CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION AND DESIGN OF THE STUDY

1.1 INTRODUCTION

The economic development of a country to a large extent depends on

technological development. Technological development is necessary in all fields.
There is a high development in the field of communication. In the beginning
telephones were used for communications. Invention of mobile phones in the later
days made the communication much easier than the other media. During the initial
stages mobile phones were used only for communication purpose in the same as the
land line telephones. Later on, some additional features were added to mobile phones
such as camera, music player etc; A new trend has been created by providing these
facilities in the mobile phones. These facilities offered groundwork for the arrival of
smart and windows phone. Smart phones are smart to handle and are different from
simple mobile phone. Through smart phones we can have the benefit of different
application software and lot of attractive games.

1.2 SMART PHONES

A smart phone is a cellular telephone with integrated computer and other
features not originally associated with ordinary mobile phones such as an operating
system, web browser and the ability to run software applications.
Early smart phones typically combined the features of mobile phone with
those of another popular consumer device such as Personal Digital Assistant (PDA),
media player, digital camera, Global positioning system (GPS) and a navigation unit.
A modern smart phone includes all the above said features and also in addition it has a
touch – screen computer, web browsing, Wi-Fi and third party applications and
accessories
The most popular smart phones today are powered by Google’s Android and
Apple’s i-OS mobile operating systems.
In simple smart phones provide a one- stop solution for information management,
mobile calls, e-mail sending, and internet access.

1
1.3 ANDROID

Android is a mobile operating system based on Linux kernel founded in

California in October 2003 by Andy Rubin and backed by Google along with major
hardware and software developers(such as Intel, HTC, ARM, Motorola and
Samsung). In October 2008, HTC released the HTC dream, the first phone to use
android. The software suite included on the phone consists of integration with
Google’s proprietary applications such as Maps, Calendar, Gmail and full HTML web
browser. Android supports the execution of native applications and third party apps
which are available via Google play store.

1.4 WINDOWS MOBILE PHONE

Windows mobile is based on the Windows CE kernel and first appeared Pocket PC
2000 operating system. Throughout its life span the operating system will be available
in both touch screen and non touch screen formats. It was supplied with a suite of
applications developed with the Microsoft Windows API and was designed to have
featured and appearances almost similar to desktop versions of Windows. Third parties
could develop software for Windows Mobile with no restrictions imposed by
Microsoft. Software applications were eventually purchasable from Windows
Marketplace for mobile during the service’s brief life span.

1.4.1 WINDOWS PHONE

In February 2010 Microsoft unveiled Windows phone 7 with a user interface by
Microsoft’s “Metro design language” to replace Windows Mobile. Windows phone 7
integrates with Microsoft services such as Microsoft Sky Drive, Office, box and Bing
as well as Microsoft services such as Facebook, Twitter and Google accounts. This
software platform runs mostly on smart phones, and has received some positive
perception from the technology press and has been praised for its uniqueness and
differentiation.

Google Play services

Google play services helps developers to integrate Google services such as

authentication and Google+ into their apps delivered through Google Play

A Google Play service is automatically provisioned to end user devices by

Google Play, so all you need is a thin client library in your apps.

Because our app only contains the small client library, from that we can take
advantage of these services without a big increase in download size and storage
footprint. Also Google Play will deliver a regular updates to the services, without
developers needing to publish app updates to take advantage of them.

Jelly Bean

Faster, Smoother, More Responsive than Android 4.1

Android 4.2 builds on the performance improvements already included in Jelly

Bean – Vsync timing, triple buffering, reduced touch latency and CPU input boost
and adds new optimizations that make Android even faster.

NEW WAYS TO ENGAGE USERS

Improved Camera with HDR

Android 4.2 introduces a new camera hardware interface and pipeline for
improved performance. On supported devices, apps can use a new HDR camera scene
mode to capture an image using high dynamic image ranging techniques.

Additionally, the framework now provides an API to let apps check whether the
camera shutter sound can be disabled. Apps can then let the user disable the sound or
choose an alternative sound in place of the standard shutter sound, which is
recommended.

Security Enhancements

Every Android release includes dozens of security enhancements to protect users.

Here are some of the enhancements in Android 4.2

13
 Application verification - Users can choose to enable “Verify Apps” and
have applications screened by an application verifier, prior to installation.
App verification can alert the user if they try to install an app that might
be harmful; if an application is especially bad, it can block installation.

 More control of premium SMS - Android will provide an notification if

an application attempts to send SMS to a short code that uses premium
services which might cause additional charges. The user can choose
whether to allow the application to send the message or block it.

JELLY BEAN

Faster, Smoother, More Responsive than previous two versions

Android 4.2 builds on the performance improvements already included in Jelly

Bean – Vsync timing, triple buffering, reduced touch latency and CPU input boost
and adds new optimizations that make Android even faster.

Improved window buffer allocation results in a faster image buffer allocation for
your apps reducing the time taken to start rendering when we create a window.

Android 4.3 introduces platform support for Khronos Open GL ES 3.0, providing
games and other apps with highest performance 2D and D graphics capabilities on

14
supported devices. We can take advantage of Open GL ES 3.0 and related EGL
extensions using either framework APIs or native API bindings through the Android
Native Development Kit (NDK).

ANDROID KITKAT

Making Android for everyone

Android 4.4 is designed to run fast smooth and responsively on a much

broader range of devices than ever before – including on millions of entry-level
devices around the world that have as little as 512 MB RAM.

Kitkat streamlines every major component to reduce memory use and introduces
new APIS and tools to help us create innovative response and memory efficient
applications.

For developers, Android 4.4 helps to deliver apps that are efficient and
responsive on all devices. A new API, Activity Manager is Low Ram Drive; let us
tune our app’s behaviour to match the device’s memory configuration. We can
modify or disable large-memory features as needed depending on the use-cases we
want to support on entry-level devices and can learn more about our apps for low-
memory devices here.

New tools also give us a powerful insight into our app’s memory use. The
podcasts tool details memory use over time, with run times and memory footprint for
foreground apps and background devices. An on-device view is also available as a
new developer option. The me info tool is enhanced to make it easier to spot
memory trends and issues, and it reveals additional memory overhead that hasn’t
previously been visible.

Printing Framework

Android apps can now print any type of content over Wi-Fi or cloud hosted
services such as Google Cloud Print. In print- enabled apps user can discover
available printers, change paper sizes, choose specific pages to print and print almost
any kind of document, image or file.

15
Most devices running Android 4.4 will include Google Cloud Print pre-installed
as a print service, as well as several Google apps that support printing, including
Chrome, gallery and Quick office.

Storage Access framework

A new storage access framework makes it simple for users to browse and
open documents, images and other files across all of their preferred document storage
providers. A standard easy- to- use UI make the users browse files and access resents
in a constant way across apps and providers.

Sensor Batching

Android 4.4 introduces platform support for hardware sensor batching a new
optimization that can dramatically reduce power consumed by ongoing sensor
activities.

WINDOWS

Windows phone is a series of proprietary smart phone operating systems

developed by Microsoft. It is the successor to Windows Mobile, although it is

19
incompatible with the earlier platform. With Windows Phone, Microsoft created a
new user interface, featuring a design language name “Modern”. It was first launched
in October 2010 with Windows Phone 7.

Windows phone 8, which was launched in October 2012. Windows Phone 8 will
be succeeded by Windows .1, which will be released in preview form to developers
on February 10, 2014.

DEVELOPMENT

Work on a major Mobile update may have begun as early in 2004 under the
codename “Photon”, but work moved slowly and the project was ultimately cancelled.
In 10088 Microsoft recognized the Windows Mobile group and started working on a
new mobile operating system. The product released in 2009 as a Windows Phone, but
several delays prompted Microsoft to develop Windows Mobile 6.5 as an interim
release.

LAUNCH AND EXPANSION

Windows Phone 7

Microsoft released an updated version of Windows phone 7, Mango, in May

2011. The update included a mobile version of Internet Explorer 9 that supports the
same web standards and graphical capability as the desktop version, multi-tasking of
third party apps, Twitter integration for the People hub and Windows Live Sky Drive
access.

A minor update release in 2012 known as “Tango” along with other bug fixes,
lowered the hardware requirements to allow for devices with 00 MH CPUs and 256
MB of RAM to run Windows Phone. In January 2013, Windows Phone 7.8 was
released

Windows Phone 8
20
On October 29, 2012, Microsoft released Windows Phone 8, a new generation
of the operating system. Windows Phone 8 replaces its previously Windows CE-based
architecture with one based on the Windows NT kernel with many components shared
with Windows 8, allowing applications to be easily ported between the two platforms.

WINDOWS PHONE 10

Windows 10 Mobile is the latest iteration of the Windows operating

system, now unified with the Windows Phone OS. It was released as an opt-in
Technical Preview 2 (build 9941) on February 12, 2015 to a subset of current Lumia
phones, including the Lumia 635, Lumia 730 and Lumia 830

Windows 10 Mobile is the first attempt by Microsoft to unify their desktop,

tablet and phone operating systems into a single OS. As such, Windows 10 on the
phone shares many of the same features as its desktop version, including the same
kernel, UI elements, menus, Settings, and even Cortana, It will also support
Continuum on some, newer smart phones, allowing a desktop-like experience by
plugging the phone into an external monitor.
Hardware Support

Windows Phone 8, while adding a number of software improvements also

brought support for updated hardware. This included support foe multi-core
processors and high resolution screens. Windows Phone 7 and 7.5 were often
criticized for a lack of high ene hardware support, but Windows phone 8’s new
hardware gave Windows Phone the ability to better complete with Google and Apple
Smartphones.

21
The first Nokia Windows phones, the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 were
announced in October 2011 at Nokia World event 2011.

FEATURES

User Interface

Windows phone features a user interface based on Microsoft’s Windows

Phone design system and was inspired by the user interface in the Zune HD. The
home screen called the “Start Screen” is made up of “Live Tiles” which have been the
inspiration for the Windows 8 live tiles.

Several features of Windows Phone are organized into “hubs”, which combine
local and online content via Windows Phone’s integration with popular social
networks such as Facebook, Windows Live and Twitter.

Windows Phone uses multi-touch technology. The default windows Phone user
interface has a dark theme that prolongs battery life on OLED screens as fully black
pixels do not emit light.

Messaging

Windows Phone utilize a system which allow conversations to be held among

users through multiple platforms (such as Windows Live Messenger, Facebook
messaging or SMS) within a single thread.

Web Browser

Internet Explorer on Windows Phone allowsthe user to maintain a list of

favourite web pages and tiles linking to web pages on start screen. The browser
supports up to 6 tabs.

Contacts are organized via the “people hub” and can be mutually entered into
contacts or imported from Facebook, Windows live contacts, Twitter, LinkedIn,
Google and Outlook.

If a contact has information stored on multiple networks, user can link the two
separate contact accounts, allowing the information to be viewed and accessed from a

22
single card. As of Windows Phone 7.5, contacts can also be stored into “Groups”.
Here information from each of the contacts is combined into a single page which can
be accessed directly from the Hub or pinned to start the screen.

Email

Windows Phone Supports Outlook.com, Exchange, Yahoo Mail and Gmail

natively and supports many other services via the POP and IMAP protocols.

Contacts and calendars may be synced from these services as well. Users can also
search through their email by searching in the subject, body, senders and receivers.

Multimedia

Xbox Music + Video is a built-in application hub providing entertainment and

synchronization capabilities between PC, Windows Phone and other Microsoft
products. Before Microsoft’s rebranding of its media products under the “Xbox”
label, the hub was simply called “Music + Videos”. This hub allows the user to
access music, videos and podcasts stored on the device and links directly to the “Xbox
Music Store” to buy music or rent with Xbox Music Pass subscription service.

Media Support

Windows Phone support WAV, Mp3, WMA, AMR, AAC/MP4/M4A/M4B and

3GP/ 3G2 standards. The video file formats supported on WP includes WMV, AVI,
MP4/M4V, 3GP/3G2 and MOV (Quick Time) standards. The image file formats that
are supported includes JPG/JPEG, PNG, GIF,, TIF and Bitmap (BMP).

Search

Microsoft’s hardware requirements stipulate that every Windows Phone must have
a dedicated Search button on the front of the device that performs different actions.
Pressing the search button while an application is open allows the users to search
within applications that take advantage of this feature.

Furthermore, Bing audio allows the user to match a song with its name and Bing
Vision allows the user to scan barcodes, QR codes and other type of tags.

23
Multitasking

Multitasking in Windows Phone is invoked through long pressing the “back”

arrow, which is present on all Windows Phone. Windows Phone 7 uses a card-based
task switcher, whereas Windows Phone 8 utilizes true background multitasking.

FINDINGS AND SUGGESTIONS

Findings

The findings during the course of study are observed as follows:

 The majority of 76.6 percent of the respondents belong to male population

 In the 76.6 percent of male respondents majority of 69.4 percent of them
are between the age group of 20 years to 40 years.
 The majority of 30 percent of the respondents using mobile phone are
business persons.
 The data collected during the study clearly shows that the majority of 43.4
percent of the respondents are earning between Rs.5000 to Rs.10000.
 It is clear that the majority of the 76.6 percent of the respondents are using
Android mobile phones.
 From the data collected it is clear that the majority of 46.7 percent of the
respondents gained knowledge about their mobile phone through their
friends and relatives.
 60 percent of the maximum number of respondents has an opinion that the
price of the Android mobile phone is reasonable.
 The majority of 65.3 percent of the respondents say that they are satisfied
with Android mobile phones only.
 From the data collected during the study least number of respondents are
Windows mobile users and among them majority 56.6 percent of the users
attracted towards Windows phone as it is User friendly.
 The majority of 65.3 percent of respondents has an opinion that they are
more convenient and user friendly with their Android mobile phones
compared to other phones.
 Maximum of 60.8 percent of respondents prefer Android mobile phones
due to the availability of free software’s in different kinds
 This study influences the fact that majority of 43.2 percent of the
respondents choose Windows mobile phones due to the inherent nature of
its touch sensitivity.

81
 Apart from the above findings this study clearly states that the majority of
80 percent of the respondents are satisfied with the performance of their
Android mobile phones.

SUGGESTIONS

Mobile technology is developing rapidly day-by-day and provides bundle of

facilities to all the segments of society. From the findings of the study it is noted that
the majority of the respondents make use of mobile phones belong to persons who are
business officials. They widely use mobile phones for their daily activities in
business. The information about the mobile phone and its features that are used in
both Android and Windows mobile phone is known to all sort of persons and not only
the business persons.

The major factor which restricts the respondents to buy the mobile phone is their
finance. This study shows that the majority of the respondents earn between
Rs.5000to 10000 and they use mobile phones widely. Hence it is necessary that the
manufacturers should introduce mobile phone covering low income group people
whose earnings are below Rs.5000.

In addition to that this study states that the majority of respondents are Android
mobile users as they are feeling more convenient to access easily but the Windows
mobile provide more options which include the basic features of Android that does
not reach the majority of the respondents. Therefore it is important to create
awareness about the innovative features of Windows phone to all persons.

Further Study shows that the maximum number of respondents came to know
about their Android or Windows mobile phones only through their friends and
relatives. Additional efforts should be taken by the manufacturer’s side to promote the
awareness about their products through mass advertisement explaining its features and
applications in daily life.

It is understood from the study that the majority of the respondents using Android
mobiles due to the availability of free software’s in different kinds which is not
available in Windows mobile and the respondent is in a need to procure a particular
software for cost. So it is suggested that the manufacturer of Windows mobile phone

82
has to provide more free software’s such as in Android. Then there may be a
possibility that the respondents shift from Android to Windows mobile phone.

The availability of touch sensitivity in Windows phone is high while comparing it

with Android which has low touch sensitivity. In this perspective the user of the
mobile phones must be educated regarding the high sensitivity touch in Windows
phone.

The study reveals the advantages of Windows mobile phone viz; it can be used just
like a personal computer which comprises office automation that does not reach the
respondents widely. Attracting sales promotional measures should be taken by the
manufacturer side.

83
CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION

Mobile phones today become an integral part of daily human life which made
the communication easier than any other means. In the earlier days mobile phones
were used only as a common communication device to contact one another. Later on
several additional features were included such as facility to send messages ( simple
messaging service SMS) call recorder, sound recorder, video camera, Music player,
Entertaining games etc; It made the people to expect more and more facilities in the
mobile from manufacturer’s side. Large numbers of new mobile phones with
advanced features are introduced in the market day by day. People are also not
hesitating to spend more on mobile phones. The recent advancements in mobile
phone technology is that Android and Windows mobile phone which are the
milestones in the era of development. Though Windows can be used in place of
personal computer with all basic features that found in the mobile it is not yet reached
to all people and most of the people prefer only Android mobile phones. The basic
reason behind that is they are not aware of Windows and its recent advancements in
inventions. Moreover some of the drawbacks are also found in Windows phone.
Unlike Android, one cannot procure free software’s in Windows. Appropriate steps
should be taken from the manufacturer side to satisfy the customers in this sense. But
windows phone has all the facilities of personal computer where we can install
application software’s such as Microsoft Office etc. Yet another important fact is that
inadequate advertising is also one of the reasons for the lag in attracting more
customers. So it is confident that by correcting all the flaws there is no doubt that
Windows mobile too will attract the customers than the Android mobile phones.
