Mr Busy goes shopping (adjectives)
In this episode, focus is laid on the adjectives associated with buying clothes.
Paragraph 1
Mr Busy doesn’t like shopping at the best of times but when it comes to
clothes, he tends to put it off until the last minute. One could say that this is
one of the few things in life that he hates. He finds it totally boring so tends
to shop for clothes just once or, at the best, twice a year. He is not a particularly
fashionable man although he likes to be neat and tidy. His clothes have to be smart and
comfortable and easy to wash and iron. He does have a home-help, Mrs Brown, but she
doesn’t like ironing, so this job he has to do himself! Therefore, he has to pay careful
attention to the ironing and washing instructions when he makes his purchases. He usually
goes to the same place because he knows where everything is. By doing this it is bound to
speed up the frightful procedure, he thinks. So, when he arrives at the
department store, he is prepared to buy six or seven shirts, a dozen underpants,
ten pairs of black socks and a couple of pairs of trousers, all at once. The shop
assistants know him quite well and are always polite and happy to help. They even suggest
the styles and Mr Busy always agrees! As long as the clothes feel good, fit well and look
respectable he sees no reason not to buy them. He hates trying things on so once he
knows a certain style of shirt suits him, he buys several in different colours. This he sees
as a sort of short cut, as well.
Paragraph 2
When the time of year came round again to visit the shops, Mr Busy took a deep breath,
got into his little car and drove off to the shopping centre. He went early to avoid the
busy time of day when everyone in the world seemed to be there. He got a good parking
spot near the entrance and strolled into HIS shop. He was greeted by name and escorted
to the men’s department. He was handed over to Miss Suzy who had served him on many
occasions. She smiled sweetly and asked if she could show him some garments.
Mr Busy was only too pleased to have the shirts and trousers brought to him
already in HIS size. “That’s service for you”, he said. The shirts were made of
the finest cotton. The labels said that they were drip-dry and therefore, easy
to iron. The trousers she showed him were very comfortable but would need to
be shortened. Mr Busy is not very tall. The trousers would have to be dry-cleaned but
that was quite normal, Suzy said. “Go for a hot cup of tea in the cafe and we’ll do the
alterationsnow so you won’t have to pick them up another day”, Suzy offered. Of course,
Mr Busy didn’t want to come back so he readily agreed to the suggestion (apart from the
fact that he is also very fond of tea)! So, at the end of his trip, Mr Busy had
everything he needed for several months and readily paid at the cash desk with
his shiny credit card. He thanked HIS assistant and headed for the door.
“These should do the job”, he said to himself as he proudly carried two large
carrier bags out of the shop. “See you next year”!
