Immediate Predecessor(s) Estimated Activity Duration (In Days)

1. The document provides information on activities, their predecessors, and durations for two projects. It asks to determine slack and identify critical paths. 2. It also provides solved math problems from an operations management textbook on topics like queuing, Poisson processes, and utilization. 3. One problem involves a photocopy repair system and calculates average wait time, utilization, repairman idle time, and probability of multiple customers.

(Assignment) 4) Repair calls are handled by one repairman at a photocopy shop.

Repair time, including travel time, is exponentially distributed, with a mean of two
hours per call. Requests for copier repairs come in at a mean rate of three per
eighthour day (assume Poisson). Determine:
1. The average number of customers awaiting repairs.
2. System utilization.
3. The amount of time during an eight-hour day that the repairman is not out on a call.
4. The probability of two or more customers in the system.
Step 1

The known data is given below:

Mean repair time is 2 hours per call

Mean arrival rate (λ) is 3 per eight hour day i.e. 0.375 call per hour

Mean repair rate (μ) is 0.5 calls per hour

Step 2

(a)

This is a case of single server, exponential service time i.e. M/M/1 model
(Refer book for cases)

Calculate the average number of customers awaiting repairs (Lq) using the
following formula as shown below:

Average number of customers awaiting repairs at any given time is 2.25

customers.

Step 3

(b)

Calculate the system utilization (?) using the following formula as shown
below:

The system utilization is 75%.

Step 4
(c)

Calculate the amount of time during an eight-hour day that serviceman not
on a call using the following formula as shown below:

Step 5

The amount of time during an eight-hour day that serviceman not on a

call is 2 hours.

Step 6

(d)

Calculate the probability of two or more customers in system (P >2) using the
following formula as shown below:

The probability of two or more customers in system is 0.5625.

(Assignment) 5) A vending machine dispenses hot chocolate or coffee. Service time is

30 seconds per cup and is constant. Customers arrive at a mean rate of 80 per hour,
and this rate is Poisson-distributed.
Determine:
a. The average number of customers waiting in line.
b. The average time customers spend in the system.

c. The average number in the system.

Answer :
Step 1
A vending machine dispenses hot chocolate or coffee. It does this in 30
seconds.

Therefore, the vending or service rate = 2 per minutes of 120 per hour.

Customer arrive at a mean rate, which is Poisson distributed, of 80 per hour.

Step 2

a.

The average number of customer waiting in line is:

Average number of customers waiting in line =

Since service time is constant:

Therefore, average number of customers waiting in line is

Step 3

b.

Average time customers spend in the system is:

Therefore, the average time the customers spend in the system is

Step 4

c.

The average number in the system is given by:

Therefore, the average number in the system is
