My Capstone
BIG QUESTION?
CHANGED

• My original BIG question was ”How can I

prepare myself so I can be the best ball
hockey player in Canada?” which I am still
focused on, it just got set back a little
because of an injury. I thought that I
would have been better by now but it is
still pretty bad. So instead of training, I
have to focus on fixing the injury and
healing it to become better so that I can
continue on training. Having a hip injury
affects my training and my performance
in games because running is a huge part
of ball hockey and one of my strong
assets was my speed

How can I adapt my training so I
can get mentally and physically
healthy to continue my original
goal?
(New big question)
• I have focused on many athletes
that I look up to to help motivate
myself and model myself after. I
look up to them and I studied all
their routines and mental training
so I could impose them on my own
training and practices
FOCUSES
CONNOR MCDAVID
LEADERSHIP
Background • Connor McDavid is a professional NHL player. He was the
Edmonton Oiler's first overall pick back in 2015. He was
born in Richmond Hill, Ontario on January 13th, 1997
• In his year prior to the draft McDavid recorded 120 pts
(44 goals, 76 assists) in only 47 games
• In his first year in the NHL, he recorded 48 pts (16
goals, 32 assists) in only 45 games due to injury
• He has one of the biggest NHL contracts in NHL history
with a 10-year deal worth $100,000,000
Leadership
• McDavid has demonstrated leadership throughout his whole hockey career, being the captain teams
such as Erie Otters (OHL), Edmonton Oilers (NHL), Team North America (WHC) and Team Canada
(WHC) and assistant captain for teams such as Toronto Marlboros U16 (AAA) and Junior Team
Canada U20 (WJC)
Obstacles
• As good as a player that he is, he faces a
lot of issues within his career. On top of
the pressure of being deemed "The Next
One" via Wayne Gretzky's "The Great
One", his team has not played well
which puts a ton of pressure on him
being the captain and the best player on
his team and even in the league.
Struggles

• Sportsnet believes that it is affecting

Connor mentally how much they are
losing. Hockey analyst, Nick Kypreos
states that "He is mentally strong
and very loyal to the franchise and is
looking for solutions just like the
Oilers management"
• McDavid is constantly looking for
ways to make everyone on his team
better and pushes himself to set an
example every game, as a captain
should.
EXAMPLE OF
LEADERSHIP

3Gsk
• I think that this is a prime example of leadership. If
you noticed, about 90% of those goals were
RECAP individual efforts. He finds ways to work around the
struggles on his team and is caused to work extra
hard on the ice to give his team an extra boost.
QUOTES
• “It is not how good you are, it is how good you want to be.”
• “Talent is never enough. The best players are the hardest workers.”
• I believe these quotes demonstrate leadership and show his drive to the game.
AWARDS

• 2 Ted Lindsay Award (Most Outstanding

player in the league)
• Hart Memorial (Most Valuable Player on
his team)
• 2 Art Ross’s (Most points in the league
at the end of a season)
• 4 All Star Team Selections (All of them
being the Captain)
KOBE BRYANT
MENTALITY
Kobe Bryant was born August
23,1978 in Philadelphia, California.
He was 1996's 13th overall pick and
went to the Charlotte Hornets but
instantly got traded to the Los
Angeles Lakers. Kobe was known
for being one of the greatest
players in NBA history and is always
being compared to Michael Jordan.
One of the things Kobe was known
for is his mentality (Mamba
Mentality). He was one of the
most driven, committed basketball
players in NBA history. I believe
that he is the most driven
passionate athlete in all sports

"I'll do whatever it takes to
win games, whether it's
Mindset sitting on a bench waving a
towel, handing a cup of
water to a teammate, or
Kobe's mindset was one of, if not his hitting the game-winning
most lethal asset to his game. Kobe shot." - Kobe Bryant
was described as obsessed with
becoming better. His advice is to
prioritize your goals, master your
craft, play with NO FEAR, don't settle
with winning, push to dominate and
don't stop until the job is done
EXAMPLE OF
MENTALITY

?v=g2afNT_7c9o
• At the point of the free throws, the Lakers were
down by 2. Kobe had played the whole game
before other than hyperextending his knee early in
WHAT the second half. He finished with 34 points draining
the last 2 free throws, tying the game up before he
HAPPENED exited to the locker room to get his injury treated.
He shot those last 2 shots with a played through
hyperextended knee and a torn achilles
Quotes

• "Mental toughness isn't about not getting

too high or too low but kinda staying even
keel. The trick is not to get emotionally
attached to the situation."
• "Once you know what failure feels like,
determination chases success."

• "I'm extremely willful to win, and I

respond to challenges. It's not a challenge
to me winning the scoring title, because I
know I can."

- Kobe Bryant

MICHAEL JORDAN
DRIVE/COMMUNICATION
Background

• Michael Jeffery Jordan was born

February 17th, 1963. He was the 1984
NBA Entry Draft’s 3rd overall pick and
went to the Chicago Bulls. Before getting
into the NBA, Michael set records such
as
• Most Points as a sophomore in North
Carolina history (721)
• North Carolina’s leader in points and
steals in 1982-83 and 1983-84
• Everyone has pre game rituals they do to get them
in a zone. Michael Jordan's differed from a lot of
athletes and it may surprise you. Rather than
listening to music or visualizing the game, Jordan's
Pre Game method was relaxing himself before every game
and didn't even think of it until game time. He
Focuses would joke around with his teammates, go around
and make conversation with his teammates and
make sure that their stress levels were low so they
would be confident in themselves and not have any
self doubts
MINDSET

• Michael's Mindset was winning,

determined and to always be the best.
He was known for having a huge amount
of confidence and being one of the best
trash talkers of all time. He once said to
5'3 Muggsy Bogues "Shoot it you f-ing
midget" or when he gave a live
commentary to Nick Anderson telling
him what he was going to do saying "I'm
coming down. I'm going to dribble
between my legs twice then I'm going to
pump fake and then I'm going to shoot a
jumper." And that he did. And drained it
COMMUNICATION
• Jordan was known as a "jerk" on the team but everyone
believes that is what helped them win all the
championships. His theory was "If you can't handle
pressure from me, you're not going to be able to handle
the pressure of the NBA Playoffs."
• Former teammate, Will Perdue said "Let's not get it
wrong, he was an a**hole. He was a jerk. He crossed the
line numerous times but as time goes on, and you think
back about what he was actually trying to accomplish,
you were like, Yeah he was a hell of a teammate."
QUOTES

• "My mentality was go out and win

at any cost.”
• “I can accept failure, everyone
fails at something. But I can’t
accept not trying.”
• “Talent wins games, but
teamwork and intelligence wins
championships.”
AWARDS • 6 NBA Championships
• 6 Finals MVP
• 10 Scoring Titles
• 5 MVP's
• 10 All NBA First Teams
• 9 All Defensive First Teams
• 14 NBA All Star Game Selections
• 3 All Star Game MVP's
• NBA Defensive Player of the Year
• Rookie of the Year
ABOUT ME
BACKGROUND
• I have been playing ball hockey since I was 5
years old (11 years). I have been on a few
teams such as my Western’s team which is top
in the association and then made Team BC
which I felt was a great accomplishment. I have
gone to Penticton, Victoria, Edmonton, and
Prague for the different teams that I have
played on.
ALEXANDER BURROWS

MY
FAVOURITE
PLAYER • My favourite player of all time has always
been Alexander Burrows who played on the
Canucks from 2005 – 2016 and the Ottawa
Senators from 2017– 2018 where he retired
that year. I always admired his drive and
commitment and how he would do anything
for the team no matter what. He was always in
the other team’s face and played harder than
any player on the ice. He is also the reason I
wear #14 in every sport I play.
MY DREAM

• My dream has always been to make Junior

Team Canada and earlier this year I was
selected to play in Slovakia for Canada. I was
supposed to go late June but the pandemic
shut that down. I was in my most driven phase
trying to be my best version of myself to
become the best in the country but then the
pandemic hit the world, borders and flights
closed and I couldn’t go. Fortunately, I am able,
to go next year with the same roster if
everything has died down by then.
HOW DID I APPLY
THESE TO MY
PERSONAL GOALS
AND ACTIVITIES
?
HOW I DEMONSTRATED
LEADERSHIP/MINDSET
MINDSET/LEADERSHIP

• I had my first regular season hockey game on

October 29th. I was no where close to 100% but I
pushed through it as much as I could. I focused
on doing the best I could and set up my
teammates as best I could. I ended the game
with 2 assists. Although I was down because I
wasn’t playing to my full potential, I was still
keeping it positive on the bench and feeding
advice to my teammates to put my team in the
best position possible.
• I think this can relate to Connor McDavid by
keeping it positive and trying to make his
teammates around him better
• I think this also relates to Michael Jordan
because of the drive and how I pushed myself.
My mindset was win so I did everything I could
to
HOW I
DEMONSTRATED
MENTALITY
MENTALITY
• I was extremely focused on modelling
myself after Kobe in this section because I
believe he was the best to ever do it. I had
another hockey game a week later and I
focused on pushing myself and fighting
through the injury but not too much to
damage it. Like Kobe said, I prioritized my
goal which was to do everything that I
could to win the game. I got a goal and we
won 4-3. I feel that my mental state was a
huge contribution to my performance and
I am going to keep focusing on mental
parts of my game as well as physical.
HOW I DEMONSTRATED
COMMUNICATION
• I feel that I demonstrated and practiced
communication on the bench and the floor by
COMMUNICATION talking with my teammates. If one of them made a
bad play I encouraged them and told them not to
worry or just get them next time.
REFLECTION
To answer my big question, I will adapt my training by focusing on healing my injury but while doing that,
improve other aspects of my game such as my mental health, diet, leadership, communication and my
mindset. I feel that by the time that I heal, I will overall be a better player because I have practiced all these
other skills which will contribute and play a big part in my original question (How can I prepare myself so I
can be the best ball hockey player in Canada?).
