basic features of Android that does
not reach the majority of the respondents. Therefore it is important to create
awareness about the innovative features of Windows phone to all persons.
Further Study shows that the maximum number of respondents came to know
about their Android or Windows mobile phones only through their friends and
relatives. Additional efforts should be taken by the manufacturer’s side to promote the
awareness about their products through mass advertisement explaining its features and
applications in daily life.
It is understood from the study that the majority of the respondents using Android
mobiles due to the availability of free software’s in different kinds which is not
available in Windows mobile and the respondent is in a need to procure a particular
software for cost. So it is suggested that the manufacturer of Windows mobile phone
82
has to provide more free software’s such as in Android. Then there may be a
possibility that the respondents shift from Android to Windows mobile phone.
The study reveals the advantages of Windows mobile phone viz; it can be used just
like a personal computer which comprises office automation that does not reach the
respondents widely. Attracting sales promotional measures should be taken by the
manufacturer side.

CHAPTER V
CONCLUSION
Mobile phones today become an integral part of daily human life which made
the communication easier than any other means. In the earlier days mobile phones
were used only as a common communication device to contact one another. Later on
several additional features were included such as facility to send messages ( simple
messaging service SMS) call recorder, sound recorder, video camera, Music player,
Entertaining games etc; It made the people to expect more and more facilities in the
mobile from manufacturer’s side. Large numbers of new mobile phones with
advanced features are introduced in the market day by day. People are also not
hesitating to spend more on mobile phones. The recent advancements in mobile
phone technology is that Android and Windows mobile phone which are the
milestones in the era of development. Though Windows can be used in place of
personal computer with all basic features that found in the mobile it is not yet reached
to all people and most of the people prefer only Android mobile phones. The basic
reason behind that is they are not aware of Windows and its recent advancements in
inventions. Moreover some of the drawbacks are also found in Windows phone.
Unlike Android, one cannot procure free software’s in Windows. Appropriate steps
should be taken from the manufacturer side to satisfy the customers in this sense. But
windows phone has all the facilities of personal computer where we can install
application software’s such as Microsoft Office etc. Yet another important fact is that
inadequate advertising is also one of the reasons for the lag in attracting more
customers. So it is confident that by correcting all the flaws there is no doubt that
Windows mobile too will attract the customers than the Android mobile phones.
