TEACHER’S SHEET
1. Pairing Up (To pair students in small groups first)
Each student gets a flashcard with a minimal pair word. Then they have to walk around the
classroom and find other students with the same word or sound. (5 min)
12 students: 3 groups
Sheet 1
/b/ bad /b/ ban /b/ buy /b/ born
/d/ dance /d/ dad /d/ done /d/ add
/k/ king /k/ can /k/ come /k/ kilo
Sheet 2 (back up)
/t/ talk /t/ ton /t/ take /t/ ten
/m/ month /m/ map /m/ moon /m/ men
/f/ fun /f/ fan /f/ fall /f/ feel
2. Read My Lips (Using the same groups as Game 1)
The students try to guess the word or sentence that the teacher or a student is “pronouncing”
silently. Then each team will need to go to the board and write down the given word that their
partner had pronounced. (10 min)
Suggested words (teachers are allowed to come up with their own words)
cat love friend map
singer seven she student
mom life dog tell
3. Chinese Whispers: is a game that involves passing a message from student to student,
hopefully without it getting changed too much. Ask students to carry the message farther away
where it can’t be overheard by others.
Suggested sentences:
1. I went on holiday 6 months ago.
2. My sister needs a sheet for her exercise.
3. Kitten in the kitchen.
4. My mom just bought a fresh fried fish.
5. Dogs dig holes for big bones
6. This little light of mine is going to shine.
*Alternative way: Teachers might let their students create their own story.
4. Minimal pairs bingo
Minimal pairs are pairs of words that sound almost the same, but with differ by only one letter
sound, for example, the short “i” and long “ee” in “ship” and “sheep”. Another example is the
words “rip” and “dip”. The teacher demonstrates the differences between the words. Students
then put each word in a random square of their bingo card. As a word is said, the other students
mark the square occupying that word. The game moves on like this until someone gets bingo.
• Note: As for this game, teacher can be flexible with words they might say and let students
write freely, but teacher should remember to categorize the sounds. For example:
/t/ (word) /t/ (word) /t/ (word) /t/ (word)
/d/ (word) /d/ (word) /d/ (word) /d/ (word)
/f/ (word) /f/ (word) /f/ (word) /f/ (word)
/m/ (word) /m/ (word) /m/ (word) /m/ (word)
• No preparation needed.
