Problem No 3

The document is solving a math problem to find the remainder when dividing a polynomial by a binomial. It defines the polynomial f(y) and finds the value of y that makes the binomial equal to 0. It then substitutes this value of y into the polynomial to calculate the remainder, which is 11. The answer is C.

Problem No.

Find the remainder if we divide 4y3 + 18y2 + 8y – 4 by (2y + 3).

A. 10 B. 15 C. 11 D. 13

Given:

Let: f(y) = 4y3 + 18y2 + 8y – 4

2y + 3

Required:

Remainder

Solution:

Find the value of y in 2y + 3

y = -3/2

Substitute the value of y to f(y)

f(-3/2) = 4y3 + 18y2 + 8y – 4
f(-3/2) = 4(-3/2)3 + 18(-3/2)2 + 8(-3/2) -4

Therefore,

Remainder = 11

ANSWER: C

Discussion:

Note that in the given question, we let f(y) = 4y3 + 18y2 + 8y – 4 so that it can easy to solve. If the
polynomial f(y) is divided by the binomial 2y + 3, the remainder obtained is f(-3/2). The answer is C. 11
